Buzz: Holliday and Bay Could Be Too Expensive

Joel Sherman, in a post to his blog for the New York Post, says that the prices for Matt Holliday and Jason Bay could be too high for the Mets.

Instead, Sherman says that the Mets are exploring the idea of ’sprinkling’ power around the field with players such as Jermaine Dye and Bengie Molina.

In 2009, the 35 year old Dye hit .250 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI for the White Sox, while the 35 year old Molina hit .265 with a career high 20 home runs and 80 RBI for the Giants.

Earlier today, Adam Rubin of the Daily News wrote something similar, which you can read here.

…i never like the idea of going after second tier players unless they are complimentary, and i certainly don’t feel comfortable with the Mets chasing aging superstars and hoping they can either catch lightening in a bottle or hoping that a player can sustain a prior level of productivity…

…there really is no way to know what the Mets are going to do, but i have to believe that they are going to be patient and wait the market out as long as they can, and if the price is right, they will strike…this strategy worked in acquiring Francisco Rodriguez and most notably, Johan Santana…i just think it’s too early to believe the Mets aren’t going to be bringing in the premier talent this winter…

For more on this, check out Sherman’s post here.

Are we ever going to get younger? Sprinkle around the field two 35 year olds… Awesome

I think we are definitely going to get Holiday.. All this other talk of cheaper options is BS. The MEts know they gotta bring this guy in.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 3:41 pm

No he used a different picture lol

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Since no one really knows what the Mets’ true intentions are … and speculation is rampant … well it seems the bloggers have nothing better to do than to repeat themselves. Pretty much like Lorenzo.

Look in the mirror…hypocrite

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Lorenzo, I’m only giving back what’s tossed my way.

Takes two to tango.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:08 pm

SNY needs to make a Lorenzo vs. VCarver PTI-style show.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:29 pm

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:38 pm

Google it. I can’t explain everything to you.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:47 pm

i know wht it means and it made no sense.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Nothing seems to make sense for you these days. You should seek professional help.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 9:49 pm

If you say so Marty Noble

VCarver November 11, 2009 at 12:02 am

Seriously dude, you need professional help.

And I have no idea why you’re calling me Noble. Though he is one of the better Mets beat reporters — especially in terms of accuracy — so I guess to someone like you who can’t get their facts straight that is a compliment.

Awesome idea! I love watching players that are past their prime get even older in our outfield!!

I love it when we waste our money. We should sign Castillo, Ollie and Redding to extensions while we’re at it. Better lock ‘em up before someone else gives them more money!!

wnymetsfan November 10, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Nicky Noodles you have to relax. The big name Boras clients do not even sign until the end of December early January. It is a negotiating ploy to act disinterested to help bring the cost down. If the Mets said we want Holliday at any cost Boras would eat them alive and we would be paying him $20 million a year for 10 years.

Nicky Noodles November 10, 2009 at 4:01 pm

I’m aware of the negotiation tatics, as I’m sure Boras is too.

But you can’t discount the fact that we do tend to sign players that are past their prime. Given that statement, why shouldn’t be believe there is some merit to the above post?

I can easily see is trying to sign Dye if Holliday/Bay fall through. Same w/ Molina.

This is going to be a very interesting off season for the Mets, anyway you cut it.

Holliday is too expensive, Lackey is too expensive. But don’t worry we will give Dye 12 million a year and Molina 10 million a year and we will have another 22 million in dead weight to go on top of the 18 million per year of dead weight in castillo and perez giving us a nice 40 million dollar chunk of the payroll spending time on the DL and not producing when active.

thedude November 10, 2009 at 4:04 pm

“Worked” in regards to K-Rod is a relative term.

Tidewater November 10, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Please Matt. Learn to spell lightning. There’s no “I” in “Team” and there’s no “e” in “Lightning.”

ItalPiazza31 November 10, 2009 at 4:44 pm

The question is what is too expensive for the Mets for Holliday? If it’s 7 years $130 million yeah then I give the Mets a break for passing on him. But if it’s 5-6 years and $90-$100 million that’s when I question the Mets for passing on Holliday.

MetsFan06 November 10, 2009 at 6:27 pm

Omar said money isn;t a problem. THe Mets should get both Holliday and Lackey.
