News: Brewers Trade Hardy, get Gomez
By Michael Baron - Nov 6, 2009 12:06 pm

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Brewers have traded SS J.J. Hardy to the Twins for OF Carlos Gomez.

The Twins originally acquired Gomez in the Johan Santana trade.  He scored the winning run against the Tigers that clinched the American League Central last month.

Update, 1:35 pm:

you know, i wrote yesterday about Buster Olney’s suggestion that the market would create a lot of deals like this, because of how the salary arbitration system is ‘broken,’ as someone told him… yet, here we are, and the three exact guys i used as exampled, in hardy, Jeremy Hermida and Mark Teahen, all have been traded, for the exact reason olney was referring to, which is teams do not want to pay the large salary figure that will be rewarded in arbitration, and would rather trade the player to someone else who will pay it, in return for prospects, or, if all else fails, non tender then guy, be done with it, and let him be a free agent

Sweet, now lets trade Maine to Mil for Gomez, clearing some room for a free agent improvement in pitching. Then, we would have traded Maine for Santana in the end.

But remember we got Maine in the Benson deal so it really is like getting Johan for Benson.

      • Tidewater says:

And we got Benson for Ty Wigginton, so it would be like getting Johan for Wigginton. And we drafted Wigginton so it would be like we drafted Johan. So see? Our amateur scouting is amazing!

Interesting trade. Seemed all speculation had pitching included in any Hardy deal.

Very interesting…I thought MIN was high on carlos gomez. other than Deolis he was the only one producing for them. Although his offense has been inconsistent, his defense hasn’t.

    • Coolpapabell says:

They have Pirdie, Span, and Delmon Young, so I guess they kept the better hitters. Span is pretty solid in CF. They probably also could not get a good enough return on D. Young, and his power potential is worth waiting on, I would think.

  4. Tidewater says:

What a terrible deal for Milwaukee.

    • therambler says:

Not really. Milwaukee had basically dumped JJ. They sent him down to the minors and brought up Alcides Escobar to replace him. It’s only a bad deal if they could have gotten more for him… and a 22 year old with a ton of upside and talent like Carlos Gomez, is hard to pass up. Great defense and he can fly…if a hitting instructor can get him to become more patient he may be a star.

      • Tidewater says:

Carlos Gomez is fast. That’s all he has going for him.

        • gameball says:

I’m not sure what to make of the trade, but Gomez is arguably the best defensive CF in the majors. That’s a little more going for him than “just speed”.

          • Tidewater says:

I’ve not seen his defensive numbers. I recall him taking pretty lousy routes with the Mets and making up for it with his speed.

            • thedude says:

Carlos Gomez is not the best center fielder in baseball. He’s fast, and, well, he’s fast.

Hardy is pretty talented and Milwaukee inexplicably gave up on him after one down year (which, incidentally is still better than a Gomez year).

              • gameball says:

OK, I’ll try again. This is not an opinion, this is a statement of fact:

Carlos Gomez is considered by baseball scouts, management personnel and media pundits to be among the best two or three DEFENSIVE CFers in the game.

I posted my sources before your response, but for some reason the comment is awaiting moderation. Maybe this one will make it through.

                • Tidewater says:

Yes, he’s considered tied for 3rd best in the American League.

But his offense is woeful. I don’t know what his WAR or VORP are but that offense is so bad, I don’t know how much that “d” brings it up.

I think JJ Hardy would have been a nice option for us at 2nd base if we could figure out how to move Luis.
I have other thoughts about the 2010 Mets here…

Except I do not think he has ever played 2B.

      • therambler says:

No he hasn’t but he is very good at SS. So the range and ability are there…i’m guessing for a starting gig…he would learn the position quickly.

        • wnymetsfan says:

But we tried that with another good fielding SS with great range name Jose Reyes. It did not turn out well. We need to stop putting people out of position especially up the middle. A good defense up the middle can be a pitchers best friend.

  6. racemccloud says:

    Wow. Hardy’s value has plummeted.

  7. chaseh says:

I think Gomez is undervalued on this blog (by the readers) because many had held him, and many before him, as can’t miss talent, that should be worth close to Pujols value. In reality, Gomez is still a bright prospect with very low costs and a lot of upside. He’s a major league CF who grabs extra bags, and he should continually improve his OPS.

    • racemccloud says:

First of all, nobody has the same value as Pujols, and speaking for myself, I never saw Gomez as a can’t-miss anything. He’s a speedster with solid defensive skills, but has a terrible .OBP, which is a skill that maybe can’t be learned.

But he still has value. My only thought when seeing this post was how far J.J. Hardy has fallen. Just two or three seasons ago he was thought of as an up-and-coming elite shortstop, on Reyes/Rollins/Ramirez level, potentially, and he just got traded for a 4th outfielder/pinch runner.

    • Tidewater says:

He would have to add alomst 100 OBA points to be acceptable. That’s unaccaeptable for a guy whose biggest threat is his wheels.

I think people on this blog generally OVERvalue speed.

  8. racemccloud says:

Wow. Has anyone else notice how quickly the offseason has started this year? It’s like teams and players are trying to stay ahead of the economy. “Let’s not get greedy, let’s get busy.”

  9. brye65 says:

So many fans down on this team for trading prospects and not giving them a chance. Now that’s 3 prospects giving up in the Santana deal gone from the Twins. Mulvey, Humber & Carlos Gomez. I would move Martinez now while he still has some value before he joins the elite group of Abner, Payton, Escobar & Milledge. San Diego seems to be a good fit for F-Mart
