Note: Mike Scioscia’s Angels have been Sloppy
By Matthew Cerrone - Oct 20, 2009 2:50 pm

Marty Noble is back with another mailbag Q&A for MLB.com, during which he answers questions about Omar Minaya’s mistakes from 2009, Pedro Feliciano’s value, and trading David Wright, Jose Reyes or Carlos Beltran.

Noble is asked to comment on Joe Girardi’s decisions in the ALCS, and to respond to whether he is a Yankees fan.

…speaking of managers, i lose count every season of the number of e-mails i get from Mets fans praising Angels manager Mike Scioscia, or e-mails suggesting the Mets need a manager like scioscia, because his team is always so disciplined and plays with such passion…

…i agree with the general idea… but, it should be noted that mid-way through yesterday’s Game 3 of the ALCS, the Angels were essentially gift-wrapping their series for the Yankees with some of the sloppiest defensive play ever seen in a post season series… i mean, it looked like a 2009 Mets highlight reel, complete with a dropped pop up… additionally, i listened to ESPN Radio tell me it appeared the Angels were playing with no life, and were showing no heart… yes, no heart, sloppy play, all under scioscia’s watch… the point is, no manager is perfect… in the end, the player needs to use two hands on the pop up, throw the ball in the strike zone, and shorten his swing…

…that said, i think it is a credit to scioscia’s values and style that his team avoids this sort of play through most of the regular season, and it will be interesting to see how a win in Game 3 might correct the recent sloppiness… i am willing to bet the team returns to form, unlike the Mets, who just couldn’t shake their bad habits through much of the summer

…by the way, despite his success in Los Angeles, i hear scioscia, and i still get annoyed, thinking of the 1988 playoffs against the Mets…

…also, David Cone should have won that Cy Young… yes, i’m still bitter…

we are all bitter about something

and i hate marty noble, i didn’t even read his thing but i’m sure its condescending and a little bit rude

      Actually,

The only thing in the whole artice i disagreed with was how “Bleak” 2010 looks for the mets. How the Marlins and Braves have past them because they ended with better records in 2009.

He rightly makes fun of an email about how nice it would have been to have pedro after his 7 shut out innings, saying chances are he wouldn’t have made 25 starts, and with no offense and terrible defense behind him IF he made 20 starts he probably would have been 6-10 in 20 starts.

He also says that Trading Reyes right now would be dumb, and that trading Wright isn’t an option. beltran has a no-trade clause so moving him would be hard.

He says Girardi over-managed and made a mistake replacing Robertson… and i agree… he says that Feliciano doesn’t play enough to be considered an MVP of anything and I agree.

      That’s his whole article.

thanks for the quick summary, it doesn’t seem so bad but i really can’t take reading his stuff it is always saying something negative and he always makes fun of the fans that write to him, i just feel like he doesn’t like the mets too much and that aggravates me

        • starz31 says:

i know what you’re saying and i can’t actually believe i might defend him, so instead, lets go devil’s advocate…

think about some of the random illogical and short-sighted comments we see here on metsblog and then thing about ALL the emails he probably gets which only multiplies all those mind-boggling thoughts and wouldn’t that drive you crazy over the years he’s been doing it. Plus, I remember him saying he has no allegience to any baseball team, or some noble cr*p like that.

          • JohantheMan says:

you do make a good point, i mean there are times on here i want to call people a dumba** (but i don’t, so i’m sure he could restrain himself) maybe that is just his personality, i used to read the inboxes a lot till they just made me angry and as i said before he doesn’t seem to care about the mets. I just don’t read his stuff anymore really, which is a shame because the inbox is something interesting

Johan, totally agree with you. While I actually agree with Marty in this mailbag, the contempt he shows for his readers is astounding. Especially considering his own limited knowledge of baseball.

To me, his attitude perfectly sums up the mainstream media’s stance toward regular fans — that of ignorant inconveniences. And while that may be true in some cases, we’re a large reason why they have jobs, and they’re attitude is a large reason they’ve become increasingly irrelevant.

  2. cb32 says:

Um, was this written yesterday? Angels won Game 3, and had more sloppy play with Abreu rounding second stupidly. Matt, are you in some kind of time warp?

    • starz31 says:

Thats exactly what Matt was talking about. He didnt state it outright, but he was talking about Game 3 and that before Girardi gift-wrapped the game for them, they almost gave that game away themselves. And b/c, in fact, they did win, will their sloppy play continue?

  3. gameball says:

    Three things at work here:

    Manager as Boss (is he respected, does he set a good example, is he fair, does he create a professional, no BS environment);

    Manager as Tactician (does he get the most out of his guys from game to game);

Manager as Evaluator (does he recognize the components of a winning team, can he work with the FO effectively)

Scale of 1 to 10; my impression of Mike Scioscia: 8/7/9

    of Bobby V.: 5/8/9

    of Willie Randolph: 7/4/7

    of Jerry Manuel: 8/5/??

    • Ceetar says:

hahahahahaha. Manuel doesn’t get more than a three in any of those categories.

In fact, I’d give him a 1 for Tactician. Give me one guy on the Mets that over-performed last season, consistently.

      • thedude says:

You don’t think calling Ryan Church soft because he couldn’t play well after multiple mistreated concussions is the sign of a great leader?

You don’t think throwing all the guys who played hard for you under the bus by saying “jokingly” that you deserved manager of the year for winning 70 games with the team you had this year is the sign of creating a professional environment?

  4. BringBackDaveTelgheder says:

Jerry Manuel couldn’t beat Scioscia in Rock-Paper-Scissors.
