Buzz: Holliday is a High Priority for Cardinals

In a report in today’s St. Louis Post Dispatch, Derrick Goold says that re-signing Matt Holliday remains a “high priority for the Cardinals,” but indicates that no offer has been extended as of yet.

…i think that bringing in Mark McGwire as the team’s hitting coach is a huge effort on the Cardinals part to retain Holliday considering the two are close, but given the caliber of player that Holliday is, it should be a top priority to retain him in any way possible, but it’s hard to envision that the Cardinals can compete financially with the Mets, Yankees,  and Red Sox, especially if the Cardinals intend to make Albert Pujols a lifer

Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak told Goold:

“We need to spend some time with Matt and his agent and share what our vision is, what we have to offer, and at some point I’m sure we will…But at the same time, that’s part of why we traded for him, to get him here, and at some point you’d think he has a pretty good idea of what we have to offer…Most players, if they haven’t agreed to terms at this point, it means they are working their way to the open market.”

The Cardinals and Holliday’s agent, Scott Boras, expect him to hit the open market after the 15–day exclusive window expires.

…at which point, i think we would all volunteer to make a sales pitch to holliday…
