The can't trade for both Gonzalez/Fielder and Crawford. They will have no farm left. The obvious best option is to trade for Gonzalez due to the combination of youth, power, and his inexpensive contract over the next two years.

If the Mets are smart they won't get Holliday. With all the holes this team needs to fill ! Holliday is not worth the gamble to break the bank. 1st Priority! Adrian Gonzalez or Prince Fielder ! Mets must make one of these guys thier 1b then look to lf in Carl Crawford if he came available or Johnny Damon

The Mets won't get either Bay or Holliday. My guess is they won't even seriously try.

My guess is that If the Yankees end up losing the WS, they're going to go after Holliday to bolster their OF offense. Damon is 36 and can't throw to save his life.

Come to think of it, the Yankees will probably pursue Holliday even if they win the WS. Pay him $150 mil for eight years, presto.

The comment section for the entry on the Mets and paying over slot is closed so I'll post an opinion here.

What the agents said -- that they think the Mets won't pay over slot so as a result top players won't slip to them -- makes no sense. Because since there supposedly are plenty of other teams that would pay over slot and who would draft both before and after the Mets why would the Mets matter to a prospect??? The Mets would then be irrelevant to a prospect's demands for money because if he can't get it from the Mets, he'll get it from someone else -- if what those agents say is true. More piling on?

On another note -- Die Yankees, die!

Let the giants and red sox get in a bidding war for him. He has disaster for the mets written all over him, especially if he gets a silly contract (5 years or 15+ mill/year.

Of course the Giants would pursue Bay, they can't afford Holiday. But, to me neither make sense for the Giants as they have several good hitting outfielders in their minor league system! They really only need a guy for 2 years maybe 3 tops 'till their kids are ready. No way either Bay or Holiday signs for 3 years or less. That is part of the reason Manny isn't wearing a Giant uniform, the Giant's have such as much many times.

And I know some people are going to say, "Oh yeah?! What about Beltran?!" The Mets only got him because the Yankees did not want him. He FELL to the Mets in an offseason that I still think the Yankees regret.

If the Sox don't get Bay, they will go after Holliday. If the Sox go after Holliday, the Yankees will do the same (even if it is only to drive up the price for the Sox). If that happens, I don't think the Mets have a chance at Holliday. The only way they do is by blowing everyone else away for the top free agent hitter of the offseason, something they have never done in the history of the team.
