Buzz: Holliday and the Cardinals, Fielder Trade Unlikely, Lackey

by Michael Baron on October 11th, 2009 at 10:59 am

Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune says that the chances of the Cardinals re-signing outfielder Matt Holliday are remote, saying that the impending free agency of first baseman Albert Pujols in two years is a big factor in the Cardinals not being able to retain his services.

In addition, Rogers says that the Brewers are telling teams that they do not plan to trade first baseman Prince Fielder during the off-season, rather they are looking to deal infielder J.J. Hardy for pitching help.

Finally, Rogers believes that the likely bidders in the John Lackey sweepstakes will be the Red Sox, Yankees, Nationals, and Giants.

I’m Reading: Poor Man’s Eddie Kranepool, Matsui, Rooting for the Phillies, Shea in the ’60s

by Michael Baron on October 11th, 2009 at 9:44 am

Joe D from Metsmerized Online feels that Daniel Murphy is the “poor man’s Eddie Kranepool”.

Meanwhile, Sam Page over at Amazin’ Avenue feels that free-agent-to-be Hideki Matsui is out of line with the Mets stated priorities this off-season.

Ken Davidoff in Newsday doesn’t think either J.P. Ricciardi or Kevin Towers addresses the Mets Front-Office weaknesses.

Jason, from Faith and Fear in Flushing, would root hard for the Phillies if they met the Yankees in the World Series this year.

…interesting Jason, i posted this question on Twitter a few weeks ago asking this very question, to which most respondents chose the Yankees

Read: Abreu Prefers Angels

by Michael Baron on October 11th, 2009 at 9:04 am

Jill Painter from the Los Angeles Daily News is reporting that outfielder Bobby Abreu would prefer to stay with the Angels beyond this year.

Abreu signed a one year, $5 million contract this past off-season with the Angels, and finished the year hitting .293 with 15 home runs and 103 RBI and 94 walks.

Abreu was part of the Angels winning rally against the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALDS, walking in front of Torii Hunter‘s game winning three run home run.

Abreu told Painter:

“Of course I want to come back. I don’t want to go nowhere else. I want to stay with the Angels.”

In February, Matt had said that Abreu reached out to the Mets in an effort to sign with them and stay in New York, which you can read here.

…i was torn last winter on whether or not the Mets should bring Abreu in, primarily because his attitude and work ethic seem to walk hand in hand with team performance combined with his age…he did have a fantastic year this season, but so did the Angels

…i’m still not sure about Abreu…he puts up good numbers and he always gets on base, but given his age and the cavern in right field at Citi Field, i wouldn’t consider him to be the best fit right now…
