I agree with what you are saying, I just would prefer cantu over uggla. If uggla is a true salary dump and they just want to get rid of him for next to nothing heck yea get the guy put him at 2nd base and find someone to take at least part of castillos contract. Id rather have uggla over castillo for the reasons you said but as far as the 3 marlins available i think cantu is the head and shoulders superior player of the 3.

Remember the 2008 All-Star Game?

Now, imagine what he would do in a clutch September game that REALLY mattered?

There's a reason that the last few years the Marlins flirt with contention and then flame out in September, and we should be familiar with it. Poor fundamental play from guys like Uggla, offensively and defensively.

No thanks.

Oh no, power! Ahh let's run away from it. I mean, Ugglas metrics in the field cannot be that good, as we all know defense at 2b can cost a team a half a dozen runs a game. And we also know that since he has talent and power, the words "gritty, hard nosed, and getting a uniform dirty" cannot possibly apply to him. Who cares whether or not he never gets cheated on a swing, and is a prime run producer at a position that offers few of them in a park that has large dimensions. I'm sorry, but this is a no shame offseason, in that we should not be looking at defense as a reason not to get a player. While they made boneheaded plays as a team this year, overall defensive ability had little to do with those. Also, I think we can all agree that defense wasn't the problem, nor was OBP or batting average. Plain and simple, the slappy hitters couldn't produce runs! This guy can and won't cost much... Duhhhhhh

It is what it is at least he wouldnt completely drain the farm like fielder or gonzalez would. You have to figure we'd keep either martinez or davis (id prefer davis bc of his power and bc hes more fine tuned having played college).

also Cantu will obviously cost more in prospects BUT not nearly as much as gonzalez or fielder. Also if the guy could in fact play 2nd base (which i doubt since uggla is awful and if he cant start there over him i doubt he can play there) but just for the heck of it that would allow us to keep murphy and his non-power bat at 1B while ridding us of castillo and making the lineup VERY deep probably reyes, beltran, wright, holliday, cantu, murphy, franceour, catcher. If wrights power is gone next year you could flip him to 2nd and beltran to 3rd. Fantasy's are fun.

No Uggla, no Ross, yay Cantu.

Although I hate the idea of giving the Marlins even MORE prospects...

I'll pass on Uggla. That guy is a terrible hitter, despite the power. We don't need to insert a .250 hitter into our lineup.

Cantu, sure lets do it. He's got some pop and like Hit the Weights says, he's just entering his prime.

Do it. Jorge Cantu.

No thanks on ross or uggla but I like Cantu. He is an RBI guy, even despite hitting 13 less HRs this year he still had 40 doubles and 100 RBI. Not sure he can play 2nd base anymore but he can definitely play 1B and he is just now entering his prime at 27 years old with 2 very good seasons the past 2 years.
