Note: Davis and Thole Performing Well this Fall
By Michael Baron - Nov 8, 2009 10:15 am

In The Arizona Fall League, Mets first base prospect Ike Davis is hitting .328 with three home runs and 10 RBI.

In addition, Davis went 1 for 2 in the Arizona Fall League’s Rising Stars game, helping the AFL West to an 8-7 victory over the AFL East.

Davis has been very impressive this Fall and has certainly generated a lot of talk and opinion as to whether or not the Mets should give him a shot at first base this Spring…i think he certainly needs more seasoning in the minors…he has played in just 172 professional games so far, but i think he will spend a lot of time at the Major League camp this Spring, especially if the Mets can’t find a long term solution at first base this winter…

Also, Josh Thole is hitting .414 for the Leones del Caracas in the Venezuelan League this fall, leading the league in batting, and has hit one home run and 11 RBI in 22 games.

Thole was really impressive in his cup of coffee for the Mets in September, but kind of fizzled towards the end…i do think that this kid can hit, although i’d like to see him develop a little more power, and given that there aren’t any great alternatives outside the organization at the moment, i do feel that at some point, he will get his chance with the big club…

I also think Davis should absolutlely start the season at AAA. Yeah, let him have time in the ML camp in the spring to get aclimated and show what hes got, but make him go down to the minors to start the season.

Now, if he crushes the ball for a couple of months, and a hole opens up (OF or 1B), then sure give him a call.

If they want to consider him in copetition for the 1B job (meaning a huge spring can win it for him), that can be defended. Just annointing him now and not having alternatives on hand (like with LF last year) can’t be.

The Mets need to let Davis spend the year in the Minors, even start him at AA for the first month or two, and if he hits well, send him to AAA. Make him a September callup, let him get his first taste that way.

And invest in someone like Hank Blalock to split time with Murphy(not a straight platoon obviously). This way, if either one of them struggles, there’s not the knee-jerk response of calling Davis up too soon.

Patience and time for both Davis and Thole. The Mets need not rush Davis, and they need to get a credible backstop to teach Thole the ropes.

I am not saying this because of the events of this week or the proximity of the team, it is just a convenient parallel. Posada was caddy to his current manager. Thole is not likely to be a 20 HR 90 RBI catcher, but that does not mean he cant be damn good.
