Rosenthal: Mets, Jays and Cubs working on 3-way Deal

November 9, 2009 at 22:25 pm · 70 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

According to the Chicago Tribune, “Toronto reportedly wants no part of Milton Bradley.”

In Rosenthal’s report, he said the the Cubs initially spoke to the Mets about swapping Bradley for Castillo, and it was the Mets who roped in the Jays and Overbay.

Original Post, 7:32 pm:

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes the Mets, Blue Jays and Cubs are discussing a three-way deal that would send Luis Castillo to Chicago, Milton Bradley to Toronto, and Lyle Overbay to the Mets.

According to major-league sources, Rosenthal writes, “The teams indeed have discussed the framework of such a deal,” however, it is a ‘longshot.’

The 32–year-old Overbay hit .265 with a .372 OBP, 16 HR and 35 doubles in 132 games for the Blue Jays in 2009.

he’s an outstanding defensive first baseman… he reminded of Mark Grace when he first came up with the D’Backs, as he is very patient at the plate… however, has very little power… also, though he hit left-handed pitching pretty well earlier in hi career, they’ve been murdering him the last two seasons… and, in a platoon with Daniel Murphy, the ability to hit lefties is important

Overbay will earn $7 million in 2010, after which he can be a free agent.

Castillo is due $6 million each of the next two seasons.

For more on the state of talks between the three teams, and how the Rays factor in, check out Rosenthal’s report, here.

In September, Jon Heyman of SI.com said the Mets might try to trade Castillo this winter, ‘and take a look at Orlando Hudson.’

I’ll take Lyle, do it Omar, get rid of Luis.

Sampsonite168 November 9, 2009 at 7:36 pm

“…what the heck does, ‘not in direct fashion,’ mean…”

Uh, read the article Matt. It pretty clearly says “The Cubs spoke to the Mets about Bradley-for-Castillo, while the Mets spoke to the Jays about Bradley-for-Overbay, sources say.”

Agees Catch November 9, 2009 at 7:52 pm

This is a good trade. Murphy to 2B?

dwright5_godsend November 9, 2009 at 8:01 pm

No

DominicanBoy08 November 9, 2009 at 7:57 pm

wow, the hot stove has begun. if this deal happens, does it mean that murphy will get traded?

JohantheMan November 9, 2009 at 7:59 pm

i asume it means a murphy/overbay platoon

Coolpapabell November 9, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Yeah, the Cubs are about the only team that would take Castillo.I can’t think of any other team that desperate for a lead off hitter that they would trade OBP for a crappy glove and contract.

dwright5_godsend November 9, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Do it. Although Overbay isn’t going to help us that much, it means we get rid of Castillo. I commend Luis (as we all should) for his valiant effort this year (minus the dropped popup), as he did very well at the plate, but it’s time to let go.

This makes room for O-Dog.

Reyes, Hudson, Beltran, Holliday, Wright, Francoeur, Murphy, [catcher]

Sounds good to me.

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 8:06 pm

I want O-Dog.Sign him. So I’m guessing Murph and Overbay will plattoon. Is it only for the 1 player, CAstillo? Sounds good to me!

dwright5_godsend November 9, 2009 at 8:14 pm

These sorts of deals usually are. Nobody in that list is an eye-popper, so it’s likely straight-up.

I wanted Hudson last year, but Omar just wasn’t able to move Castillo (no mystery why not). Not only is he a solid hitter from both sides of the plate with a little pop (10 or so HR), he is the definition of professional athlete and would be a great clubhouse presence for the Mets. I think he would connect with Wright like Cliff Floyd did, which is good because someone needs to take the media pressure off David. He puts way too much stress on himself.

My guess, however, is that they flip Overbay for someone else (perhaps prospects). I don’t see them going with a lefty-lefty platoon at 1B, and there are probably teams out there that could use him more than we could. I have faith in Murphy’s ability to keep maturing and becoming a better hitter at the plate. Is he going to hit .320 with 25-30 HR? No, but I think he could hit .290-.300 with 15-20 HR and 75-85 RBI, if the lineup is healthy. People seem to be overlooking how good he was ever since Jerry started him every day…he and Frenchy were really the only good hitters in our lineup for a while.

This is a win-win situation for the Mets, though. Dump Castillo, get a decent bat at 1B, open a hole for Hudson (or as was discussed earlier, possibly even Uggla), and you now have an extra chip to deal in Overbay.

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Yeah. We get Overbay and we can sign Hudson.

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 8:10 pm

This deal makes sense for the Mets.

1) The Mets would save 5 million.

2) They’d have a rent a 1B. Overbay is like a better version of Johnson. He is still a good fielder and is healthy.

3) It’d open up the 2B slot for Orlando Hudson.

Everyone needs to get the Murphy to 2B thoughts out of their mind. It just isn’t going to work. Do we need to be reminded of how poor a defensive team we were last season? We couldn’t get away with him in LF. He made loads of errors as a 3B in the minors. He isn’t quick. It makes no sense for him to play 2B. I doubt Overbay would start every day. Murphy would get his chance spelling Overbay (and maybe Wright occasionally). The Mets showed in the last 2 months of the season they don’t care about Evans development. So he isn’t an issue.

Tidewater November 9, 2009 at 8:20 pm

How does it save the Mets 5 million? Overbay will make 7 million, Castillo will earn 6. My math says it’ll cost the Mets a million, plus they have to find a second baseman.

dwright5_godsend November 9, 2009 at 8:23 pm

He’s speaking in terms of contract length. Castillo is still due $12MM, while Overbay is due $7MM.

12-7=5

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 8:35 pm

And your good at math!

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 8:12 pm

Hudson won’t cost much since he lost his job to Belliard. We can probably get him at a reasonable price. No 4 or 5 year crap. Sign him to a 2 year/10 million deal. 12 million at max.

dwright5_godsend November 9, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Signing Hudson makes perfect sense because:

1) It gives us stability up the middle again.
2) We have a good bat in the #2 hole who can move runners and play fundamental baseball.
3) He’s a clubhouse presence, and guys like that rub off on everybody. I like the direction we are (or could be) going, personality-wise. Frenchy is as tough as they come, Holliday is the same way and he’s a superstar, and Hudson is a no-BS fundamental player.

These are the guys you want to build a team around.

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Exactly. We’ll know we’re making significant progress when Minaya and Manuel are gone too.

Xavier22 November 9, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Why did he lose his job to Belliard? Was it an injury or something else?

MW1218 November 9, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Am I the only one not enamored by this deal? The whole principle behind dealing Castillo would be to free up salary…Overbay is actually making $1 million MORE than Castillo, and wouldn’t give the kind of on-base production that the 2B would. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Castillo lover, but taking on an addition $1 million of payroll for a guy who is going to play less and doesn’t offer the same kind of production seems dumb.

JohantheMan November 9, 2009 at 8:21 pm

didn’t the dbacks want overbay? so we could flip him to another organization and sign a cheaper 2B

dwright5_godsend November 9, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Two things:

1) Overbay can be traded…if not this winter, then definitely by the deadline next year because some team will need a LH bat.

2) Overbay has one year left, not two, and is more reliable than Castillo.

3) Hello Orlando Hudson. We have stability up the middle for a couple more years at least.

I’m not in love with this trade, but it is undoubtedly a move that benefits the Mets.

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 8:25 pm

You’d have to consider Castillo’s 2011 salary too. He’s getting paid 12 million over the next 2 seasons. It’d save us 5 million. I’d bet 1/2 of that can be used on Hudson. If Hudson weren’t a free agent and they both had one year left, you’d be right.

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 8:22 pm

I’m going to assume Minaya has at least 40 million at work with. 30 million came off the books and the Wilpon’s are ”committed” to winning (not that we haven’t heard that before, but hopefully they open up their Madoffed check book). This acquisition only boosts that 1 million.

We should want players with as clean of health records as possible. That would make it makes more sense to pursue Brandon Lyon than J.J. Putz or Octavio Dotel. I believe it’d make more sense to pursue Jason Marquis than Randy Wolf for the same reason. I’d rather sign Jermaine Dye than Vladimir Guerrero (assuming we can’t get Holliday or Bay).

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 8:51 pm

40 million is enough for…

Holliday (7 yr/119MM)… 17MM per year
Hudson (2 yr/12MM)… 5MM per
Marquis (2 yr/16MM)… 8 MM per
Lyon (1yr/4MM)… 4 MM per
R. Hernandez (1yr/4MM)… 4MM per

Or…

Dye or Guerrero (2 yr/18MM)… 9MM per
Lackey (5 yr/70MM)… 14MM per
B. Molina (2 yr/14MM)… 7MM per
Hudson (2yr/10MM)… 5MM per
Lyon (1yr/4MM)… 4MM per

Put either of this together with Castillo for Overbay and we’re really filling our holes.

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Reyes
Hudson
Beltran
Holliday
Wright
Francoeur
Overbay/Murphy
Hernandez/Santos/Thole

Or…

Reyes
Hudson
Wright
Beltran
Dye
Molina
Overbay/Murphy
Francoeur

Even if we couldn’t get Holliday, it’d still be threatening to have a line-up where Francoeur is your 8 hitter. I’d position it that way with Beltran and Overbay splitting the right-handed bats.

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Didn’t Omar say money wasn’t a problem. We should be able to get Holliday, LAckey, Molina/BArajas/Olivo. Without a problem. We then can get another pitcher like Wolf. We could sign Hudson by trading CAstillo and MAYBE try to upgrade the bullpen and bench a little if needed.

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Reyes
Hudson
Beltran
Holliday
Wright
F-Core

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 10:21 pm

What Omar says isn’t always true. He said he was a ”Willie guy” on May 31, 2008 and wound up firing him less than 3 weeks later (even after he won 2 games in a row and 3 of 4). I’m not saying I’d dislike Wolf as a pitcher. I don’t like his health record though. We seem to have bad luck with that type of thing. The same can be said to Erik Bedard. The two pitchers I’d like to see most (besides Lackey) are Marquis and Washburn.

brye65 November 9, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Overbay would be alot easier to move than Castillo. If you can move Castillo in a 3 way to get Overbay. Do it!!!!

0h the ag0ny November 9, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Overbay is actually a nice player…

good glove, good obp, 20hr power, 270ish avg

&& he will be playing for a contract!

even if the three way doesn’t work, Overbay would be a nice player to revisit.

0h the ag0ny November 9, 2009 at 8:29 pm

BTW lets assume we get Overbay, Hudson, & Holliday

Reyes
Hudson
Holliday
Beltran
Wright
Overbay
Francoeur
Santos/Thole/Barajas/whatever

O.o .. good lineup

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 8:32 pm

I am as hopeful as you are. The only thing that’ll draw Holliday (or Bay) to the Mets is a fat check (plus more) without reputation being crap right now. I have no problem giving Holliday the same contract Beltran got 5 years ago. He seems worth the investment. I don’t know if they’d be willing to go higher though.

0h the ag0ny November 9, 2009 at 8:35 pm

I really don’t see how the Mets don’t get him

If you can get Overbay, Hudson, Holliday & only give up Castillo.. keeping all your prospects.. MY GOD

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 8:42 pm

That’s beast

0h the ag0ny November 9, 2009 at 8:43 pm

wright would bat 5th behind Beltran but yeahh its crazy to think about

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Yeah thanks. It’s just awesome to think about.

ae37jr November 9, 2009 at 9:01 pm

This might be a 4 team deal, which would make a lot of sense IMO. Rumors out of Toronto today suggest that the Jays/D-backs swap of Overbay/Snyder was nixed because Toronto had cold feet over Snyder. So it could be like this….

Mets get: Snyder
Jays get:Bradley
Cubs get: Castillo
D-Backs get: Overbay

From our point we’d fill the catching vacancy, open up second base for Hudson, and still have room to add a righty 1B to platoon with Murphy. I won’t speculate on the cash involved because usually things get evened out in deals like this. But Synder is due 4.75/5.75/6.75.

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Is Snyder good? Or is he like the other Schneider that we know?

ae37jr November 9, 2009 at 9:21 pm

Scouting Report
Assets
Calls a good game and rarely makes mistakes with the glove. Has a powerful throwing arm. With the bat, he possesses a nice mix of power and patience.
Flaws
Could stand to make better contact as a hitter. Behind the plate, his strong arm is not always accurate.
Career potential
A solid starting catcher

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 9:24 pm

He’s sounds like a defensive Schneider. Better at hitting it seems. There are still Olivo/Molina or BArajas who are better.

reillys5 November 9, 2009 at 9:31 pm

i would rather get overbay to platoon at first then get synder to catch

by the way… metsfan06: lol every time i read a comment i dont even have to look at the name because i know its you.. every time you write a name you put two capitals… LAckey.. BArajas… lol how come?

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Dude, that is so funny. I don’t know why. I just type fast and I don’t go through what I wrote. A lot of times I write another thing saying that I made a mistake. LOL. My friend made fun of me today in school since we wrote a history paper.

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 10:29 pm

Snyder is due 17.25 million over the next 3 years. It is basically the same contract as Luis Castillo + another year. Even if the difference between him and Castillo were financially covered, it still wouldn’t be worth it. He is a health risk and just isn’t that good.

The team I’d expect to get in the mix of all this are the Rays. They’ve shown willingness in swapping Burrell for Bradley. I don’t think the Cubs are interested in Burrell because of his poor defense. He’d have an opportunity to DH with Toronto. I’m not sure how interested they are though.

dcgfan1 November 9, 2009 at 9:02 pm

I don’t mind Overbay at 1B, and O-Hud at 2B, but more importantly they could have the flexibility to package Murph and Pelf for a solid, #2 starter(or #1 guy from a team looking to shed).

reillys5 November 9, 2009 at 9:28 pm

dont give up on pelfrey just yet

Zanderssports November 9, 2009 at 9:08 pm

I like it, but I like Murph and this won’t really be a platoon at all, both are lefties. I love the prospect of Castillo being gone though. Part of me says “try to get someone else”, but the other part says “do it!”

Zanderssports November 9, 2009 at 9:10 pm

by the way, neither Murphy nor Overbay hit over .250 against lefties.

Mets17 November 9, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Thats why one would have to go, a lefty/lefty platoon doesnt work

Zanderssports November 9, 2009 at 10:08 pm

so then why trade for Overbay?

JohantheMan November 9, 2009 at 10:16 pm

to get rid of Castillo I assume and Overbay gives you a trading chip

Zanderssports November 9, 2009 at 10:22 pm

unless Omar is smart enough to do that, which I don’t think he is, Overbay is not a trading chip if he comes to the Mets.

reillys5 November 9, 2009 at 9:28 pm

reyes
hudson
beltran
holliday
wright
frenchy
overbay/murphy
barajas/santos

sign me up right now!!!!!

or instead of hudson, how about felipe lopez?

MetsFan06 November 9, 2009 at 9:44 pm

I agree with everything but the catvhing and felipe lopez. You should have Molina and Olivo in the catching and felipe lopez isn’t that good. He can’t hit.

reillys5 November 9, 2009 at 9:58 pm

it was just an idea because i happen to like lopez… olivo? eh.. doesnt do much for me… plus every time i think about him i think about mike defelice’s face as he charged him from the mets dugout.. with about 15 marlins on his back.. at the end of 2007… molina is old and will cost too much money.. i still like santos and would like to see a platoon with him and barajas

reillys5 November 9, 2009 at 10:00 pm

and lets not get ahead of ourselves… let this trade happen first… this would be an awesome trade for the mets.. not crazy about overbay but would love to dump castillo… even though i respect the guy for bouncing back and taking the error he made against the yankees like a man .. but he needs to go.. time to change things up and upgrade

thedude November 9, 2009 at 10:09 pm

I’d be on board with this (and presumably the hudson follow up) as long as you can get Hudson on a one-year deal.

Remember, this is a guy who lost his job to RONNIE BELLIARD. Hudson just isnt that good.

But Overbay could be a decent option for one year.

I really don’t know why they dont try Murph at second base. Can he be any worse than Castillo/Hudson? He’s showed decent instincts at first and his bat would play at second.

Kendog52282 November 9, 2009 at 10:12 pm

I’d have to think that if this deal goes through the Mets will try and flip Overbay. Murphy is a similar player that has room to grow and makes 6.5MM less, both are lefties.

JohantheMan November 9, 2009 at 10:31 pm

Rumors Rumors Rumors

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Of course. It has been the only thing to live for since the end of 2006 for Mets fans.

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 10:34 pm

The rumors I’d love to hear are about the firing of Minaya, Manuel, Warthen and what ever other crap we’re stuck with.

JohantheMan November 9, 2009 at 10:40 pm

yeah i agree, i need some action, rumors will have to get us by for now

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 10:33 pm

In my opinion, it makes a lot of sense to sign Bengie Molina. It’d give more balance to our line-up knowing the catcher slot isn’t a black hole (or at best a one week hot streak from Omir Santos). I know there is the age thing. Molina is reliable and healthy. He’d be more ideal as a 6 hitter than Francoeur or Murphy (or Overbay).

Flmet86 November 9, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Is Castillo that much of an issue? Is he that bad and makes that much money ? Or is Hudson that good? Mets have bigger problems than trying to replace our second baseman who hit .302 and had 20SB. If Hudson is the reason for trying to dump Castillo then it really is not worth it. If Omar wants to dump a contract trade Perez and sign Lackey.

nyj0126 November 9, 2009 at 11:03 pm

I am suprised more people aren’t talking about Jason Bay. There is a side of me that’d rather see him a Met than Holliday. Everyone thinks it is a given that Bay remains with Boston. This is only if Boston financially satisfies him. Why not go for it? Who care if we make Theo Epstein’s life a living hell. You could make a 4 way hatred between the Mets, Yankees, Phillies and Red Sox for all I care. We need strong healthy players at all positions. I’m becoming less confident in Fernando Martinez by the day. It seems like the Mets are full of bad luck or dysfunction when it comes to our farm system.

mets9268 November 9, 2009 at 11:37 pm

I am def on board with this trade. In fact I would love it. Move Castillo while he has value again and rid of that contract. Bringing in Overbay is a great platoon for Murphy while the develop Davis to take the spot the following year.
It also opens up 2nd base to bring in Hudson or Figgins which is a huge upgrade to the lineup over Castillo.
I also like what I was reading in the last report that it is belived the Mets have more money and will be willing to spend more this year than in past years and will go hard after Lackey and Holliday. There has also been a lot of rumors around Wolf and the Mets as well.

Santana
Lackey
Wolf
Pelfrey
Maine

If that happens hopefully the can dump Ollie on someone.

As for the lineup:

Reyes
Hudson or Figgins
Beltran
Holliday
Wright
Frenchy
Overbay
Santos
Pitcher

I would prefer more at 1st base still but that looks a lot bette than last year.

methead November 9, 2009 at 11:57 pm

yeah…let me see it happen. From the mets perspective, I think its a no brainer. Thats why it wont happen.

Peter November 10, 2009 at 8:55 am

Just keep in mind . . .

We can’t teach and O-Dog new tricks . . .
