actually, a good showing here improves his trade value with SD for Gonzalez … we win either way … but, we don’t need Davis if we bring in Gonzalez.

Dunn was the only other reasonable stop gap answer to Davis … but he is signed through next year with WAS … and do not even consider trading Davis for Dunn … albeit, it would not surprise me at all with Omar.

most of us here agree not to rush him.

Now I know he was blocked by Jim Tome, but Ryan Howard didn’t make it to the show until he was 26 and a minor league HR king. By the time he got his chance, he was more than ready. I’d rather him be that, than overmatched.

Perfect explanation.

We need more people to keep hammering this home.

Murphy played above average defense. Something the Mets hadn’t had since John Olerud.

His bat is a little more of a question mark. He hit well for 49 games in 2008. Hit well for the first 20 games of 2009. Struggled terribly for the next 26, then had a pretty rough 51 games. He finished the year strong with a impressive 58 games.

So overall he had 120 good games, and 77 poor games. This will be his year to show if he’s an MLB starting player or if he’s a part time player.

Murphy is a better answer than Delgado. I don’t understand this fascination with a 37 year old first baseman who spent basically the whole season on the DL, plays “bored” and has DH written all over him.

Delgado will cost at least $5M and I’d rather they spend that money improving the bullpen and the bench.

Plus, Murphy has shown steady improvement over the season and frankly, I’d like the Mets to have some faith in their home grown talent and give him a chance to improve further. It’s not unreasonable to expect 15-20 HRs out of Murphy in 2010. If they get a power bat in LF, I have no problem with Murphy batting 7th in the order.

If Murphy continues to improve and Davis develops in AA and AAA next year, the Mets will have a nice trading chip in Murphy next off season.

Murphy played plus defense last year (+5 UZR or something like that) and is capable of potentially giving you an .800 OPS next year – if not close to it. No sense in paying big bucks to roll the dice on Delgado there, unless he is dirt cheap. I’d rather the money go towards pitching and Holliday, where it is far more needed.

Agreed. The worst thing they can do is rush him and him not be ready then hurt his confidence. They need a 2010 stop gap that’s why I think if Delgado can be that answer. He has had the whole year to get healthy and now a whole off season and he has the legit power Citi needs. He can be had on the cheap and it would allow them to spend money on a starter and a left fielder.

Don’t rush him, this guys has had like half a year in Double A. If he has a nice year again you bring him up when the rosters expand.

I agree, I really hope Davis can turn into that “thumper” we have missed since Piazza in his prime. I don’t think Davis should be rushed though.

I really hope davis is the real deal, there is nothing better than seeing a homegrown player become a star.
