Last spring, I got a lot of positive feedback from people when wearing this t-shirt from Red Jacket, which is essentially the 1986 Mets home jersey, but without the pinstripes.
In a similar theme, Matthew Weiler sent in the following design for a new Mets home jersey, using the 1986 racing stripes on egg-shell, with no black drop-shadow, no pinstripes, and no names on the back.
I like it, Matthew. I like it a lot.
I know there are traditionalists who believe every design should include the original, thin-blue pinstripes, from 1962. I am not against the pinstripes… it’s just, I like the clean look of the uniform without them.
Also, as a child of the 80s, I love the thick blue and orange racing stripe along the side of the shirt and pants, without any shadow or black in the design.
I feel like the Weiler Design is a nice hybrid of traditional and modern… also, it’s clean, simple, classic and new.
Nice work, Matthew.
So, this got me thinking…
If you have a design, do a mock up in Photoshop, and e-mail it to me. I will post the best ones during the off season, after which in spring we can have a site-wide vote to determine the best new look.

I really like it also, its like the jerseys the Mets wore with the giant NY on it. Im all for the Mets trying to mix up the uniforms and getting the black out all together. I really enjoyed the time the Mets wore the road grays with the blue hats against the Yankees two years ago
I liked the Giants one as well. i wouldn’t mind seeing an orange top either, although it might be a little bright. Maybe all orange caps on one of the white jerseys?
Yes – those throwback Giants uniforms, replacing the giant N Y with Mets, would be great. I loved the Mr Met on the side as well.
Names on the back are a must. Even most of us die-hards generally have a hard time remembering which number the 25th guy on the bench or in the bullpen is. nevermind the more casual fan that wants to follow along but doesn’t know the numbers.
I think I prefer the dropshadow, or at least some font-effect. At the very least, I don’t like the plain white/cream uniforms.
I agree, I like it, but, NAMES ARE A MUST !!!!
I like this design. The only thing is I’m not a huge fan of the racing stripe and v-neck. I prefer a button up jersey. It feels more classic somehow. But I love the color and no drop shaddow treatment of the logo. Nice!
Overall I like the design as well. It does remind me a little of the old Expos white jerseys, but nonetheless, it’s good.
I have to agree with Blue_n_Orange above on the button up aspect. Not a huge fan of the V-Necks, I prefer the button ups, but I’m ok with everything else!
I guess I am in the minority here when I say this uniform looks gross.
I’m with you horseman. I hate those 80s uniforms. They basically look like pajamas.
I don’t understand the fascination with those ridiculous racing stripes either.
Agreed, no thanks.
We need less uni-sytles, not more.
Love this design. Love the v-neck, the racing stripe and the blue/orange. Perfect.
I think the Mets could use a change after the last three seasons. I know the real change will come from the players filling these uniforms, but some new gear would be welcome.
I’d be a fan of this, either in the v-nectk or a normal collar and button up. The button up, with racing stripes and no last name, would look pretty darn sharp if you ask me.
I’m a fan of removing the last names b/c I think it gives a bigger perception of ‘team first’ and not just individualism, which this team has been accused off often.
I think Lackey and Holliday would great in the new digs btw :)
I could dig this, but not as a v-neck, as a button up, which I’d think they’d have to do; isn’t that MLB standard now? Or does it not matter?
I’ve also always been a big fan of the black uniforms, but not so much that I couldn’t move on without them.
Also, any time you remove pinstripes from the Mets uniform, I’m happy. Hate pinstripes on Mets uniforms. Hate ‘em. Actually, I hate ‘em on any uniform, but particularly the Mets.
Wow – I think you’re the first person I heard say something positive about the black uniforms. I myself hate them.
I think the vast majority of MLB teams have pinstripes on some version of their home jerseys. What’s the big deal?
I don’t like pinstripes. That’s all. And I like the blacks.
Actually, I’d really like the blue batting practice jerseys to be put into the on-field rotation, maybe as a home matinee jersey for Sundays or Wednesdays.
I’m with you on the blue jerseys. Those do look good during ST. And hey, it’s a Dodgers color, so you know the Wilpons will be on board with it.
The irony, of course, is that Mets fans insist that they want more Mets history and less Dodgers/Giants history, and they want more blue and orange… but the Mets colors ARE blue and orange because they were chosen as an homage to the Dodgers and the Giants. So when we complain, “there’s Dodger blue in Citi Field”… well, yeah. That was the point, initially.
Except that there isn’t any blue in CitiField….Met, Dodger, or otherwise.
If the Mets redesign their uniforms, only three things are guaranteed:
1. They will completely overthink them
2. They will reflect a total lack of regard forand understanding of thier fans
3. They will bring further ridicule on the franchise
What is so hard here? Look at the 1996 Mets…no black, pinstripes at home, gray “New York” on the road, names on the backs of everything. Done and done. Those were the classic Mets uniforms which harkened back to the 60s. If you want to add a royal blue alternate, fine, but anything beyond that is just another recipe for disaster from an organization that specializes in it.
Pinstripes suck.
They are uniforms. There is absolutely zero, short of printing ‘Yankees’ on them or outfitting them with lacy frills that would be bad or should be subject to ridicule. (which of course, the ‘96 Mets were, for sucking) There can be no disaster in something that’s cosmetic, merely a difference of opinion.
I don’t mind black. I don’t mind dropshadows. I don’t care how many uniforms they have and I actually like that they have more than 2.
“There can be no disaster in something that’s cosmetic, merely a difference of opinion.”
Obviously you were not an Islanders fan in 1995.
In general you should be right, but this clueless organization would be the ones to find a way to bring further ridicule on themselves. I just don’t get it – fans like the unifirms. Why are they tinkering? Fix your team. Fix your medical process. Fix your stadium. Fix your image. Seriously, the uniforms deserve zero attention given the state of this franchise.
Agreed. As an Islanders fan I’m still shocked when I scan the “crowd” at a game and see someone with one of those Gorton Fisherman jerseys on. And yes things can go even more wrong with baseball uniforms:

Are those shorts? I that even legal, lol
All you need to look at is the Dominos, I mean Citi Field logo they used this year. They always find a way to screw things up. I like the ‘86 look with or without the pinstripes. BTW I love pinstripes on a Mets uniform.
That was a Citi logo and worth 20million..can deal with it. The Mets designed one was fine.
I can’t say that I love this design. I do own an ‘86 throwback Hernandez Mitchell & Ness jersey, but that’s where it belongs – as a throwback from an era in the past.
While I agree the time to move forward has come, I still like pretty much all the current jersey options. But the have to be button down. Pullovers are not meant to be baseball jerseys. I dig the black, plain white, road grey and pinstripe. I’m even into an egg shell version from the 60’s. What I didn’t like is that they dropped the “New York” from the road black this season. Whatever design they use, I always believe the home. Jersey should say,”Mets” and the road one should say, “New York”.
We’ll all agree that who wears them is more important and that should really be the focus of the powers that be. Worry about this trivial stuff until after the real business is done. Because after all, it’s really about marketing and making more money.
I agree with that. The city name should always be the prominent wording on the road jersey, not the team name.
Earlier this season I bought a road gray “New York” jersey on sale in the clubhouse shop and was told it was on sale because it was being discountinued – that beginning in 2010 the Mets would not have “New York” jerseys.
Not sure if they will say “Mets” or “Brooklyn.”
or Dodgers
It looks like a Sunday softball jersey. Those are hideous! Get rid of the black too! If you want to do a new uniform take our original ORANGE and BLUE and work from there.
I agree…these look like cheesy JV high school baseball uniforms.
Three things:
1. Drop the black.
2. Pinstripes at home on egg shell.
3. Road Grays with New York.
Done.
I totally agree. I hate the black uniforms. I think the pinstripes and gray away jerseys. There should be some tradition with the uniforms. This organization puts very little effort into preserving traditions.
dont like the racing stripes at all…going in the direction of those astros disasters back in the day… and i love the new york road and have a hard time believing they would eliminate them…
lets go angels…one game at a time….
road grays, with blue hats
names on back
pinstripes with the blue socks
no more black
i like the batting practice uni’s also
this one isn’t bad but i want buttons also
I agree with mextache . Do you think the Yankees are worring about there uniforms? No its been the same for over 50 years pinstripes at home and road greys. The same should be for us. Lets concentrate on getting our team ready for 2010. We need pitching and hitting. This is a tough time to be a Mets fan Phillies in worldseries and the Yankees 1 game a way. as always LETS GO METS!
the angels really need another run here and i would not trust fuentes in this spot
