Buzz: When will the Padres trade Adrian Gonzalez

by Matthew Cerrone

In late September, Buster Olney of ESPN.com said the Padres are unlikely to trade 1B Adrian Gonzalez this off season.

However, former Padres GM Kevin Towers recently told Bill Madden of the Daily News, basically, it’s not a matter of will the Padres trade Gonzalez, it’s when will they trade Gonzalez.

well, if any one knows their situation, it’s the guy who had the GM job less than 60 days ago

The 27–year-old, left-handed Gonzalez has hit roughly .280 each of the last three seasons, while hitting roughly 35 HR, 30 or so doubles, around 110 RBI and a .370 OBP, all while playing Gold Glove defense.

obviously, from a Mets perspective, he is a dream-come-true for first base… especially since he will earn just $4.75 million in 2010, with a $5.5 million team option for 2011, after which he can be a free agent, which coincides at about the time, hopefully, Ike Davis is ready to take over

…the problem is, he’d probably cost davis, and a whole lot more

…the team always linked in rumor to gonzalez is the Red Sox… if you recall, the trade deadline buzz had been hot and heavy talks with San Diego regarding gonzalez, and pretty much all of boston’s top prospects

Speaking of which, in the Boston Globe, Nick Cafardo wonders if, now that he has left the Red Sox to replace Towers, will Padres GM Jed Hower re-engage talks with his former team, and look to acquire some his former team’s top prospects, specifically Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard.

I’ll trade the farm for this guy, I mean he is young, a great hitter, a good defensive 1B and a good clubhouse guy. what else can you ask for?

Mets5rocks October 26, 2009 at 2:46 pm

A minor league system!

DominicanBoy08 October 26, 2009 at 2:49 pm

lol…we have one..I think..

Lorenzo23 October 26, 2009 at 3:42 pm

I think we have bodies, not prospects lol

I would love to bring Adrian here but lets be honest the Boston Red Sox could offer them sooooo much more and it would keep him out of the National League (something I guess the Padres would prefer). That being said, I cant get excited that they may trade him cause I know there is probably a 1% chance he comes here.

It's OUR Turn October 26, 2009 at 9:05 pm

It amazes me that people think we have NOTHING of a minor league system. Every expert says we have all the chips necessary for a monster trade this off season. Every expert says our minor league system is better than what most people tend to think and…

Oh yea… our minor league system won 70 games at the major league level this year. We fielded a team of minor leaguers and won 70 games. There were years where we thought we had superstars and couldn’t do that

Lorenzo23 October 27, 2009 at 9:23 am

Please show us a direct quote from these so called “experts.” Everyone in the media AND other GM’s say our minor league system is weak. I listen to WFAN all day and read almost every article regarding the Mets and not once have I heard an “expert” say we have a good minor league system. The only M@RON who has ever said so was OMAR MINAYA. If that is the “expert” you are referring too than I’m scared.

i’m trading davis for him, why not? he’s proven, young, great hitter he’d be great here, although i like fielder a little bit better

Mets5rocks October 26, 2009 at 3:23 pm

yeah, but who else would have to be in that trade,….? I don’t think the Mets can entertain trading more than 2 prospects for a guy and if they do, it probably would be for pitching as opposed to 1B considering our glaring need for pitching and the fact that Daniel Murphy is still on the team. Make no mistake Murphy can’t be confused with Gonzalez, but with so many other holes I would bet that 1B is one of the last on the list to upgrade. Besides chances are that if Gonzalez is made available that it won’t be untill the deadline anyway unless the Padres were overwelmed by a team, and the team doing the overwhelming is most likely gonna be the Red Sox!

JohantheMan October 26, 2009 at 3:31 pm

I hear what you are saying and I am a fan of Murphy I think he’s going to step up big next year. I’m just saying that I wouldn’t really hold anybody back in a trade for a guy like adrian and as i said i would prefer fielder.

Nicky Noodles October 26, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Fielder is a DH waiting to happen. At least Gonzo has some muscle. Gonzo reminds me of a smaller Pujols.

JohantheMan October 26, 2009 at 3:32 pm

plus if you do get a big bat for 1B, then you don’t need to sign holliday or bay and you can maybe go get crawford or keep pagan or something like that. It would open some other options, different ways to go about filling the holes

mark4212 October 26, 2009 at 3:42 pm

If you trade for Gonzo your not going to have anything left to go trade for crawford. You would be banking on a lower rung FA LFer or that Pagan can indeed play there every day.

A-Gonzo in a perfect would could be had by the mets. I think they have the chips should they want to go get him. it would be costly though, like say F-Mart, Davis, Holt/Mejia and Neise.

JohantheMan October 26, 2009 at 3:52 pm

good point with crawford, i was just trying to say that if we do get gonzo then the need for a big bat in LF goes down somewhat

mark4212 October 26, 2009 at 3:59 pm

I know what you were getting at… I just get annoyed when people get on here and kick and scream to do this trade and do that trade. I actually saw someone say to trade for fielder and Halladay. And trade Reyes, because tejada is the future.

JohantheMan October 26, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I agree we can probably only make one trade if we do make a trade i’d rather do the trade for halladay but gonzo is good 2 although he’d probably get a lot more than we could offer

and yes when people suggest trading reyes it makes me very very angry and i want to punch somebody in the face

Nicky Noodles October 26, 2009 at 3:41 pm

I’m not against us trading for Adiran Gonzalez, my only concern is that the Mets would have to empty their entire minor league system for this guy. I’m not saying he’s not worth it I’m just saying the price would be steep.

At the trade deadline, in August, Jason Stark was quoated as saying, “the asking price for Gonzalez is astronomical, three times the asking price on Halladay.” San Diego was asking for Clay Buchholz, Lars Anderson, Jed Lowrie, Ryan Westmoreland, Justin Masterson and others. Steep.

Gonzalez is a young, powerful, gold golve 1B who has a ridiculously cheap contract. The Padres can afford to ask for the moon because, frankly, he’s worth it. Everyone knows that, eventually, they’re going to lose him but in the mean time the asking price is off the books. If we were to trade for Gonzalez, they would have to sign Lackey as well and maybe even Holliday. My point is, you don’t trade the farm unless your making a serious run at Championship in 2010. And I don’t see that happenening…

jromer01 October 26, 2009 at 3:47 pm

If possible Minaya should trade the farm for Gonzalez, sign Lackey, sign Holliday and Ben Sheets… lets see if wilpon is true too his word. I am a die hard Murph Man fan, but Gonzalez is a superstar… he can rake and is a stud fielder. MURPHY NEEDS TIME TO DEVELOP… people need to realize that and stop bashing the kid constantly he will be an absolute stud one day. i would trade for gonzalez though bc this is a win now team. your best player and pitcher are both at the prime of their careers about to hit the downfall, obviousally carlos beltran and johan santana

Reyes
Castillo
Wright
Gonzalez
Beltran
Holliday
Frenchy
Santos/Thole
Pitcher

I only put Wright third and not Beltran to break up the righties and i would love to have gonzalez protect david wright.

Santana
Lackey
Sheets
Pelfrey
Perez, Maine

JohantheMan October 26, 2009 at 3:51 pm

that’s a team to go to war with

ExileInLA October 26, 2009 at 3:55 pm

The price SD gets for Gonzalez depends on whether or not he comes thru 2011 or longer – just like with Santana. If SD gives the acquiring team a window to negotiate an extension, they will get the same price for Gonzalez this winter as they would next winter.

So, unless you fill every hole in your system in one deal, why alienate your fans by dumping him now? So, what does SD need?

ARMS: The Padres need an ace. Chris Young isn’t quite that level. Maybe Poreda (who they got in the Peavy trade) becomes one in 2-4 years, but he’s AAA now. Heath Bell had a great year, but is now arb eligible and their best trading chip (other than AG). So, the bullpen may need help.

BATS: The Padres need to upgrade 3B — Kouzmanoff or Headley are both servicable, but nothing special. They are ok for now with Eckstein (who is pricey for the market), but aren’t committed to their 2 other young middle IFs. They have a solid group of OFs, and a good young C, and (of course) would need to replace AG @ 1B.

Can the Mets do any of this?

Our best pitching prospect seems to be Mejia – he’s 2 years away from MLB. Ike Davis, who would logically be part of any trade for AG, is probably 1 year away at best. We’ve got nothing at AAA for the middle IF. Any help at 3B would be Murphy or Evans returning to position – and if you compare Kouzmanoff & Headley to Murphy, all 3 look like the same player (Kouzmanoff with more power, but he’s older). Murphy would fill 1B for SD in 2010, and give them flexibility for 2011. Maybe Bobby Parnell gives them some bullpen help. (Don’t even mention Kunz.)

So, we’re looking at Davis, Niese, Parnell and Murphy for AG, plus AG’s contract extension. This also means that we have no SP ready to promote from our system until 2011, so (in addition to signing a #2 starter) we have to go out and sign another bottom of the rotation SP for 2010.

Is this the best offer SD could get? Probably not…

mark4212 October 26, 2009 at 4:08 pm

That package isn’t enough. And the mets could offer more then that.

Ruben Tejada is a slick fielding SS who’s 19 years old and progressing well for the Mets in their system. They also have Greg Veloz and Reese Havens further down in their system. Ike Davis would indeed have to be included as would one of Bradley Holt or Jerrys Mejia. That to go along with Jon Neise, and Probably F-Mart as the 2 guys who are near or MLB readiness.

You’d be looking at just spit balling. Neise, F-Mart, Davis, Mejia, Tejada, and go with a low A ball high upside pitcher and say Reese Havens. So you would be moving 5 guys in your top 10, and an additional player or 2. All for Gonzo.

Would leave your farm system further behind where it was this year, which nobody with upside on AAA, or AA except bradley holt.

MisterMet74 October 26, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Just to be a thorn in our own side I’m gonna make this statement, even though I’m sure it’s most likely not true. The $kankees will probably go out and get him to block the Sawx and platoon him with Tex at 1st base and DH since Chop Suey is out of his contract this off season. It’s in their nature to make such a move…thy can’t help themselves.

racemccloud October 26, 2009 at 5:52 pm

That’s ludicrous.

Mets5rocks October 26, 2009 at 7:27 pm

I agree, the yankees are crazy, but not stupid, no way they platoon a player they just signed to a record breaking contract for a 1B. That and even the Yankees can’t match the Red Sox prospect for prospect. Why,because the Red Sox have a GM with a clue about how to build and maintain a farm system……wish we did!

MisterMet74 October 26, 2009 at 11:10 pm

I know it’s ludicris. But I did say that it would probably never happen. I was just making a point how vindicive the $kanks can be when it comes to trying to block Boston and vice versa.
Also, I was not implying a true platoon which means one would sit on the bench. I was trying to say Tex and Gonzo would switch up at DH and 1B. Both would be in the lineup which would be absolutely insane.

racemccloud October 26, 2009 at 5:53 pm

The Mets should be in on A-Gone if he’s available, but I’d be hard pressed to think they could get him. Word seems to be the Red Sox want him too badly and they have more prospects to spare.
