Given the way this team has performed on and off the field, the Hot Stove is better than anything. It gives us a chance to dream. Gonzalez would be a perfect fit for this team at the right price. But, it shouldn't be their number one priority. Pitching should always come first, especially in Citi Field. This current squad should start with Pitching, go to speed and defense and finally a big bopper. The 2009 team couldn't do any of the above. If you were to develop that great, fantastic wish list for free agents or players to trade for it would read as follows:

1) Lackey
2) Halladay
3) Bey
4) Gonzalez
5) Crawford

If it ends up costing Davis, which it 80% would, then you send him. Davis has proven absolutely nothing at the big league level. I think that we could all agree that best Davis possibly could be is a player like Gonzales, but that is not the likely outcome.

Plus, this current incarnation of this team is built to win now. Getting Adrian Gonzales would go a long way toward actually winning. Of course, since he is signed to a great contract, the Mets would not necessarily be out of the Lackey running.

If you can get Gonzales, DO it. I would hate to lose guys like FMart, and a promising kid like Mejia, but to get a player like Adrian, you do it.

I agree, because it gives them flexibility. In two years, if Gonzalez costs too much to re-sign, we can trade him and slot Ike Davis in at 1B. If we did sign A-Gone after two years, Davis could move to RF, because he has an incredible arm.

GET THIS GUY...NL ranks in 2009:
5th in NL in HR (40)
1st in NL in BB (119)
7th in NL in OBP (.407)
10th in NL in SLG (.551)
5th in NL in OPS (.958)

Plus he plays solid defense. I wouldn't put him in the class of Teixeira or Pujols, but he is an excellent, big target defender at first base.

He's only 27 and he is only due 4.75 million in 2010 and a 5.5 million club option in 2011. You know he is going to play unbelievable baseball for the next two years in search of a $140 million contract. That's two years of production at a cost that allows the Mets the freedom to spend money on pitching, pitching, and more pitching.

I'm not going to throw out names of who they could trade away in such a deal, as I think it is useless to do so given that you never know what a particular club is after. Regardless, I am one of the few who DO FEEL the Mets could get a deal done for him.

Conversely this is what I love about Hot Stove. The rumors flying around give baseball diehards that fix between the WS and pitchers and catchers. Bring the rumors on...

And somehow get Gonzalez in blue and orange.

This is why I hate hot stove season. All the crazy rumors and speculation for the sake of columns and news.

"I saw Minaya shake Delgado's hand at a charity dinner. The Mets may be considering bring Delgado back."
