Quick Q&A: Delgado in 2010, Murphy at 2B
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 5, 2009 12:22 pm

Chris G sent me the following e-mail:

“Can the Mets possibly stick with Luis Castillo for one more year and put Daniel Murphy in Triple-A for an entire season to learn second base?  They can then resign Carlos Delgado at first base, and, either by the end of 2010 or Opening Day 2011, have a brand new right side of the infield in Murphy and Ike Davis?  This would also allow Murphy and Davis to get some chemistry playing next to each other in Triple-A next year…  This would have to be the most cost-effective solution to the right side of our infield for both next year and the years to come.  But, would Delgado sign a one-year contract for cheap?  And, do the Mets higher-ups still believe Delgado can be an impact?”

From what I can gather, in 2008, Murphy played second base in the minors and last off season because it was the best way to get him at bats in Double-A and the Arizona Fall League.  From what I can tell, the Mets see him at first base or third, but not second, where he did not have the slickest foot work, even though he positioned himself and got to the ball very well.

As for Delgado, I think he will and should want to go to the American League and start the DH-phase of his career.  He does himself, and his hip, no favors by playing the field… at this point, he’s valued as a hitter, so he may as well protect that asset.

I hope he signs with a team like the Mariners, or some other mid-market team, where he can hit, collect his paycheck, avoid the spotlight and ride out his career in peace and quiet.

The way I see it, Delgado needs to move on from the Mets; and, more importantly, the Mets locker room needs to move on from Delgado.

  1. Why can’t Mets fans get it through their thick skulls that Murphy is not a second baseman? You cannot just take a lifetime corner infielder and make him into a middle infielder, especially at the major league level. It can sometimes go the other way around, but rarely does a corner guy develop the footwork and hands to become a SS or 2B unless they are very athletic. Murphy is not that athletic, so it will never happen, nor should it.

Murphy should be our 1B next season if we sign Holliday or Bay in LF, and then Davis will likely take over in 2011. Hopefully Murphy has increased his stock by then, and we can get some quality prospects in return for him from an AL team.

You know that no matter how bad an idea is raised, there will always be people popping up here to support it.

To me, Murph’s strengths (quickness, alertness, aggressiveness) and his weaknesses (range, agility) scream “corner infielder” But folks will try to fit a square peg in a round hole — I just hope no one in the organization thinks it’s an option.

Murphy should have his own set of “RULES”, like The Joba Rules: they explained away so many rookie mistakes for that guy, and mistake his ‘handlers’ made while they were screwing up a young player’s career path. Murphy is way valuable, but, he’s been maligned, not by his own short-cmings,but by being too hurried into action not presidented by his ‘natural’ position in the field. He is much more athletic than Delgado, for goodness sake, do not bring Carlos back! Protect our boy MURPH with “The Murphy Law” & let him mature right in front of our eyes!

It kind of seems that the whole organization was operating under Murphy’s Law the whole year

Again with this Delgado love. They should never have picked up his option last year in the first place – unless it was with the intent to trade him. I would have liked to have seen the Mets at least attempt to make a run at Teixeria. Oh well.

If they get a power bat in LF, then Murphy at first and batting 7th will be just fine. At most they should get a 1B-OF type to platoon with him.

    • No, enough with the platoons. Sign Holliday in LF, then tell Murphy right away he is our guy at 1B for 2010. Stop messing with the kid’s head. He obviously started doing much better when he played every day.

      • Xavier22 says:

I only mention platoons as an idea with Nady in mind. I can’t help it.

        • Yeah but knowing Jerry, he’d be platooning with Tatis. LOL, we don’t need that. I think a little trust goes a long way, especially with a hard worker like Murphy.

        • Fonzie86 says:

Bring back the X-man. Nady and Murphy could work very well together as a righty/lefty platoon. Also Nady could play some corner OF if needed and prove to be a useful player provided he is healthy.

“Delgado needs to move on from the Mets”- he DID, abandoning the team and going back to PR before the end of the season. It’s the 10% fringe that is so in love with him that they can’t let it go. He cost us 50-60 MILLION dollars plus 3 valuable prospects. He had a few good spurts but for the most part it was very apparent that he was “bored”. At least Mo Vaughn gave a damn!

  5. JohantheMan says:

Yeah I agree, I don’t want somebody who just went back home and didn’t even stay with the team even if he couldn’t play. He doesn’t seem like a team player. I enjoyed his time here and I don’t feel anger toward him but we need to move on

I also agree, if you can’t get a superstar 1B keep Murphy and tell him so he doesn’t have to go forever listening to, he can’t be the starting 1B

  6. MetsFan06 says:

I think he’s a bit old for the Mets He should sig with the A’s or MAriners. Or the white sox

  7. metskat says:

the mets locker room needs to move away from manual…i know they had a ton of injuries but the team still quit and i blame that on jerry…
