Buzz: Rays Need to be “Overwhelmed” to Move Upton

In a report in today’s St. Petersburg Times, Marc Topkin says that the Tampa Bay Rays would need to be overwhelmed with an offer to move outfielder B.J. Upton.

Topkin says that with Upton’s value so low at the moment, the Rays cannot afford to move Upton at this time.

…i would love for the Mets to inquire about Upton’s availability…he has a world of talent…i’m not sure if he would be happy as a corner outfielder and i am not sure what the Mets have that could “overwhelm” the Rays anyway

Upton hit .241 with 11 home runs and 55 RBI in 144 games after coming back from a shoulder injury in April.

I dont know what’s all the hype about upton. the guy had a fluke year, the league figured him out and he cant adjust. I mean murphy had a better year than him. we need proven guys, no guys with potential to be great..

buying low is a good idea but as the rays said they would be selling very l ow and who knows if they’ll want to do that (it seems the don’t) and yes i agree we need proven players, solid players, to lengthen the lineup and score runs

Agree with Dominican… why trade for upton to be our lf when if your looking for a young kid with potential, why not just go with F Mart? Trading for Upton makes no sense at all… trading for Carl Crawford is different though.

What is interesting, of course, is that the Mets have a few ‘almost untouchables’ whose value is pretty low right now too…

I don’t think this opinion from the Times is really relevant, honestly.

The assumption is that they won’t trade him unless they get a ton back for him because his value is low.

I don’t think this is correct. Upton’s value hasn’t been high in two years, almost. He was hurt last year and did have a great playoff last year, and he’s showing that he is inconsistent in hitting style other than being a flyball hitter.

I think the Rays would rather get SOME value for him rather then having to pay Upton arbitration and eventually just let him go.
