Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News, lists the Mets top 10 Prospects from Baseball America, and 20 year old Jenrry Mejia is their top prospect.
Following Mejia in order are Wilmer Flores, Fernando Martinez, and Ike Davis, with Josh Thole ranking eighth on the list.
…with all of this talk about the Mets seeking a power hitting outfielder and potentially keeping Jeff Francoeur, i have begun to wonder how the Mets now feel about Martinez and what he is going to be…he has struggled with injuries so far in his professional career, and he didn’t show much in his cup of coffee this past season in the Majors, but he is still so young and from what i have seen of him in the minors, Spring Training, and in the big leagues is that he has a world of talent…but again, where does he fit now with this team…
Steve Gilbert, the Diamondbacks beat reporter for MLB.com, is reporting on Twitter, says that the Diamondbacks have exercised the $8.5 million option for Brandon Webb for 2010.
…this is good for Webb, as he will get another year to prove his arm is healthy before hitting the free agent market next year…
Webb is a three-time All Star and winner of the 2006 Cy Young Award, and is 87-62 with a 3.27 ERA in seven seasons, and he made his Major League Debut against the Mets in 2003.

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Brewers have traded SS J.J. Hardy to the Twins for OF Carlos Gomez.
The Twins originally acquired Gomez in the Johan Santana trade. He scored the winning run against the Tigers that clinched the American League Central last month.
Update, 1:35 pm:
…you know, i wrote yesterday about Buster Olney’s suggestion that the market would create a lot of deals like this, because of how the salary arbitration system is ‘broken,’ as someone told him… yet, here we are, and the three exact guys i used as exampled, in hardy, Jeremy Hermida and Mark Teahen, all have been traded, for the exact reason olney was referring to, which is teams do not want to pay the large salary figure that will be rewarded in arbitration, and would rather trade the player to someone else who will pay it, in return for prospects, or, if all else fails, non tender then guy, be done with it, and let him be a free agent…

The Chicago White Sox have bought out the 2010 option for 36 year old outfielder Jermaine Dye, making him a free agent.
The option called for $12 million for 2010, but the White Sox opted to buy him out for $950,000.
Dye finished the year hitting .250 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI for the White Sox.

However, according to Bill James, in his recently published 2010 Handbook, based on a variety of park indices, it was 10 percent easier for righthanded hitters to hit home runs in Citi Field than in other National League parks.
In fact, right-handed hitters on the Mets hit two more home runs in 81 games in Citi Field than in 81 games on the road… the righthanded hitting opposition hit seven more home runs in Citi Field than they hit on the road.
…the Mets should be using social media and their influence with the mainstream press to start pushing this talking point, i.e., ‘Citi Field is Good for Righthanded Hitters,‘ so to avoid people like cafardo being allowed to frame Citi Field as ‘death valley,’ which could negatively impact their ability to sign a right-handed bat…
By the way, according to James, it was 20 percent easier to hit a triple in Citi Field, but five percent more difficult to hit a double.
In the end, James says, it is five percent more difficult to score runs in Citi Field than in other National League parks… the same as it was in Shea Stadium during the previous three seasons.
…thanks to our old friend, D.J. Short, who sent in the above information… by the way, d.j. now contributes to Circling the Bases, the baseball blog for NBC Sports…

In a report in today’s St. Louis Post Dispatch, Derrick Goold says that re-signing Matt Holliday remains a “high priority for the Cardinals,” but indicates that no offer has been extended as of yet.
…i think that bringing in Mark McGwire as the team’s hitting coach is a huge effort on the Cardinals part to retain Holliday considering the two are close, but given the caliber of player that Holliday is, it should be a top priority to retain him in any way possible, but it’s hard to envision that the Cardinals can compete financially with the Mets, Yankees, and Red Sox, especially if the Cardinals intend to make Albert Pujols a lifer…
Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak told Goold:
“We need to spend some time with Matt and his agent and share what our vision is, what we have to offer, and at some point I’m sure we will…But at the same time, that’s part of why we traded for him, to get him here, and at some point you’d think he has a pretty good idea of what we have to offer…Most players, if they haven’t agreed to terms at this point, it means they are working their way to the open market.”
The Cardinals and Holliday’s agent, Scott Boras, expect him to hit the open market after the 15–day exclusive window expires.
…at which point, i think we would all volunteer to make a sales pitch to holliday…

In the Philadelphia Inqurier, Andy Martino and Jim Salisbury say the Phillies have not decided whether to offer a contract extension to Cliff Lee.
…frankly, i am surprised by this…i think getting lee locked up should be a top priority for the Phillies… then again, after what he’s done the past two years and this postseason, he will command a king’s ransom in his new contract, and the Phillies are probably trying to figure out how to retain him, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard for the long haul…
After joining the Phillies in July, Lee was 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts, and he was 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA in five starts in the postseason.
The Phillies hold a $9 million option on Lee’s contract for 2010, after which he can become a free agent.

Adam, the Brooklyn Met Fan, shares a Red Sox fan’s take on the Yankees ending their World Championship drought.

Kevin of Metsopolis feels that the rules of baseball need to change.

Former teams have until November 20 to negotiate exclusively with these players, after which they can begin negotiating with any other club.
