Who is to say that Joe Mauer doesn't re-up with the Twins and never hits Free Agency? Counting on guys hitting Free Agency down the road is a naive way of going about whether to sign certain guys. You can't control what might happen down the road, you can only control what you can do right now.

The thing you forgot is that Agon will cost us like 6 prospects which we don't want to move now.

As much as I want Halladay but Reillys5 is right. HE is ABSOLUTELY right. He will make this team better but we will have him for 3 extras years that we don't want him. By getting Holliday maybe LAckey, Phillips, Wolf, Molina, Arroyo or Harang, the team will improve a lot.

id give Doc six years, thats right about when santana will be up anyway. the thing with doc is he knows how to pitch, he is a pitcher not a thrower so i think as long as he doesnt get injured he has many good years left. on the other hand, id rather use my pieces to land us adrian gonzalez and sign lackey. id take those 2 over holliday and halladay anyday. holliday cant touch gonzalez offensively and defensively and is older. hallday is better than lackey, but lackey is the perfect 2 pitcher, which is what we need.

I understand the arguments againist Halladay but the guy is good, i'd give him six years, in six years who knows how guys like pelfrey, neise will have turned out? We can easily slot him down in the rotation, yes at the time we clearly will be over paying him, but if getting him for the next four years means overpaying him for the next two, i am all for it. I don't care about the sixth year of the contract at this point and it is especially not going to be the breaking point of the deal

Ideally I'd like to sign Halladay to five years, plus a team option for the sixth year but as I said if he wants the sixth year i would give it to him, he's great and nobody can predict what he will be like at 37 or 38.

Also, isn't now the time to win, 2 more years of Beltran, if he doesn't sign an extension, Johan in his prime, come on, getting Halladay would be a great move i'd be estatic.

so im saying.... as good as he is .. forget about him for now, there are too many holes on this team to fixate on one player .. especially when we can fill most of the holes through free agency

thats what im trying to say ... even with the mets and blue jays agree on a deal, halladay will not OK the trade unless he gets an extension .. this is what happened with santana .. the mets had a window to negotiate with santana and his agent where santana had the upper hand because of the time limit.. the same thing will happen with halladay and he will get the amount of years he wants

sure, any pitcher will want a 6 year contract at his age, but would any team give him that? I doubt it.
