So many fans down on this team for trading prospects and not giving them a chance. Now that’s 3 prospects giving up in the Santana deal gone from the Twins. Mulvey, Humber & Carlos Gomez. I would move Martinez now while he still has some value before he joins the elite group of Abner, Payton, Escobar & Milledge. San Diego seems to be a good fit for F-Mart

Yes, he’s considered tied for 3rd best in the American League.

But his offense is woeful. I don’t know what his WAR or VORP are but that offense is so bad, I don’t know how much that “d” brings it up.

OK, I’ll try again. This is not an opinion, this is a statement of fact:

Carlos Gomez is considered by baseball scouts, management personnel and media pundits to be among the best two or three DEFENSIVE CFers in the game.

He would have to add alomst 100 OBA points to be acceptable. That’s unaccaeptable for a guy whose biggest threat is his wheels.

I think people on this blog generally OVERvalue speed.

But we tried that with another good fielding SS with great range name Jose Reyes. It did not turn out well. We need to stop putting people out of position especially up the middle. A good defense up the middle can be a pitchers best friend.

Carlos Gomez is not the best center fielder in baseball. He’s fast, and, well, he’s fast.

Hardy is pretty talented and Milwaukee inexplicably gave up on him after one down year (which, incidentally is still better than a Gomez year).

First of all, nobody has the same value as Pujols, and speaking for myself, I never saw Gomez as a can’t-miss anything. He’s a speedster with solid defensive skills, but has a terrible .OBP, which is a skill that maybe can’t be learned.

But he still has value. My only thought when seeing this post was how far J.J. Hardy has fallen. Just two or three seasons ago he was thought of as an up-and-coming elite shortstop, on Reyes/Rollins/Ramirez level, potentially, and he just got traded for a 4th outfielder/pinch runner.
