I think we are going hard after Holliday, with Bay or a trade as backup.

While I would love Lackey, somehow I don't think we're going after him. I think we will go after Wolf (sounds like he'd like to stay on the West Coast), Garland (who impressed me against the Mets this year), and/or Marquis (although I've never been a huge fan.) I think our rotation rounds out like this-

Johan
Garland
Ollie
Wolf
Maine/Niese

(It's not going to scare anyone like a Johan-Lackey combo would, but it should be enough to compete and possibly get in as a Wilcard.)

If there are better pitcher available next year, won't that mean the competition will drive their price down?

Lackey may be a little overpaid this year, but next year we may get a value. It evens out.

Plus, waiting for tomorrow is always dicey. Anything can happen between now and then.

I say get the best pitcher available now, coming from the AL to the NL and let the 2010 offseason take care of itself.

The Mets will not get anyone of note except one non-impact guy for show purposes and they're going to trot out the same team as in '09 and promise us results because that's what the Mets do.

We're like the poor kids pressing their noses up against the toy store windows before Christmas, wishing and hoping that we get this or that, while the Yankees are the rich kids inside with a butler, buying armfuls of great stuff we can't ever have.

Very sorry, but I don't see Omar out manuvering Yanks, Sox and/or Braves.
I fear we will not be seeing these "sexy" names we are throwing out here.
You know Omar:
looking for 'lighting in a bottle,
outside the box,
salty ex Expo veteran",
types.

Just heard Peter Gammons throw out the idea of Philly packaging Cole Hamels to Toronto for Doc Halladay and I almost threw up. It's only an idea, I know, but the thought of it made me nauseous!

either Gonzo or Fielder would be a huge boost, Pagan could start in LF, ( i think he can at least) and Fmart could be up in a year or two

We can't not get Lackey or another comparable number 2, we can't just plug somebody in there even an injury risk such as Sheets or Harden, we need a legit number two. If the Mets want Lackey they can get him, they just need to pay for him, it's not that hard. If not him then give me Doc Halladay, and I know I am going to get loads of comments about how we have to give up prospects but you have to give to get, he'd be great behind johan and solidify the rotation, Maine slots in at five and that is a solid staff especially if Pelfrey steps up this season. Again, I don't want to empty the farm but if we aren't signing Lackey, Doc HAS TO BE looked into at least. Pitching wins you games

The mets lost 44 games this season with a margin of two runs or less, a solidified pitching staff and a big bat are the solutions to that problem. Pitchers that won't give up an extra run or two and a guy with a bat that can hit one over the wall. Again, we need to PAY the guys we want.
