Adam Wainwright told KSLG Radio in St. Louis that Matt Holliday will eventually re-sign with the Cardinals, adding:

“I think he’ll be back… I know Matt, I know his family, and I know he wants to back.  It’s going to take a perfect situation to get him to leave.”

…hat tip to Rotoworld for the link and quote

In a post to his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman explains why he believes the battle for Holliday will come down to the Mets and Cardinals.

Since when was Agam an insider?

He is probably the most reliable source, if you think about it… He knows more about Matt Holliday and his needs than anyone else.

this is true

what is this now? can we please sign him so we can all move on from these posts, it’s going to be a long off-season

also if we can’t get holliday we should just sign bay, he has more power anyway, and he’ll be cheaper but then we need to get Doc, either way I think we need Doc

Does he not know Boras’s perfect situation is the most money possible?

“It’s going to take a perfect situation to get him to leave.””

Like what? Money and years? Shut up, Adam Wainwright. lol.

St. Louis is a great place to play. Its a low stress environment, with a good set of players around him. I can see why he would stay. I think that we should at least drive up the price on the Cards.

mextache November 11, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Exactly. If this is true and he really does want to stay in St. Louis, then overpaying for him to come to Flushing would be a huge mistake.

He won’t get booed coming back to St. Louis after a bad roadtrip…he’d get killed at Citi.

eDaPS November 11, 2009 at 12:12 pm

It’s absolutely possible that Holliday resigns with the Cards. But seriously, you don’t retain Scott Boras as your agent if you’re not looking to make the big bucks. Tell me the last time one of his big time clients signed anywhere but where the most money was….

Never thought Holliday would sign with us anyway…now let’s move on
Reds looking to slice payroll.

Bring on Brandon Phillips. Trade Luis Castillo to the Cubs for RH relief pitcher Angel Guzman and a minor leaguer. Then sign Jermaine Dye and Benji Molina

Looking at Phillip’s #’s, this would be a great fit.
AB HR AVG RBI R SB
584 20 .276 98 78 25

Offense would then become
1.Reyes
2.Phillips
3.Wright
4.Beltran
5.Dye
6.Franceour
7.Murphy
8.Molina
9.Pitcher

I wouldnt mind seeing Phillips come in, he plays a great 2B and has good pop. I wonder what it would take to get him though?

Xavier22 November 11, 2009 at 12:49 pm

I think Phillips and Votto are two guys the Reds want to keep in order to build the team.

Adam may actually be right, but you have to know that Boras is going to be annoyed about him coming forward with this.

It’s very possible that Holliday has told Boras he really wants to remain with the Cards, and in order to make it happen, Boras is going to act like he’s going to the Yanks/Mets/Sox/Angels, just to squeeze a little more money out of the Cards.

Sylow59 November 11, 2009 at 12:48 pm

don’t take this the wrong way but “duh”. After Holliday’s error in the playoffs he was immediately mocked (because of where it hit) but that was it. You need to remember that his family is from NE Oklahoma which is old school Cardinals territory. You are right, he probably wants to stay here and will give the Cards a discount, but not a huge discount – which is why Boras is involved. Basically drive the Cards to their breaking point. Puljols wants him and is waiting to see what the Cards do with Holliday before he signs a lifetime extention. Same thing with Puljols. He is from KC, which isn’t far in the Midwest. married a local woman and has a bunch of kids and businesses. The deal with the fans here is that if Holliday leaves over a few million dollars (not 25M of course) then they really don’t want him.

Xavier22 November 11, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Yeah but the Braves thought they had an edge with Teixeria because he went to Georgia Tech. And the Astros were optimistic about keeping Beltran around because he claimed to like it there.

Holliday has only been with the Cards for 3 months and Bora$ is his agent (like Tex and Beltran). He will go where the money is.

Sylow59 November 11, 2009 at 1:23 pm

Regarding Beltran and the Astros: when was how often does a player flat out say wouldn’t play for a team? It happens, but is somewhat rare and there is usually bad blood.

Regarding the Braves: Tex is from Baltimore. NYC is closer geographically and culturally than is Atlanta. Plus playing college ball is different than family. You may be right, but I’d still be surprised.

Bruce Boisclair November 11, 2009 at 1:25 pm

This is Holliday’s only real shot at a big money contract. You can bet Boras keeps telling him that. I don’t recall a situation when a Boras client has signed for a lower price than what was out there. So, if the Mets really want him, they just have to put up the dough.
