News: Cora and Martinez File for Free Agency

Alex Cora and Ramon Martinez have filed for free agency.

Cora played in 82 games with the Mets and hit .251 with one home run and 18 RBI, missing a significant portion of the season due to a torn ligament in his thumb.

Martinez injured his hand sliding into home plate in early June after initially replacing Cora at shortstop, and hit just .167 with four RBI in 12 games.

I know we should resign Cora for a one year 1 mill deal. I don’t know about MArtinez. He’s good but for much?

Mets will not admit it but they are cash strapped.

Not resigning Cora and his 2million, and finding a backup at league minimum, will give the Mets more cash to spend on tru necessities.

They are not cash strapped, even Madoff didn’t take their money. And I’d say there is a better than 80 percent chance that Cora is in a Met uniform in 2010 unless somebody else gives him a 2 or 3 year deal which isn’t likely. Considering he was supposed to a bench player and wound up playing over half a season in games (bad thumbs and all) I’d say the Mets more than got there money’s worth from that contract.

Spending hasn’t been a problem since ‘04, spending wisely however is another story!

I don’t see how you decide to comment that the mets are cash strapped on a post that says alex cora and ramon martinez declared free agency, what did you think they were going to do? Last year Cora was signed to a one year deal, i bet the same thing happens this year, the organization is happy with Cora

Please can we wait to see how the off-season plays out before we start the cash strapped posts

Let them both go.

A) You can find players who are actually good to provide “intangibles”

B) Isn’t that what coaches are paid for?

good riddance to martinez. He is awful, old and very replaceable. cora on anything more than a 1 year deal worth 900K-1M is not worth it.
