Mets 1B prospect Ike Davis will play in this year’s 2009 Rising Stars Showcase, in the Arizona Fall League, which you can watch live on the MLB Network, Saturday, Nov. 7, at 4:15 pm.
According to Marty Noble of MLB.com, “When the Mets staff assembled in Arizona last month, it did so at least partially to watch Davis, who has become a bright beacon on the club’s horizon.”
Speaking of prospects…
Mike Newman, of Scouting the Sally League, provides a detailed report on Mets 19-year-old pitching prospect Kyle Allen, who Newman calls, “one of the most promising pitchers I had the chance to see this season.”
This season for the Single-A Savannah Sand Gnats, Allen was 9–6 with a 3.45 ERA in 125 innings, during which he struck out 111 batters and walked just 51.
Adam Rubin of the Daily News explains why Nick Evans is now playing in the AFL, all because of Lucas Duda.
Meanwhile, in a post to his blog CheMETStry, T.J. asks, “What’s the big deal about Fernando Martinez?”
Lastly, in a post to Brooklyn Met Fan, Adam feels he has an answer for Baseball Prospectus’s Kevin Goldstein, who yesterday wondered why there is so much hype surrounding Jenrry Mejia.
ok, so because Fmart doesn’t have a similar batting average (power numbers arent far off) to one of the best hitters of all-time (Arod) at the same age…he’s gonna be a bust. Very in depth reporting there.
Fmart needs more time, simply put, at any level before evaluations can be made. He played very well in AAA this past year, but only in 45 games. He hasn’t finished a full season at any level in his young career yet. Let’s let him play out a little.
Now, I agree, his hype needs to be brought back a little until the results speak for themselves, but the same goes for calling him a bust. He’s barely 21 (just turned it)…I’ve seen glimpses of his talent, he just needs more healthy playing time.
Yea you have to keep in mind that righ now hes still younger than most of the college juniors drafted in this past junes draft, and most of those players, even the top-10 studs type studs, generally head for A-ball, and at this point Fernando has has sucess at the AAA level and even gotten a crack at the majors already.
Good job not looking at any stats and going on one line of BA reporting.
Never mind the fact that Mejia only had 39 walks in 94 innings in A and AA this year with 91 strikeouts. that’s a 2.4- 1 K/BB ratio.
Baseball America released their new Top 50 prospects list today. Brad Holt and Jenrry Mejia both made the cut in the 26-50 range.
Both righties blew through Advanced-A this year on their way to AA. Holt missed a couple of starts with an ankle injury, and has taken three starts to shake off the rust, but is conclusively back after a 10 strikeout/1 walk effort over five innings Wednesday night.
Mejia hasn’t pitched since June 23rd. In his first four AA starts, he’s fanned 24, walked nine and posted a gb/fb ratio of two while hitting 97 and regularly throwing 94-95 mph.
He came back later in the year and struggled a little in 5 appearances and hasn’t been the same since his injury in the AFL.
I think it’s unfair to compare F-Mart to Jeter and A-Rod. A-rod is a top 5 All-Time righty, and Jeter is, well, Jeter…career .300 hitter with plus power.
F-Mart was overmatched this year. Yes, he is overhyped-the media makes him seem like the next big thing. Is he a future All-Star? Maybe. Will he be a good MLB player? Could very well be. He’s not going to be a superstar, I don’t think. He isn’t the next messiah. But that doesn’t necessarily make him a huge bust.
Averaging about 15 HR a year is not “plus power.”
I know I’m not breaking new ground here, but I find that I have to remind myself that there is a lot of young upside on our team. It’s a byproduct of EVERYTHING going wrong this past year that we’re so down on our young talent. I still think Parnell and stokes have bright futures. John Neise could very well make a full recovery and go right back to being a high-end prospect, same for fmart. Yes, even Murphy and Francour have a lot of upside. And who knows, maybe Mejia, Ike Davis, or Josh Thole actually turn the hype into stardom. Maybe the Mets don’t mess up the draft this year. Maybe we get chapman.
I’m not saying all these things are going to happen, but I’d say it’s probable that some of them will. There is reason for hope!
(and maybe we’ll trade for Roy Halladay, and everything will be ok in the world).
