Notes: Beltran in Harlem, Hot Stove & Yearbook on SNY

By Matthew Cerrone on Nov 12, 2009, 8:03 am

Yesterday, Carlos Beltran was in New York being honored by Harlem RBI, a charity he supports that the helps encourage education and baseball for inner-city kids.

Beltran told reporters at the event that he is confident the Mets will work to bring in players who can help the team accomplish their goals.

“The Wilpons are committed,” he explained.  “They want to win.  They are also committed to the fans… I do believe they’re going to do anything they can to put a good team together. I have no doubt.”

To read more about Beltran’s day in Harlem, and his opinion about bringing back Carlos Delgado, check out Steve Popper’s report for the Bergen Record, here.

Tonight, Beltran will be a guest on the season premiere of Mets Hot Stove at 7 pm on SNY.  In addition to Beltran, host Kevin Burkhardt will be joined by Newsday’s David Lennon, WFAN’s Ed Coleman, and SNY’s MLB Insider Jon Heyman.

Following the premiere of Mets Hot Stove, SNY will debut Mets Yearbook, a review of the team’s 1971 season.

i’m actually pretty excited to check these Yearbook shows out… from what i understand, they have a ton of footage from a handful of seasons… but, what i am most interested in is, it’s not just the classic years, the 1986, 1969, etc., they’re random seasons, years i probably never saw and know little about… and so, i look forward to all of this…

This is one of the best days of the year. Today they started the 30 clubs in 30 days show on mlb network, followed by their Hot Stove Show and tonight kicks off Mets Hot Stove on SNY. I love it, what a great day!!!

Just read over at MLB trade rumors.com that Omar Vizquel will not be back with the Rangers this year but is looking to basically do what he did with them again on a different team.
Anyone think Omar could be an option for us as the SS/2B back up? Basically what Cora did last year…only even more coachey?

If Delgado is able to play Winter ball and scouts feel he resembles his pre-injury self, and he is willing to do a 1 year deal at a reasonable price, I am open to the idea.

If Delgado is at pre-injury levels (and this is a big if), the guy has never had a season with an OPS+ under 100. He did have a sub-par 2007, when he hit .258 with 24 HR and an un-Delgado-like .333 OBP (OPS+ was 102 that year), but in every other year he’s been very productive. In 2008 he hit 38 HR despite a terrible first half, and last year he was hitting .298 with a .914 OPS before he went on the DL.

If the price is right, and the health is right, it’s probably your best option to bridge the gap to Ike Davis.

I know people want change for the sake of change, but the 2008 and 2009 Delgado don’t seem like part of the problem to me. I think the problem is really the Castillo/Santos/Church/Schneider type guys (as well as the rotation issues with Perez, Pelfrey and Maine).

Just read Steve Popper’s report from the Bergen Record and all i can say is Beltran is blinded by the snowjob the owners have been feeding everyone about building a winner by spending whatever it takes. As of Delgado, I wouldn’t mind seeing back for 1 more year if he is healthy.

We all agree that Delgado has many IF’s but do we agree that he could contribute to the Mets in 2010?

I for one believe, that IF he is healthy, and IF we is willing to play for the mets (instead of going to the AL as a DH), and IF his contract palys out at the right price (and for 1 year with an option), then I believe he would be great for the Mets.

Sure Murphy’s playing time might suffer, but he would still get his opportunities and plus, maybe then, he could start working at 2B.

I might be naive, but I still believe in a players competitive pride. The mets were so good in 2006-2007, but they lost in such a terrible way, that I have to believe that a guy like Delgado (and all the others who are still on the team) wants to win more than anything else.

If the IF’s fall into place, I think Delgado would be great for the Mets in 2010.

What team have you guys been watching? Beltran: Delgado “takes care of himself”. No truer words have been spoken- perhaps a freudian slip from Beltran.

Delgado left the team before the end of the season to go hang out at home; he was “bored” a couple of seasons ago. He has “taken care” of pocketing $50-60M from the Mets. He was a key factor in the collapses, is way past his prime, is worse at 1B than Piazza and doesn’t care about the team!
