Buzz: Fielder, Peterson, and the Brewers
By Michael Baron - Oct 12, 2009 3:53 pm

Jon Heyman of SI.com says that the Brewers will attempt to sign first baseman Prince Fielder to a long term contract this winter, and would only trade him if those talks go sour.

…he is the prototypical first baseman that the Mets should be interested in, but Fielder will command a kings ransom in any potential deal, and i worry that the Mets don’t have the type of players that the Brewers would be interested in to get a deal together

Fielder finished the season hitting .299 with 46 home runs and 141 RBI, and played in all 162 games.

Meanwhile, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Brewers GM Doug Melvin has already met with former Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson about filling their pitching coach vacancy.

I don’t know about you guys, but I sure miss Rick Peterson. I am not to crazy about this new floor we got. Tuscan tile isn’t supposed to require this much maintenance.

    • Xavier22 says:

Peterson did a lot of odd things too – like refusing to allow his pitchers to develop a curveball. Warthen was doing well last season but he’s worn out his welcome. Why they didn’t go after Dave Duncan I’ll never know, especially as he appeared unhappy with the Cardinals.

    • JohantheMan says:

I too am not Warthen’s biggest fan and I would have loved to see Duncan here however I think that Warthen has a good relationship with Santana and that Pelfrey seemingly had turned a corner with Warthen after Peterson was fired last season. I realize he has now regressed but if it really is the Verducci Effect then we’ll see what kind of year he has next year. I am also curious (not curious enough to be excited or anything but just curious) to see if Ollie’s new delivery (with the pause) does anything for him now that his knee is fixed

Given that Willie is the Brewers’ bench coach, how amazing would it be if the Brewers start off badly, make willie the manager and have a re-united Willie and Rick? It still boggles my mind that Rick Peterson is gone.

  3. BBmetsfreak36 says:

Feilder is a great player. And puts great up great production. Not worth what you give up imo.

  4. Teacherhst says:

I think we miss Peterson because he is better than what we currently have. Like I posted previously, what about bringing in Duncan. He makes Peterson look like the ugly girl at the dance. (and I am all for getting LaRussa).

I do like Fielder but would feel more comfortable with Adrian Gonzalez because of his defense. And a bit thinner as well. Also, I saw where Godzilla hinted at the Mets…no thanks.

    • Xavier22 says:

Unfortunately, the Duncan/LaRussa ship has sailed – or more accurately, never even made it out of drydock. If either (or more likely, both) leave the Cards this offseason, the Mets have already cast their lot with the dynamic duo of Manuel-Warthen. By the time they get around to firing them, Tony and/or Dave will have been snapped up by some smarter team.

  5. thedude says:

I would take Peterson back in a heartbeat. He’s weird, so when things go wrong he’s an easy target, but I think he gets through the guys.

And since it was that maniac Bernazard who pushed him out, that shouldn’t be a black mark against him.

    ABW baby. Anybody but Warthen.

  6. djshakes2 says:

It’s easier to see why the Jacket was mocked and made a scapegoat by the people running the organization in light of the events of the past couple of seasons.

Clearly, anybody with any sort of plan and guiding philosophy would not feel comfortable with the Mets and would ruffle some feathers.

  7. jromer01 says:

I love prince but he is not the answer. I would MUCH rather uses my chips to land Doc than use them to land Prince. Our rotation is a mess… we can fix our lineup issues via free agency obviousally matt holliday. JOHN LACKEY IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!!!!!!! please Minaya do NOT sign him. Signing Lackey to a 5 year 60 plus deal would blow up in the Mets face. TRADE FOR DOC AND SIGN MATT HOLLIDAY…. and dont forget about the PEN!

    • mdfalcha says:

I agree. Trade for Halladay, sign Holliday, trade beltran to the yankees for phil hughes, jesus montero (top Catcher prospect), and austin jackson.

      • Xavier22 says:

Then who plays CF, Angel Pagan?

      • mdfalcha says:

Sign Delgado for one more year. I feel this is a solid move with the addition of Chris Carter and the presence of Ike Davis rising through the minors. One more year will give Davis time to grow and Delgado at first is cheaper than any other free agent out there and will provide more pop than murphy guaranteed – DO NOT part with Ike Davis in the Halladay trade (trade for Halladay: Niese, Martinez, Parnell, Mejia, and Familia)

        LINEUP
        1. SS Jose Reyes
        2. CF Angel Pagan
        3. 3B David Wright
        4. LF Matt Holliday
        5. 1B Carlos Delgado (C. Carter/Ike Davis backup)
        6. RF Jeff Francouer
        7. C J. Thole/ J. Montero
        8. 2B Luis Castillo (Alex Cora backup)
        9. Pitcher

        2B/SS A. Cora
        2B/SS A. Hernandez
        C J. Thole/ J. Montero

        Rotation
        1. Johan Santana
        2. Roy Halladay
        3. Mike Pelfrey
        4. Olliver Perez
        5. John Maine

        RP Sean Green
        RP Brian Stokes
        RP T. Redding/ N. Figueroa (long-man or spot starters)

        • mdfalcha says:

Beltran and Holliday’s salaries would basically be a swap, Halladay would add $20MM, Delgado would probably get 6-7MM with incentives. So in this scenario, would the total team salary actually go down?

          • JohantheMan says:

I doubt that the yankees would go for that trade, huges is very valuable to them and i just don’t see it, you’d have to trade for another CF unless you want to depend on pagan

and no to delgado it’s time to move on

  8. JohantheMan says:

    Let’s go Rockies

  9. mdfalcha says:

I disagree with the notion that warthen is entrenched in the pitching coach slot. I feel the Mets are at least wise enough to reach out to Duncan to see what he is looking for. I don’t think they will go that way unless Duncan is willing to take a discount.

  10. mdfalcha says:

    C – Josh Thole – $400K

    TOTAL BULLPEN = $15.33MM

    J.J. Putz – $1MM buyout

    TOTAL TEAM = $131.18MM

    Did I miss anything?

    • JohantheMan says:

Also I don’t see how you can depend on Thole to be the starting catcher, I like him a lot and it looks like he can be a solid players but I don’t know if he can be relyed on for an entire year at the starting position

Your rotation is fine but I think the bench is a little weak – If you depend on Angel Pagan for CF you have to have somebody that can step in, Angel has a history of being hurt, he did make it mostly through this year and he suffered the groin injury i believe it was and was on the 15 day DL. That leaves your bench short unless you call up somebody.

Also how can you depend on Delgado? He hasn’t even proven he can play after his hip surgery and he is a robust 38. He also can have a bad attitude at times, in my mind it wasn’t too great to leave your team just because you weren’t able to play the rest of the year. If he plays next year I think it will be on an AL team where he can DH.

  11. JohantheMan says:

JEEEEEz the phils are going to the CS, can the dodgers take them downnnn?
