Buzz: Mets and Halladay, Holliday

Ken Davidoff, in a post to his blog for Newsday, says that the Mets will speak with the Blue Jays about a deal for Roy Halladay.

According to Davidoff, the Mets know they are not the favorites.

…i’ve been saying all along that i believe the Mets have the prospects to deal for Halladay, but i wonder if he would waive his no-trade clause to come…they also have to see how the market plays out for Halladay, and i think the Mets will play their hand in this much like they did with the Twins and the Johan Santana deal in that they will wait and hope that the price comes down to the point that they can still retain some of their top prospects in such a deal…

In addition, Davidoff says the Mets will meet with Scott Boras before the end of the General Manager’s meetings tomorrow about Matt Holliday.

…a lot has been said about the Mets feeling that the prices for the premier free agents are too high for them, but as Matt said, it’s only the beginning November, and i’m the Mets have a number in mind and i am sure it is a high one, but the issue right now is probably the contract length, and not so much dollars, but as i said, it’s the beginning of November and i would never expect the Mets to dive head first into this…

…i think some key questions is whether or not the Mets could afford both of these players, and whether or not they would ultimately budge on the length of the contract…however i would be weary of paying either of these players the bulk of the money owed in these contracts after the age of 35…that said, much like the contract for Pedro Martinez, i think they should just deal with the back end of the contract when it comes…

For more on Halladay and Holliday, check out Davidoff’s post here.

Just because the Phillies are pursuing Halliday, doesn’t mean they are a favorite to get him. They already depleted their farm system for Lee, though they kept their best pieces. Still, I can’t see them completely emptying out the farm this winter.

I predict the Phillies don’t get him as they will be reluctant to part with their highest profile farm pieces.

I am not worried about the Phillies at all next year unless, of course, half the Mets team gets injured again which can’t happen two years in a row.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 3:27 pm

So your not worried about the team that won the division three years in a row? And twice past us?

The Mets have a lot of work to do before I could say I’m not worried about the Phillies.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 3:30 pm

No, not worried one bit. Lidge is shot. Hamels, though not shot, is human. And the Mets just went through an unprecedented number of injuries this year.

The Phillies are a good team but they don’t worry me at all for next year.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 3:32 pm

What about 2007 & 2008? We didnt go thru an unprecedented amount of injuries.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 3:35 pm

No, but they also missed out by only a fraction of an inch. The two teams were that close.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 3:36 pm

Yea one team went on to win the World Series and than got there again a year later and the other team continues to get progressively worse cause their GM sucks.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 3:41 pm

The year they won the WS, they were not that much better than the Mets. That’s the point you fail to get. This year, they got to the WS courtesy of massive injuries to the Mets. A freakish thing that likely will not happen again.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 3:48 pm

When they beat us like 12 times in a row the final two months of the season in 2007…they werent better than us? And than when we collapsed again in 2008 and they went on to win the world series they still werent better than us? You are completely dillusional and so biased that you cant even admit when a team is better than yours. I’m a diehard MET fan and H@TE the Phillies but I’ll still admit they are better than us right now.

Listen man I understand you love this team, as do I, but you gotta stop giving the franchise the benefit of the doubt. How old were you in 1986 when the Mets last won the World Series???? I was 2 years old so I dont remember it. All I remember is a few decent seasons in the late 90’s, a division title in 2006, and than 3 straight years of disgust. I gave up giving this team the benefit of the doubt a longgggg time ago because it turns out to be the same story every single season with this team under the Wilpons ownership.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 3:57 pm

Can you even read? LOL, where did I say the Mets were better than the Phillies in 2007 or 2008? Also, in case you missed it, before this year, the Mets have handled the Phillies pretty easily head to head. No problems.

Please don’t misrepresent my opinions as it’s a total waste of time trying to correct you.

I think you proved my point. You’re such a chicken little extreme fan that you have to construct straw man arguments in order be able to vent.

I feel so bad for you Lorenzo. You’re so delusional you have to fictionalize other people’s positions.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 3:59 pm

In 2007 the Phillies beat us 12 times in a row to pass us in the division. How can you say before this year we handled the Phillies pretty well head to head???? In 2008 yes we did but still lost. 2007 no we didnt. Maybe you have the reading problem.

And how old were you in 1986 you didnt answer my question

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:05 pm

How can I say the Mets beat them easily head to head before this year? LOL, read your own reply. You answered it.

I was rooting for the Mets in 1986. So I lived through the times when the they ruled the city and the Yankees were an afterthought. I feel bad for you because you haven’t experienced the good times. You are a frustrated fan with Yankee envy. I hope the Mets win soon for the sake of fans like you.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Maybe now you understand why the majority of the bloggers on this site (Age under 30) are frustrated with the organization – because we NEVER have seen a World Series.

And I dont envy the Yankees (wrong again). I was actually rooting for them to beat the Phillies this year. I live in NYC and its great for the city to have a NY team win. So dont tell me I envy the Yankees. Maybe you do, but I certainly don’t.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Also for the sake of accuracy, the Phillies did not beat the Mets 12 times in a row in 2007. Lorenzo, will your creative fantasies never end?

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:19 pm

I said “like” 12 times. Since your so old I’ll explain what “like” means. .. It is an exaggeration. To be exact it was 8 times old man.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:20 pm

LOL, I’ve always understood the source of frustration for some younger Mets fans. But you go beyond that, Lorenzo. Your views are reactionary, extreme and over-the-top. Not to mention based on so much misinformation which you take as fact.

I am frustrated too — but I believe my views are more rational than yours.

And you know what? I believe Cerrone is just about 30, and his views are reasoned and not at all overly emotional like yours are. So not everyone under 30 is bonkers.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:21 pm

Lorenzo, you said “12 times in a row.” Stop hiding from your own words.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:21 pm

They beat us 12 times overall that year and we beat them 6 times TO BE EXACT old man.. They beat us 8 games in a row at the end of the season which lead to our collapse. Old man

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:24 pm

And you didn’t say “like” before claiming they beat the Mets “12 times in a row.” C’mon. At least be man enough to stand behind your own words.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Cerrone is not under 30 and remembers 1986 a lot better than I do.

And my thoughts are realistic which is why they are negative. It is very hard to find anything positive with this organization since 1986. I dont say lets trade Daniel Murphy for Roy Halladay cause that is unrealistic. I pick apart what is wrong with the team and ownership in my opinion based on what the results dictate. How have the results been?

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Lorenzo … if anyone thinks “old” it’s you. Your panicky whining is indicative of someone who has gone senile.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:26 pm

I know you’re old but are you blind from old age????? See exactly what I wrote…

“When they beat us like 12 times in a row the final two months of the season in 2007…”

That was from the post above..Why dont you scroll up a little bit.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:28 pm

I said Cerrone is just “about” 30. You can look it up. I don’t make up things like you do. I never said he was “under” 30.

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Lorenzo, poor man. You are both senile and blind — and in denial too. Look at your post at 3:59 pm. You say there the Phillies beat the Mets “12 times in a row” and you didn’t say ‘like.” Learn to read your own words.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:31 pm

i give up lol

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:37 pm

When your own words prove your errors, that’s a good strategy.

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 4:42 pm

i gave up cause you’re starting to scare me with your stupidity. Ok Marty Noble

VCarver November 10, 2009 at 4:49 pm

Now now Lorenzo. Grow up and stop calling people names. Again, your own post of 3:59 proves you’re in error. Too bad you’re not man enough to admit it.

JohantheMan November 10, 2009 at 3:35 pm

I am more worried about the Mets just not playing to potential than I am about the Phillies. The phils concern me sure but I want to see the mets play the best they can

JohantheMan November 10, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Who praytell are the front runners then? Is it Boston? Wouldn’t be in the AL east make them less likely to get Halladay?

I can’ t see the phillies getting him, can they afford him?

I think the Mets need to make a big run at him, and blah blah blah don’t trade the farm, I understand that but who knows that Toronto may want and he is out there for somebody

Lorenzo23 November 10, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Mike Francessa has been on the Roy Halladay bandwagon since his show started at 1pm and I completely agree.

I think both you and Mike are right and that the Mets have to make a big splash with Halladay before they address anything else.

JohantheMan November 10, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Agree with this, I would feel so much better if they went and did this relatively soon. That makes everything look so much better

BBmetsfreak36 November 10, 2009 at 3:28 pm

If your going to get a big bat, I think it should be through free agency because the Holliday fit is perfect. The mets don’t have many options at all for left feild and power. First base they can atleast stand Murphy if they get someone like Holliday. His 15-20 hrs are gone if you blow the farm for Adrian Gonzalez.
If the Mets are going to make a big trade, it should be for a premire pitcher like Halladay because you don’t just develop that kind of pitcher out of nowhere. The only untouchable is Ike Davis in the Halladay trade.
Offer John Maine ( you can sign Marquis to replace him later) or Pelfrey to the jays. Along with F-mart or another big prospect. Jon Neise and maybe another B-level prospect.

Agees Catch November 10, 2009 at 4:18 pm

FMart is not a big prospect

The Jays would want Meija and Davis just to say hello.

CraigSwan99 November 10, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Give the Jays their pick of whomever they want for Doc. I want him!

mextache November 10, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Halliday changes everything. Pitching, pitching, pitching…go get him.
