Adam Rubin of the Daily News believes Chip Hale will eventually be named Jerry Manuel’s new third-base coach.
Hale, 44, was third-base coach for the D’Backs, and was Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year in 2005.
Rubin says it is not a given that Razor Shines will end up bench coach, as the team is considering former D’Backs manager Bob Melvin, among other candidates.
…obviously, bench coach is a huge hire, because, whomever it is will likely replace Jerry Manuel, should manuel get fired mid season…
…mevin, who was a back-up catcher during his playing career, led Arizona to a National League West title in 2007, when he was named Manager of the Year… in arizona, they call him ‘The Mad
Scientist,’ because of the way he micro-manages his lineup, bullpen and rotation… he had been interviewed for the opening in Houston, which was eventually filled by Brad Mills… so, i have to think he will also be considered by the Nationals…
…i do find it very, very interesting that all of sudden, the Mets are doing a lot of talking with people with ties to the D’Backs… in an earlier post, i wrote about Sandy Johnson, who helped build the 2001 World Champions, and who hired Wally Backman to be the team’s manager at one point… backman is supposedly returning to manage the Mets single-a team… and, now, we’re talking about hale, who was third-base coach for melvin, who is being considered for bench coach…
…are the Mets trying to become the Citi Field D’Backs…
To learn more about who the team might hire to replace Tony Bernazard, read Rubin’s report, here.

I don’t know about becoming the “Citi Field D’Backs,” but I do know that, in general, I like these staff hirings.
I’m hoping it will change the culture both around Jerry and Omar and make them realize they have underlings with, in most cases, better track records than themselves, which should keep a fire under their asses all year long.
If the day arrives that Razor Shines becomes the manager of the NY Mets,
I don’t believe I would be able to accept that…
speechless, just thinking about it
I agree, I like these staff hirings, I hope that there are big off-season acquisitions coming, there needs to be a message sent that mediocrity will not be tolerated.
They’ve already send a message that mediocrity will be tolerated by keeping Manuel and Warthen. They’ll have to do a lot more then sign some coaches to change that.
i realize that, that’s why i wrote i hope
I wonder why they don’t promote Ken Oberkfell (sp?) to bench coach? They had him up as 1B coach in 2008 and he showed he could handle managing the batting gloves. He’s had proven success at every level of the minors for the Mets. Why not see what he can really do at the big league level?
Xavier you have been a Met fan your entire life and have witnessed the absolute incompetency of our front office starting from Jeff Wilpon and down… Do you really expect the Mets to make a wise baseball decision and bring in a guy who knows our organization as well as anyone and has had success in our organization to be our bench coach? That would be stupid LOL
Man, that sounds a lot like Davey Johnson’s career path before Cashen gave him the job…
I think you are reaching a bit here implying that Wally Backman’s hiring has anything to with him being in the Dback org for a few years.
Backman was hire for one reason, for good PR with the fans. He was hired because he is a Mets fan favorite and was winning player with the Mets.
Jerry is awful, Razor is worse. Oh God they’re just cluless. As far as last night’s game 1, did you notice how Victorino tried to knock the ball out of Posadas glove at the plate even though they were already up 6-0.
That’s why the Phillies are now in 2 straight WS and the Mets are at home. They do all the little things that the Mets don’t do. David Wright needs to take a hard look in the mirror this off season. I have not once seen that guy ever try to take a catcher out at the plate like that and he has the football type build to do it.
I don’t want to hear excuses that it’s not his game either. Make it part of your damn game.
The Phillies are in 2 straight World Series because they have had the best team in the NL the past 2 season’s. They are the one NL team that is built like an AL team.
It has nothing to do with toughness or any other myth people continue to mention about that team. Take a look at that roster, it’s filled with quality from the most part from top to bottom. Something the Mets haven’t been since 2006.
Agreed, they are in the WS two straight years because Gillick and Amaro really took care of their pitching in a way that Omar did not for the Mets, despite the acquisition of Johan.
They went for depth … and added Lidge for 2008 and Lee for this year and both of them along with Pedro down the stretch, Blanton, and others have made a big difference in their pitching.
It also seems like they don’t acquire and/or hang on to the pitching duds the way the Mets do — ie, Livan, Schoenweiss,. and Sean Green. Not to mention overpaying Ollie significantly.
In fairness, I much prefer having K-Rod as a closer over Lidge. And if the Mets were competitive, I’m sure they could have picked up Pedro down the stretch too.
But yeah, you gotta tip your hat to the Phillies front office. I really don’t know the quality of the prospects they gave up for Lee (and Francisco), but he’s been nothing short of fantastic for them. I wonder if they’ll try to extend his contract this offeason.
Speaking of which, the Phillies are going to have a lot of contractual headaches over the next 2-3 seasons.
Xavier, agreed about K-Rod. I’d rather have him over Lidge now too. My point was rather that Gillick and Amaro not only got top pitchers like Omar did, but they surrounded them with sounder pitching options and stayed away from these duds that Omar has a tendency to sign and acquire (Livan, Mota, Schoeneweiss, Sean Green, Takahashi). Sometimes the Phillies will get these duds too, but not at the same cost so they will more likely jettison the duds sooner than Omar will. And I doubt the Phillies would ever go for someone like Livan to begin with.
As for what they gave up for Lee, it was relative peanuts. I predict none of those prospects will amount to anything much, and it will be as insignificant as what the Mets gave up for Johan — the difference being of course that Lee had 1-1/2 years left on his contract when traded while the Mets had to sign Johan to a big fat contract immediately.
It’s true that the Phillies will eventually have to pay for all this talent, but if they win 2 WS in a row, then it will have been worth it. Gillick and Amaro are smart enough to know to strike when the opportunity is hot. If they have 2 titles in 2 years, then they can unload some of that talent if necessary in two years without too much guilt.
CLUELESS THAT IS.
So the braves are going to extend hudson, giving them a rotation of Hudson, Jurrjens, Lowe, Hanson and whatever fifth starter they want, with chipper, mcclouth, laroche and mccann in the middle of the order, and escobar and infante providing a formidle middle infield.
The phillies are what they are, the best team in the NL.
And we’re on metsblog debating which of the two necessary free agents we have to settle on b/c we can’t afford both, then we can add one more great player to our collection of 3, count em, THREE great ballplayers, one phenomenal pitcher and pretty good closer.
Yeah 2010 isn’t our year either
I’d prefer the Citi Field D’Backs to the Citi Field D’Bags we had to watch this year.
Well if you want to build like the 2001 D’backs…we’re gonna need another ace. Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson, thats why they won the World Series. We have our Randy…now we need our Curt. Lackey would be the easiest way to go, but he’s not Curt Schilling circa 2001.
D’backs?
What will the Citi Field Dodgers do then?
