Buzz: Hawpe Might Be Odd Man Out in Colorado

by Michael Baron on October 10th, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Jim Armstrong of the Denver Post believes that outfielder Brad Hawpe could possibly be the odd man out in a crowded outfield for the Colorado Rockies.

Armstrong notes that in Game 2 of the NLDS between the Rockies and Phillies, three left handed hitters came off the bench as pinch hitters, and Hawpe was not one of them.

The 30 year old Hawpe is signed through the 2010 season and made $5.5 million while hitting .285 with 23 home runs and 85 RBI in 2009, and away from Coors field he hit .275 with 14 home runs and 39 RBI.

Hawpe did struggle in the second half, hitting just .240 with nine home runs and 27 RBI.

Hawpe is worth watching as i bet the Rockies will be heavily shopping him this winter…he is left handed and did not hit lefties particularly well at .243, so that would be a big concern…

Read: Matsui and the Mets

by Michael Baron on October 10th, 2009 at 8:32 am

David Lennon of Newsday wonders if free-agent-to-be Hideki Matsui could be a fit for the Mets.

According to Lennon, the 35 year old Matsui has told people that he is eager to play the field again and is even willing to play first base.

…the Mets have a void in the outfield and at first base which makes Matsui interesting…i worry about those knees that always flare up on him and he has had surgery on both, and the limited range he might have in the outfield at Citi Field…

Matsui is coming off of a four year, $52 million deal with the Yankees.

For more on Matsui, check out Lennon’s article.
