According to Patrick Newman at NPB Tracker (via Nikkan Sports), 18-year-old Japanese lefty Yusei Kikuchi will meet with the Mets, as well as six other MLB teams, later this month.

Thanks to MLB Trade Rumors for the link, and for more on Kikuchi, check out Newman’s breakdown here.

85 MPH fastball = pass

Um his fastball is low to mid 90’s. Don’t know where you got that number from.

Coolpapabell October 14, 2009 at 11:44 am

You must of gotten it from Newman’s analysis, which gives a wide range of 87-96. Last I saw he was in the 90’s and was touching 95 when he needed it.

I got it from a video of him pitching. Maybe he was 15 at the time. I couldn’t tell the video was in Japanese.

It would really bolster our system if we could bring him in, and pair him up with Matz. I have a feeling that the Mets are going to outbid everyone else. They have been just as coy with him as they had been with Dicke.

Is this the same deal they had to do with Dice K? Put in a bid just to be able to negotiate with him and then the winner has first shot at contract?

No X-man, its not like Dice-K. Its a straight sign. They don’t need to bid to buy his rights from a Japanese club.

Don’t forget that the Mets landed Juan Urbina in the IFA market this summer. Urbina is former major leaguer Ugueth Urbina’s son. 16 year old lefty throws 90-92 with a good feel for his secondary pitches and smooth delivery. Urbina was arguably the best lefty available in the IFA market this summer.

Matz, Urbina, Dotson (another high school lefty signed this summer), give the Mets a nice influx of lefty pitching.

Adding Kikuchi would be a nice coup.

Oh man, I fogot about Urbina. We would definitely be stocking up! It would be crazy if we go pitcher in the draft as well, but they should go BPA.

it’s worth a try. If he does have the talent, might as well use some of the money they save not paying draft picks!

Keep stocking the system . . .
