Read: Trading Carlos Beltran

Marty Noble, in his mailbag for Mets.com, answered questions from fans about the makeup of the Mets and their various offseason plans, and one of the questions he answers is the viability of trading Carlos Beltran.

Noble says “…how many clubs are looking to assume a $37 million obligation for two years? Moreover, who plays center field for the Mets? Beyond that, are other clubs sure about his physical condition?”

…i would be more concerned to find out that the Mets are even entertaining trading Beltran…he definitely missed a lot of time this year due to that knee injury and the team seemed to have suffered the most when he went down, but i am not too worried about him next year, provided he gets the proper attention and rest that he needs…

Beltran is as good of a center fielder as there is, and if his knee is healthy, there aren’t too many center fielders that i would have faith in patrolling that position at Citi Field…and like Noble says in his answer to the question, who would they get to replace him anyway…it’s not in the Mets best interest to create such a hole when there are so many other glaring problems to address…

For Noble’s answers to other questions, check out Mets.com.

no way I trade beltran, when he got hurt, the mets batting order became a mess. DONT TRADE THE CORE!!!..BUILD AROUND THEM!!

I agree. There is no way the Mets should be considering trading Beltran (unless they get “blown away” by an offer). It isn’t only that he has done right by us…how do you replace him?
You can’t upgrade defensively. And you can’t upgrade (at the position) offensively. Anything you get in trading Beltran will mean that you have just *signigificantly* weakened your team at CF.
The only way to do this would be if you are getting a good replacement in CF and some upgrades at at least 2 other positions (like pitcher and LF).

Beltran is going to be 33 and 34 over the next two years, and really seems to be peaking offensively at this point in his career. It would be foolish to trade him at this stage, especially since he’ll be playing for his next contract in 2011. Retaining Beltran is a no-brainer.

absolutely, and the prospect of letting an aging Type A free agent leave for compensation instead of bringing them in for a change will be a appealing situation when his deal comes to an end.

If its about money then I would rather have Beltran and Pagan over Holliday and Pagan. Overlapping the two all star OF’s for two years is a very nice transition, instead of replacing needs a year after they come up.

If its about talent then I don’t see how they can get fair value in return. If the team somehow stinks it up again next year I could see thinking about moving him at the trade deadline, but its still probably not a good idea.

Even if the Mets wanted to trade Carlos Beltran they wouldn’t get much in return for a guy with bad knee’s owed $37 million over the next two season’s. I wouldn’t trade him anyway but even if the Mets did want to trade him I don’t think they could and expect to be a better team in 2010 and 2011.

The only way you can entertain trading him is if his knee is something the Doctor’s know will blow up on him next year and cost him the year or something. Even then, it’s trading in bad faith.

Best bet is to keep him and cross your fingers.

I don’t think anyone wants to trade Carlos and we probably can’t get back in value what he is worth to us at this point because of contract/age/injury…

But there’s no reason to not at least leave the door open. If someone gives us a chance to improve the team as a whole in any deal for any player on our roster, we need to at least listen.

The Mets are in no position to trade Beltran. He is a premiere cf and imo the best in the game. Ill admit that I am not a HUGE Beltran fan but to even think about trading him with the state the Mets are in is foolish imo.

Isn’t there also a no-trade clause in his contract? No on e is going to pay his salary AND buy his waiver

If Beltran is as damaged & untradeable as many bloggers suggest, we better have a viable option for when he goes down in 2010. I think that his comeback in 2009 would ease the fear of many GM who might want his bat in the line up.

I think the arguement that buying his no-trade clause would be costly is probably the most valid reason we will not trade him.

Apparently you can’t write id-iot
so i’ll try this again marty noble is an id-iot, he always writes everything so condescending

why consider trading Beltran, it’s a silly idea plus he has a no trade clause, so why are we even discussing this

realmet October 14, 2009 at 11:05 am

DO NOT TRADE BELTRAN. He’s my favorite Met and by far our best all around player and he’s a class act that kids can look up to. Can’t say that about too many players these days.

Agee's Catch October 14, 2009 at 11:16 am

He loses graciously?

Agee's Catch October 14, 2009 at 11:19 am

Are there any Mets who actually increased there trade value in 2009?

Xavier22 October 14, 2009 at 11:42 am

Angel Pagan and Daniel Murphy?

Agee's Catch October 14, 2009 at 11:49 am

Can we get anything for them?

mpetr37349 October 14, 2009 at 5:57 pm

Pagan and Murphy have trade value right now and could (should) be included in a trade for pitching.

If you want a good laugh you can go over to mlbtraderumors.com and read the comments on the post they have about Marty’s mailbag. The trade suggestions involving the Mets and Braves are pretty funny. Lowe for Beltran straight up was one of them.

Agee's Catch October 14, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Lowe dfor Beltran? Not bad, not bad…
