Quick Q&A: Joel Pineiro, the Mets and Money
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 16, 2009 3:47 pm

Sam, a reader of MetsBlog, sent in an e-mail that said:

“I’m surprised I haven’t heard anything about Joel Pineiro.  He is a free agent this off season and always kills the Mets.  I think he would be a nice pick up.  He’s ground ball pitcher, and had a 3.49 ERA this season.  What do you think?”

The 31–year-old Pineiro was 15–12 with a 3.49 ERA in 32 starts this season, including 214 innings, during which he walked just 27 batters and struck out 105.

John Lackey will be seeking a five-year deal, and so the early buzz in baseball suggests Pineiro is likely to land a two-year deal, worth around $20 million, which is what pitchers like Jon Garland, Rich Harden and Randy Wolf are likely to get as well.

I have always been intrigued by Pineiro, because he has very good control, a wicked curve ball and good command.  The thing is, he’s had a very sporadic career… he’s been healthy, then injured, good, then bad, he gets hit hard, then he cruises, he’s a reliever, then he’s starter, and who knows what he’ll be next season.

Sure, I’d sign up for having 2009’s Joel Pineiro on the Mets, but his 2009 season also occurred under the guidance of Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, who seems like King Midas when it comes to turning pitchers around.

The days of Johan Santana, some random, washed-up, veteran fifth starter, and three guys named Hope, Maybe and Potential, has to be a thing of the past.  The Mets need at least one other reliable pitcher besides Santana.

    Well put Matt.

Lackey and harden would be a nice haul. I’m not a huge randy wolf fan, but he did have a very good season. Pinerio scares me to death. He was amazing this year…. But he was also with Duncan who has worked wonders with many other pitchers who left and stunk (Suppan, Jeff Weaver, Looper, Kip Wells, Lohse, Wellenmeyer) All had good records and success then left via FA and were no good.

The Mets need someone better than Piniero. They need a solid number 2 or an Al Leiter type ace.

I rather the Mets give up the farm for a guy like Haren rather than Roy H….

Lackey would be ideal because hes a free agent.

I would also take a look at Harang. Probably could get him for a few b level rospects because of his salary. He is an innings eater. I think he would be a solid #3 or 4 starter.

I’ve now seen his name on here a bunch of times. When did Haren’s name ever get mentioned as being available?

  4. swingers31 says:

I have heard he might be…I would at least inquire….wouldnt hurt to at least ask…rather give the farm for him rather than Doc

  5. racemccloud says:

    Dan Haren’s not available.
    Rich Harden’s a FA.
I think Aaron Harang’s still under contract, too.

    • Agees Catch says:

Harang is due 12.5 million in 2011. He has a 12.75 million club option in 2012 with a 2 million buy out. No thanks

If the Reds wanted to do a change of scenery trade for Perez, I’d be open to it.

Garland is intriguing. He’s made 32+ starts 8 years in a row. he’s easily a #3, and better than the pen killers. Lackey and Garland would definitely make us better.

yes, i was begging for garland last year hes very underrated people say he doesnt K enough hitters and the stat rats seem to dislike him, but if you get lackey in here and garland the 1-3 would be very good and most importantly CONSISTENT. Then pelf in the 4 would have alot less pressure on him, and then you can let perez maine nieve niese compete for the 5 spot and we may finally have depth at SP which we have never had under omar.

Anybody else disgusted watching Pedro dominate the Dodgers. 7IP 2 H 0BB 3Ks 0ERs uggggghh

makes you wonder about our pitching coaches when pedro is looking great and throwing like 200 pitches per start and chan ho park is suddenly throwing 96 and getting out of huge jams like in game 1.

I absolutely love, LOVE, the hypocrites in NY sports media. Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post Tweeted during Dodgers/Phils that Pedro was making Omar Minaya look bad with ever pitch.

Well, here’s what Bart Hubbuch had to say about Omar bringing back Pedro back in January of 2009:

everyone thought pedro was done from the wilpons down to omar to the hot dog vendors to me you and everyone else on here. pedro is just showing why he is the hall of famer he is and while we were wrong about him you cant really blame anyone he looked awful in 07 and 08.
