Buzz: Holliday vs. Bay

by Michael Baron on November 1st, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Jon Heyman of SI.com is reporting that in a phone interview, Joe Urbon, the agent for Jason Bay, is calling his client “the most complete player on the market”.

According to Heyman, Matt Holliday‘s agent, Scott Boras was shocked by Urbon’s claim, calling Holliday “the only young complete free agent player available.”

Regarding Holliday, Boras drew statistical comparisons to Mark Teixeira who signed an eight year, $180 million contract last winter with the Yankees, to back up his claim.

Read: Sean Green and 2010

by Michael Baron on November 1st, 2009 at 9:24 am

Phil Hoops, in a post for Bleacher Report, analyzes Sean Green and his performance this past season, and whether or not the Mets should bring him back in 2010.

Hoops breaks down his performance on a month to month basis, and says that while he struggled early on, he performed real well after modifying his delivery and release point and that it might be worth bringing Green back in 2010 because he is a low risk option.

…i agree with Phil – i think that they should consider bringing him back, simply because if he is right, he can be solid against tough right handers…

…however, when he wasn’t right, he really created a hole…he did lose games simply by hitting a batter with the bases loaded and walked in the winning run, but there were times, especially towards the end of the year when he was real solid and at the very least, he deserves a look if other options don’t work out…

…i think that part of the problem with the Mets bullpen over the past few seasons is that they have been overused and over-managed…i think that they have a lot of specialists, designed to get either a tough lefty out or a tough righty out, and they get left in to face hitters that are likely to beat them up…

…the overuse stems from their starters inability to go deep into games, and repeated use day after day…i mean, Pedro Feliciano had an outstanding 2009 campaign, but he has pitched in 52 percent of the team’s games since the beginning of 2007 so the question i ask is when is all of that mileage going to catch up with pitchers like Feliciano

Buzz: Cubs Deny Deal for Wells-Bradley Swap

by Michael Baron on November 1st, 2009 at 8:04 am

In a report for ESPN.com, Bruce Levine says that the Cubs are denying that they have discussed swapping disgruntled outfielder Milton Bradley for Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells.

Bradley has two years and $21.5 million remaining on his contract, while Wells has five years and $98.5 million remaining.

…i think it’s obvious that these two players are on the trading block, but neither player intrigues me as an option for the MetsWells would be interesting if not for the contract that comes with him…but the contract J.P. Ricciardi signed him to simply cannot be justified based on his performance over his career, especially in 2009…

…regarding Wells, i look at it this way – he is due $35.5 million over the next two years, and in the last three seasons he has hit 41 home runs and 224 RBI in 415 games, not to mention what he is due after that…Carlos Beltran is due $37 million over the next two years but has hit 70 home runs and 272 RBI in 386 games over that same three year period…

Levine says a possibility of swapping Bradley for Rays outfielder and designated hitter Pat Burrell or Angels outfielder  Gary Matthews Jr. exists.
