News: Fernando Martinez is Running the Bases

Mets 21-year-old OF Fernando Martinez had season-ending surgery on his right knee in late July.

According to the team’s website, here, Martinez will begin playing in early November for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League.

…thanks to Rafael T for the link

“I have begun to run the bases and my body has responded well,” Martinez is quoted as saying, noting he intends to play left field.

He hit just .176 with seven extra base hits in 29 games for the Mets during June and July.

…i no longer know what to make of martinez… i see the potential… i get it…  but, in addition to learning how to take a pitch, it seems his biggest hurdle will be how to stay healthy… people who watched him in Triple-A this season raved about his overall game, saying he hit to all fields, had power and played outstanding defense… the question is, can he manage his body through a full, professional season… i mean, he has never played in more than 90 games in any one season, and this is the fourth-consecutive year he missed time due to some sort of injuryand so, it will be difficult for the Mets to build a team and count on him to ever plug a hole, even if, in an ideal world, he is more than capable of doing so one day

Speaking of prospects…

The team’s Instructional League started this week at their complex in the Dominican Republic.  To learn who is playing, and where they’re playing, check out this post from Adam Rubin for the Daily News.

This the worst Wednesday in our lives.

BringBackDaveTelgheder October 28, 2009 at 9:25 am

Next Wednesday could be worse, someone may clinch the Series then…

MeetTheMatts.com October 28, 2009 at 9:28 am

Damn you, BBDT!!!

ItalPiazza31 October 28, 2009 at 9:32 am

I hope that the Mets are able to add an everyday LF’er this off season (Matt Holliday is the guy for me) so that Fernando can start and spend most of the season in Buffalo. I think with his value taking a hit with his surgery this past season that it doesn’t make sense to try and package him in a trade. If the Mets are going to deal him it should be after he is able to build back up his value.

ItalPiazza31, we love you but NOT Holliday! He’s a bulldozer in the outfield – a one dimensional player whose home run totals will only decline at Citi… The Mets need rounded baseball players. Guys that hit, catch run and throw. There is a reason Holliday has been with 3 teams in 3 years – other than money. In fact, the Rockies made it to the playoffs without him. He will be awful with the Mets and will crumble under the boos…

Funny, seems like if read this before….but where?

Coolpapabell October 28, 2009 at 10:42 am

*i’ve

ItalPiazza31 October 28, 2009 at 10:47 am

He’s a bulldozer in the OF? What are you basing it on the one botched play in Game 2 of the NLDS?

Holliday is an average LF’er from a defensive standpoint. He’s also a guy that has decent speed/baserunning skills as he put up 28 steals in 2008. He provides power to the middle of the Met order that is in need of power. He’s in the prime of his career and has killed NL East opponents. He’s perfect for what the Mets need.

Coolpapabell October 28, 2009 at 10:56 am

He posted the same thing in the David Wright post, and you are giving him the same response he got in that other post too.

May be it will sink in coming from the seventh person to correct him. Lol.

MeetTheMatts.com October 28, 2009 at 2:37 pm

You guys are dead wrong about Holliday in the outfield. He’s below average at best… His power totals have decreased. He is NOT worth the investment.

ItalPiazza31 October 28, 2009 at 2:54 pm

Again what are you basing this on?

Holliday didnt do poorly in Oakland just bc the stadium was big, he did badly bc he changed leagues and had NO ONE in the lineup. Once he got back to the NL on a legitimate offense he put up numbers. The Mets must sign this guy, I just hope it is to less than 7 years since he will be 30 next year.

The Stache October 28, 2009 at 2:01 pm

You conveniently forget that in 2007 Holliday OPSed over 1.000 in September and put the team on his back through their playoff run. Additionally trading Holliday netted the Rockies major league pieces that enabled them to reach the playoffs in the current year (Read. Carlos Gonzalez and especially Huston Street).

Geez.

As is always the case with F-Mart, you cant ignore his age. The kid just turned 21 years old, and has been playing full season minor league ball since he was 17 years old. Thats a huge grind on such a young kid whos body is still developing to this day, and I dont think its unusual for someone in his situation to experience alot of bumps and bruises at a young age. Give the kid a chance, even if he plays all of the next 2 years in AAA, he’d still come up as a 23 year old in 2012.

murpheeee October 28, 2009 at 10:22 am

Thole was 22 when he came up, Murphy was 23. Both hit well when they arrived. F-Mart, for someone touted as a hitting machine, has certainly been underwhelming.

Fernando Martinez = Alex Ochoa = Alex Escobar

Tommy2cat October 28, 2009 at 11:49 pm

I’ve wondered about that.

F-Mart appears unable to lay off high fastballs, anything in the dirt and he definitely cannot hit a major league change-up. He’s young, but I was thoroughly unimpressed by his presence and performance in MLB.

He’s at least a year or two away and he needs to demonstrate he can endure a season w/o the DL.

Currently, I am neither expecting nor counting on F-Mart for anything.

JohantheMan October 28, 2009 at 10:41 am

I agree that F-mart was underwhelming when he came up but it was like, he came up didn’t hit, make that embarrassing goof when he didn’t run out the pop-up and then he just never find a groove, i can’t believe that a guy that was doing so well in AAA is a below 200 hitter in the ML. I would let him season more in AAA, he is very young

starz31 October 28, 2009 at 11:20 am

Wait, didn’t he have knee surgery in July? Is this just an error Matt, or was there another procedure in September?

Agees Catch October 28, 2009 at 11:41 am

I think FMarts value may be more as a fourth OF. If the guy can’t stay healthy for a full season, hand him the Angel Pagan role.

pundit October 28, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Every body is different. Some men have stopped growing at 18. Others at 22. For the moment, especially given the injury history, I think FMart is still growing. Good, he’ll be bigger and stronger when he gets to the Mets. Give him another full year in AAA, and he’ll be a better player when he gets up in a year – or two. He can succeed Beltran.

Tommy2cat October 28, 2009 at 11:53 pm

F-Mart is someone to defer on for the next year or two. Consider him to be a quiet investment, and if he matures into the real deal, then we are that much richer, that much more blessed.

In the same vein, if we resolve our outfield for years to come, and he starts mashing AAA pitching, he may resurrect his trade value, which plummeted this year.
