Read: Today’s Buzz from the NL East

by Michael Baron on November 12th, 2009 at 10:08 am

According to Dave O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the Braves will soon announce that Tim Hudson has signed a three-year contract extension with an option for 2013, which overrides the $12 million mutual option for 2010.

Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer believes that the Phillies are looking at Placido Polanco, Mark DeRosa, and Adrian Beltre, in that order, to fill their third base vacancy.

Polanco was with the Phillies between 2002 and 2005 and just finished a four year, $18.4 million deal with the Tigers.

Buzz: Limited Market for Big-Money Players

by Matthew Cerrone on November 12th, 2009 at 9:54 am

Buster Olney of ESPN.com says some GMs left the GM Meetings in Chicago convinced the big-money market for players like Matt Holliday and John Lackey will be ‘very, very limited.’

…the talk around baseball is nearly every team will look to reduce their payroll from where it was last season, including the Yankees… i mentioned this last summer, noting how investors are putting pressure on the Yankees to start trimming their budget… so, without them tipping the scales, and no one team going on a massive spending spree, it’s hard to image a player getting paid like CC Sabathia or Mark Teixeira did just one year ago… and so, i bet there will be a lot more trading, swapping of contracts, etc., than in previous years

Note: Season Ticket Invoices, Decreases and Deposists

by Matthew Cerrone on November 12th, 2009 at 9:16 am

In the last day or so, I have been contacted by a small number of disappointed fans who recently received their invoice for 2010 full-season ticket plans to Citi Field.

In terms of price, in early October, the Mets said, “Every Season Ticket Holder invoice for 2010 will be less than 2009.”

According to a team press, “Season Ticket prices will be reduced by an average of more than 10 percent next season, with several seating areas being adjusted by more than 20 percent.”

The biggest complaint from fans who have contacted me seems to be 1) a less-than-they-anticipated reduction in price, roughly $1 per game, and 2) the team requiring all season-ticket holders to decide if they intend to re-up by December 4, along with a 20 percent deposit.

For what it’s worth, one fan showed me his invoice, which has his tickets dropping roughly two percent, or around $1 per game for the same seat as last season.  He has not yet decide whether to re-up.  But, he pointed out, the team required the same early-December deadline last season with a similar deposit.

The team has been telling people the new prices are consistent with what they said in October, in that the average reduction will be more than 10 percent, i.e., some plans will decrease by less than 10 percent, while some will decrease by more.

Nevertheless, in the New York Post, beat writer Bart Hubbuch tries to portray the team as ‘liars,’ which, technically, is not true.

Notes: Beltran in Harlem, Hot Stove & Yearbook on SNY

by Matthew Cerrone on November 12th, 2009 at 8:03 am

Yesterday, Carlos Beltran was in New York being honored by Harlem RBI, a charity he supports that the helps encourage education and baseball for inner-city kids.

Beltran told reporters at the event that he is confident the Mets will work to bring in players who can help the team accomplish their goals.

“The Wilpons are committed,” he explained.  “They want to win.  They are also committed to the fans… I do believe they’re going to do anything they can to put a good team together. I have no doubt.”

To read more about Beltran’s day in Harlem, and his opinion about bringing back Carlos Delgado, check out Steve Popper’s report for the Bergen Record, here.

Tonight, Beltran will be a guest on the season premiere of Mets Hot Stove at 7 pm on SNY.  In addition to Beltran, host Kevin Burkhardt will be joined by Newsday’s David Lennon, WFAN’s Ed Coleman, and SNY’s MLB Insider Jon Heyman.

Following the premiere of Mets Hot Stove, SNY will debut Mets Yearbook, a review of the team’s 1971 season.

i’m actually pretty excited to check these Yearbook shows out… from what i understand, they have a ton of footage from a handful of seasons… but, what i am most interested in is, it’s not just the classic years, the 1986, 1969, etc., they’re random seasons, years i probably never saw and know little about… and so, i look forward to all of this…
