Xavier, agreed about K-Rod. I'd rather have him over Lidge now too. My point was rather that Gillick and Amaro not only got top pitchers like Omar did, but they surrounded them with sounder pitching options and stayed away from these duds that Omar has a tendency to sign and acquire (Livan, Mota, Schoeneweiss, Sean Green, Takahashi). Sometimes the Phillies will get these duds too, but not at the same cost so they will more likely jettison the duds sooner than Omar will. And I doubt the Phillies would ever go for someone like Livan to begin with.

As for what they gave up for Lee, it was relative peanuts. I predict none of those prospects will amount to anything much, and it will be as insignificant as what the Mets gave up for Johan -- the difference being of course that Lee had 1-1/2 years left on his contract when traded while the Mets had to sign Johan to a big fat contract immediately.

It's true that the Phillies will eventually have to pay for all this talent, but if they win 2 WS in a row, then it will have been worth it. Gillick and Amaro are smart enough to know to strike when the opportunity is hot. If they have 2 titles in 2 years, then they can unload some of that talent if necessary in two years without too much guilt.

Well if you want to build like the 2001 D'backs...we're gonna need another ace. Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson, thats why they won the World Series. We have our Randy...now we need our Curt. Lackey would be the easiest way to go, but he's not Curt Schilling circa 2001.

In fairness, I much prefer having K-Rod as a closer over Lidge. And if the Mets were competitive, I'm sure they could have picked up Pedro down the stretch too.

But yeah, you gotta tip your hat to the Phillies front office. I really don't know the quality of the prospects they gave up for Lee (and Francisco), but he's been nothing short of fantastic for them. I wonder if they'll try to extend his contract this offeason.

Speaking of which, the Phillies are going to have a lot of contractual headaches over the next 2-3 seasons.

Agreed, they are in the WS two straight years because Gillick and Amaro really took care of their pitching in a way that Omar did not for the Mets, despite the acquisition of Johan.

They went for depth ... and added Lidge for 2008 and Lee for this year and both of them along with Pedro down the stretch, Blanton, and others have made a big difference in their pitching.

It also seems like they don't acquire and/or hang on to the pitching duds the way the Mets do -- ie, Livan, Schoenweiss,. and Sean Green. Not to mention overpaying Ollie significantly.

So the braves are going to extend hudson, giving them a rotation of Hudson, Jurrjens, Lowe, Hanson and whatever fifth starter they want, with chipper, mcclouth, laroche and mccann in the middle of the order, and escobar and infante providing a formidle middle infield.

The phillies are what they are, the best team in the NL.

And we're on metsblog debating which of the two necessary free agents we have to settle on b/c we can't afford both, then we can add one more great player to our collection of 3, count em, THREE great ballplayers, one phenomenal pitcher and pretty good closer.

Yeah 2010 isn't our year either

The Phillies are in 2 straight World Series because they have had the best team in the NL the past 2 season's. They are the one NL team that is built like an AL team.

It has nothing to do with toughness or any other myth people continue to mention about that team. Take a look at that roster, it's filled with quality from the most part from top to bottom. Something the Mets haven't been since 2006.

Jerry is awful, Razor is worse. Oh God they're just cluless. As far as last night's game 1, did you notice how Victorino tried to knock the ball out of Posadas glove at the plate even though they were already up 6-0.

That’s why the Phillies are now in 2 straight WS and the Mets are at home. They do all the little things that the Mets don’t do. David Wright needs to take a hard look in the mirror this off season. I have not once seen that guy ever try to take a catcher out at the plate like that and he has the football type build to do it.

I don’t want to hear excuses that it’s not his game either. Make it part of your damn game.
