Buzz: Mets would like Another Shot at Randy Wolf
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 5, 2009 8:06 pm

In an appearance on the MLB Network today, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said the Mets would ‘love a do-over’ with free-agent LHP Randy Wolf, who they had a chance to sign to a one-year deal last off season, but instead they chose to re-sign Oliver Perez.

The 33–year-old Wolf was 11–7 with a 3.23 ERA in 34 starts for the Dodgers in 2009, during which he struck out 160 batters in 214 innings.

…wolf signed with the Dodgers, left, then signed with the Dodgers again… he was born in that area of California, and he is said to love playing out there… the Dodgers need pitching and he had a nice season for them… and so, it’s hard to see him not staying put…  but, of course, money talks… it’s just, as much as i am intrigued by wolf, and think he’d be a nice fit for the Mets, in terms of acquiring a reliable and effective pitcher, i am not sure he is worth overpaying for

Additionally, Heyman believes the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox and Braves, and may be the Giants, will all be players for free-agent OF Matt Holliday, who, he says, “is a long shot to re-sign with the Cardinals.”

On the other hand, he said free-agent OF Jason Bay enjoyed his time in Boston, where he would love to return, and while the Red Sox would like to bring him back, all of the teams who are interested in Holliday will also be interested in Bay.

Heyman believes free-agent RHP John Lackey could get close to $100 million, “and the Yankees are definitely looking at him.”

he would be nice a addition after we add a real #2 starter. he is not a #2 starter IMO.

  2. Agees Catch says:

I still believe Holliday will resign with St Louis. I think there is pressure on the Cards to get it done in light of Pujols contract.

Bay in the Bronx makes a lot of sense. Somebody has to replace Matsui

Lackey is the key to our off season. If we have to overspend on a player, he is it

  3. brye65 says:

I don’t see Lackey as a Met and I don’t see him as a $20 million pitcher but I do seeing him get it due to the pitching demand. I like Wolf and love to have the wolfpack in 2010 but if that’s all your better off getting Lackey.

  4. Nicky Noodles says:

I still think Lackey should be our priority this offseason. I know we’ll be major players in the Holliday sweepstakes but we’re in desperate need of pitching.

We can’t expect to be successful by piecing together a rotation of guys like Wolf, Pinero and Sheets. They’re all quality starters but they’re not a #2 SP.

Lackey is that man and needs to be coupled with Santana.

  5. reillys5 says:

i would rather sign holliday over lackey… there are better pitchers to be free agents in the upcoming years and i dont want to be tied down to two 20 million dollar pitchers if one of them (lackey) really isnt worth it .. the only guy that is a fa right now that is worth overspending on is matt holliday, so sign him to shore up left field for the first time since cliff floyd.. then use the rest of the available money to sign two capable stop gap starters, wolf and marquis would go nicely with santana pelfrey and ollie… i also like the depth in the rotation other than santana – lackey – ??? – ??? – ???

    • Peter says:

If there are better pitcher available next year, won’t that mean the competition will drive their price down?

Lackey may be a little overpaid this year, but next year we may get a value. It evens out.

Plus, waiting for tomorrow is always dicey. Anything can happen between now and then.

I say get the best pitcher available now, coming from the AL to the NL and let the 2010 offseason take care of itself.

  6. MetsFan06 says:

How about sign both Holliday and LAckey. Omar said there isn’t a price limit this off-season and we have to do good this season or else Omar will be gone!

    • Nicky Noodles says:

I think every Met fan’s dream is to see an offseason of Holliday, Lackey and Marquis/Wolf/Harden but it just ain’t in the cards man!

We shall see. Let the games begin…

  7. mdfalcha says:

If the Mets miss out on both Holliday and Bay, I would expect them to sign 3 SP including Lackey and two of Wolf/Harden/Marquis/Garland. Maybe even 4 pitchers. They can’t go into next season with question marks in the rotation and not acquiring a power hitter.

    • MetsFan06 says:

THat’s when Omar is in troub;e and is fourced to trade for AGON or Fielder

      • JohantheMan says:

either Gonzo or Fielder would be a huge boost, Pagan could start in LF, ( i think he can at least) and Fmart could be up in a year or two

  8. MetsFan06 says:

Who do you guys this is better Fielder or Agon?

    • Nicky Noodles says:

If I had to choose between the two, Gonzo, every time. I like Fielder, I do. He’s young and powerful but he’s a DH in the making. He’s overweight and show no sign of slimming down.

Gonzo is still young and in great shape. He hits the cover off the ball in pitcher friendly PETCO Park and he’s left handed, which is favorable at CitiField.

Regardless, we’d have to give up a lot for either. Like, clean the house…

  9. JohantheMan says:

We can’t not get Lackey or another comparable number 2, we can’t just plug somebody in there even an injury risk such as Sheets or Harden, we need a legit number two. If the Mets want Lackey they can get him, they just need to pay for him, it’s not that hard. If not him then give me Doc Halladay, and I know I am going to get loads of comments about how we have to give up prospects but you have to give to get, he’d be great behind johan and solidify the rotation, Maine slots in at five and that is a solid staff especially if Pelfrey steps up this season. Again, I don’t want to empty the farm but if we aren’t signing Lackey, Doc HAS TO BE looked into at least. Pitching wins you games

The mets lost 44 games this season with a margin of two runs or less, a solidified pitching staff and a big bat are the solutions to that problem. Pitchers that won’t give up an extra run or two and a guy with a bat that can hit one over the wall. Again, we need to PAY the guys we want.

  10. racemccloud says:

Holliday over Lackey, Holliday over Lackey, Holliday over Lackey, Holliday over Lackey.

  11. Nicky Noodles says:

Just heard Peter Gammons throw out the idea of Philly packaging Cole Hamels to Toronto for Doc Halladay and I almost threw up. It’s only an idea, I know, but the thought of it made me nauseous!

  12. steadyeddie says:

Very sorry, but I don’t see Omar out manuvering Yanks, Sox and/or Braves.
I fear we will not be seeing these “sexy” names we are throwing out here.
    You know Omar:
looking for ‘lighting in a bottle,
    outside the box,
    salty ex Expo veteran”,
    types.

  13. Mitch45 says:

The Mets will not get anyone of note except one non-impact guy for show purposes and they’re going to trot out the same team as in ‘09 and promise us results because that’s what the Mets do.

We’re like the poor kids pressing their noses up against the toy store windows before Christmas, wishing and hoping that we get this or that, while the Yankees are the rich kids inside with a butler, buying armfuls of great stuff we can’t ever have.

  14. Bruce Boisclair says:

I think we are going hard after Holliday, with Bay or a trade as backup.

While I would love Lackey, somehow I don’t think we’re going after him. I think we will go after Wolf (sounds like he’d like to stay on the West Coast), Garland (who impressed me against the Mets this year), and/or Marquis (although I’ve never been a huge fan.) I think our rotation rounds out like this-

    Johan
    Garland
    Ollie
    Wolf
    Maine/Niese

(It’s not going to scare anyone like a Johan-Lackey combo would, but it should be enough to compete and possibly get in as a Wilcard.)
