Alex Speier, in a post to his blog for WEEI Sports in Boston, says there is virtually no chance that the Mets will trade Carlos Beltran.
…i would certainly hope not…i mean, this is one of the best centerfielders in baseball, and as i said yesterday, the Mets should be building a steady core up the middle, and taking away this piece is part of the foundation of that core…
Speier says that according to a Major League source, the Mets will not even entertain the idea of dealing Beltran, and that they will be very active in adding pieces this offseason.
…Matt said earlier that Beltran would be more revered earlier after he left because people would realize what he brought to the table which is more than most…i look at this past season as being a good indication of what the Mets would be without Beltran, as the team was 34-33 up until he went on the disabled list and they were 30-44 while he was on it…

I was thinking the same thing this afternoon, and I came to realize that I would root against both teams equally; however if someone put a gun to my head, I’d root for the yanks to win, barely.
I will begin by saying that I think Beltran is the best center fielder in the league and has been widely underappreciated since he came to the Mets. I have been against splitting up of the Wright, Reyes, Beltran core ever since Francesa started talking about it a couple years ago. But, this could be the last chance for the Mets to get high value out of Beltran before letting him walk after his deal is up in two years or being forced to resign him at top dollar when he’s 34 years old. I don’t love the idea of trading him, but to lose him for nothing in 2 years or giving him a new deal that takes him until his late 30s is a scary thought that could handicap any retooling of this lineup down the road. I would say that a move like this has to be considered since he is the oldest of the core players. I have a feeling that this team, as it is currently built, is a wild card contending team at best, so why not look to something like this in hopes of a brighter future before Reyes/Wright get into their 30s.
You cross that bridge when you get to it. And Beltran’s value is possibly at it’s lowest since the 2005 season. Your better off waiting until he plays a full healthy year and wins another GG.
#1 trading him would be one of the dumbest moves ever made by this franchise (add it to the very long list lol)
#2 he has a full no trade clause so it would be very difficult..People forget this

I mean we’ve made some really dumb moves. I’m talking moves that resonate a decade later.
And I’m sure that arguments can be made for some of those 70s moves.

Lets get Miguel Olivo for catcher – I would just love the possibility of a HR from the 7 batter. Avg is around 250, which is solid for a catcher, OBP is no good, around 300. I just like the possibility of some power from our catcher late in the lineup.

Beltran is a stud and didn’t deserve the backlash he got for taking that wicked Wainwright curve for strike three in 2006.
The Mets should never have lost that series…it should never have come down to that moment.

I agree with that, it takes more than one person to lose a series. The whole team lost the series.
2006 seems like so long ago, the beginning of great things, what did we do seriously to make the baseball gods hate us this much that a mere three years later we have seen a phils WS and are about to see the yankees/phillies play the WS, why oh why
I’m torn on trading Beltran. I just feel that if the Mets keep him, he’ll blow out his knee and he’ll be done.
Leaving the no-trade out I would try to get something for Beltran now, while reducing the 18.5 million of his contract. If the Mets can get Ellsbury, Masterson, two other top level prospects and maybe even dump Perez on them I would do it. That’s $30 million the next two years. Sign Lackey, Wolf, Holliday, spin off two of the prospects and add other prospects to get Halliday and away we go.
Unfortunately Omar will never do this.
