Jason Beck, in a post to his blog for MLB.com, says that free-agent J.J. Putz could be interested in joining the Tigers.

Last winter, the Tigers were involved in trade discussions with the Mariners for Putz before he was traded to the Mets.

Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun says the Mets will keep an eye on Carlos Delgado’s progress in Winter Ball.

Finally, Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Phillies are seriously considering Chone Figgins to replace Pedro Feliz at third base.

Figgins hit .298 with five home runs and 54 RBI with a .395 on base percentage with 101 walks and 42 stolen bases, but struck out 114 times.

Personally I love the idea of Delgado coming back for one more year if he looks good this winter and its a small or incentive based contract. The team loves him, the fans love him and he gives us the power we need at first base. Right now there is nothing special out there in the free agent class to play first base. Unless the Mets are going to make a big move for Gonzalez or Fielder, Delgado just makes sense in gives the protection that Wright and Beltran need in the lineup.

The only problem that I can see if the Mets bring back Delgado isn’t the injury possibility, its the Wilpons thinking they are slick. They will sign him and than tell the Mets fans that they worked really hard this off season to find us that power bat the Mets needed and a first baseman. If they do sign him they better not check off anything on their off season wish list. They still need a big time LF(Holliday, Crawford, etc) and they need pitching, catcher, 2nd base.

    Two thoughts on Delgado…

He’d be the left-handed hitting 2009 version of Alou. He won’t last the season and won’t contribute late when it counts most.

Secondly, I think the Mets need a new voice inside the clubhouse. It’s time to move on. Save the money and the roster spot.

I also like Delgado but he in now too old. We want younger players. We should save that money so we could spend it somewhere else.

I agree, spend it on holliday and lackey. too bad they wont. But if Delgado came back on a heavily incentive laden contract with a low base salary it wouldn’t be the worst thing HOWEVER even with delgado I think theyd still need to add power in LF (holliday) because you can not rely on carlos staying healthy he can only be a bonus.

Just, Omar will should fired if he lied to us about the money. He said, money isn’t a problem which is why we should get both.

        • Sylow59 says:

Why would Omar be fired about misrepresenting the money situation. The Mets aren’t owned by the fans. They are owned by the Wilpons.

If Omar is brutally honest and plays with his cards face up – why is that a good thing?

wow if the phillies get figgins they will be even better it would actually allow rollins to bat lower in the lineup where he could be more of a run producer since his BA been dropping since his 2007 MVP year. Phillies are a first rate organization, they let players go like burrell and feliz and replace them with better ones like ibanez and figgins. we have gaping holes in our lineup and we try to fill them with “second tier free agents”.

  5. Sylow59 says:

Putz should be interested in joining any team at this point.

  6. JohantheMan says:

money isn’t the problem here people again, nothing has happened yet, teams can’t even sign FA’s besides their own yet, can we all relax. Maybe Omar won’t sign Lackey maybe he’ll trade for Halladay (and blah blah blah i don’t think it’s unrealistic and it’s my number 1 wish for the hollidays)

  7. JohantheMan says:

also i think we should try to resign putz especially since he doesn’t mean setting up, and he’s comming off an injury, when he’s on he’s on

    doesn’t mind*
