Tim Dierkes, in a post to MLB Trade Rumors, examines both the trade and free agent market for right fielders.
Among the names Dierkes mentions are Jermaine Dye who’s option was not picked up by the White Sox, Vladimir Guerrero, and Brad Hawpe.
…i think all of these players would be considered as second options if the Mets are unable to land either Matt Holliday or Jason Bay in a free agent deal, or Carl Crawford in a trade…
…it’s easy to be enamored with Dye…he does hit for a lot of power and has been a good run producer throughout his career, but his skills are diminishing and will be 36 on opening day, and he is likely going to be seeking more than a one year deal…
…Guerrero was supposedly on his way to the Mets in December 2003 before he signed his deal with the Angels as the Mets thought his back would be bad, and it wasn’t…that said, he is intriguing because of his big time power to all fields…but he will be 35 on opening day, he only played in 100 games in 2009, and just seems to be better suited as a designated hitter at this point…
…Hawpe has been discussed here since the end of the regular season, and i still think he is interesting as he put up solid numbers this past season, but evidently is a poor outfielder and doesn’t hit left handed pitching well as he hit .243 against them this past season, which would mean the Mets would likely end up needing a platoon…

Vlad’s time is over. The back injury that caused the Mets to balk in 2003 has finally reared it’s ugly head. He can’t run or play the outfield. He belongs in the AL as a DH. Hawpe is a nice fourth outfielder, but doesn’t fit what the team needs in Citi Field. The Mets would be much better with Rick Ankiel. He can cover the ground in Left Field and would give the Amazin’s the best throwing corner outfielders in the game. The team needs to look into Bey as their choice for outfield. But, their biggest need should always be pitching. They must go after Lackey with all of their resources.
I am a little confused. If Brad Hawpe is not the answer (which he isnt) how is Ankiel an answer? The guy hit 11 HRs in 122 games while slugging .387.
Even the mighty Yankees don’t have thumpers at every position.
I wouldn’t touch any of these guys for RF with Francouer in the fold. He’s cheaper, younger, much better defensively and has potential to emerge into a leader.
As far as LF goes…give Holliday Beltran’s 7/119 and away we go.
Ugh. It’s finally over. The parade, the everything. Let the Hot Stove begin. Omar is already drawing up 4-year deals for Matsui and Damon.
The Mets should feel out the RF market regardless of Holliday or Bay. It’s one of the positions that has significant room for upgrade.
come on. I know its a joke…but Omar has never made such a reckless deal before. Ollie is a young lefty and Castillo was and still is a top 2nd baseman who really, in the big scheme of things doesnt make that much money.
Now if you said, here comes Matsui on a 1 year deal to play left field everyday, that I could see. I doubt he will make that mistake again…unless all other options fail.
Just get Holliday and LAckey. THen go after Olivo/Molina or BArajas for a catcher. Then get MArquis or Wolf. Not HArden, Sheets, or Bedard because they are injury risks which OMar said that he is going to avoid. Then boost up our bench and bullpen. MAYBE trade CAstillo and sign Orlando Hudson
Everybody is an injury risk… Even Omar the Fortune Teller predict something like Bobby Ojeda slicing his fingers while trimming bush,,, Uh, hedges.
I don’t like Vlad, given that he is creeky and old, and I don’t like having 2 free swingers in the lineup…
I say that if the Mets can’t get Holliday or Bay, sign Nady or Dye.
sign dye for two years and then go for…pitching. pitching and more pitching…if you can do something about 2nd or catcher after that, fine…
I think that is a solid idea actually. If you can’t get 1 of the 2 bigs guys, just sign Dye nad then sign Lackey and another top pitcher then let the under performers maine, ollie and pelfrey compete with niese for the final 2 spots.
Why has nobody talked about Brandon Webb? That would be my number one target if I were Omar. The guy is a Cy Young winner and dominant sinker ball pitcher that would play well not only at Citi Field, but also in smaller ball parks against inter division rivals like the Phillies.
Maybe because the D’Backs picked up his option and he’s unavailable.
I think Dye has one good year left as a DH, but if we’re even minorly worried about defense, we can’t bring him in. This guy is a walking mummy out in RF.
I’m excited to see which aging, oft injured OF Omar throws 3 years at. Will it be Dye? Will it be Vlad? so many possibilities!
I’m sure Alou is available.
