Random: Abraham on Meetings, Agents and Reds

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe provides a recap of topics discussed during the GM Meetings, ranging from whether or not to add an eighth playoff team to a possible worldwide amateur draft.

… abraham is great… i’m happy to see him up at the Globe, and carrying on the traditional notes column made famous by that newspaper

however, he mentions two other items i found interesting:

1) It’s really comical to see the lengths agents will go to connect their clients to teams like the Red Sox and Yankees.  If you see a name that doesn’t make sense, odds are it’s just an agent planting something.

…it is rare to see a newspaper guy reveal something from behind the scenes like this, and though i think we all assume this sort of thing goes on anyway, it’s interesting to see pete actually put it in print… he also writes:

2) The Reds are going to trade some players who will surprise you.

…i heard from someone in baseball today who believes the Reds are serious about cutting up to $10 million from their payroll, but do not feel it is necessary to bundle one of Aaron Harang or Bronson Arroyo to Brandon Phillips to make it happen… for instance, harang and phillips, in one deal, would ship out roughly $18 million in one shot, plus free up more than $20 million next season… but, there are enough teams looking for pitching that finding a taker for harang or arroyo on their own will not be too difficult, so this person thinks

Brandon Phillips Please!!!!!

We’re talking business if we get this dude.

I will be disspointed if we don’t get him, unlike Adrian Gonzalez their is a very good chance we can get Brandon.

Won’t you be dissaponited if the Mets don’t get into the playoffs next season? I also love Phillips but he isn’t a necessity. We should just focus on signing Holliday and tradeing for Halladay. Then sign Wolf and sign Molina or Barajas. Then try and trade CAstillo and sign Hudson. Boost the bench and bullpen a little and there you go.I’m not saying that my suggestions will definately make the MEts into the playoffs but it is a whole lot better than just getting Phillips and other mediocre pitchers like Arroyo or HArang.

I was just referring to the 2nd base situation. I agree with everything you say. I was just saying being the Reds want to shed some payroll, I hope the Mets are their to oblige.

To have a 2B that hits for power and knocks guys in, MAN it’s just a dream.

When you have guys that hit for power at positions that don’t typically produce power, thats when your lineup can become dangerous for the opposition.

The guys a gold glover to boot, not a solid defensive player, gold glove D.

I agree we need way more then just a 2B, obviusly a rotation would be nice.

As a Mets fan I forgot what its like to have what they call a “rotation.” haha

MetsFan06 November 12, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Yeah. LOL.

Santana
Pelf
Maine
Ollie
Livan

What a “rotation”!

DominicanBoy08 November 12, 2009 at 7:27 pm

lol..I cant believe we broke camp with that rotation, how was that possible?? but most of us were happy with it because we though pelfrey was a real #2. we cant make that mistake again.

I admit I was okay with that rotation – okay, not thrilled, obviously – but I knew we had Niese and potentiall Freddy Garcia (that worked out well) to lean on just in case. This year, we need more options from a much more talented bucket. The thing is, with so many holes to fill, can we really sign two talented pitchers? I believe we will have to get lucky and land Harden, Bedard, or Sheets on an incentive loaded contract.

I agree that any trade for Phillips or Arroyo / Harang should be secondary to signing Matt Holiday. However you keep going on about Halladay, the man is old now (considering what they are likely to ask for him) and will be even older at the end of what will probably be a 7 year contract extention. Frankly he’s just not worth what Toronto was asking for him. If the Mets are going to trade those kind prospects for a player, it had better be for someone that is younger, reasonable priced and is a real difference maker on the field everyday not just once every five days. (I.E. Adrian Gonzales) If Halladay was say 27 then it makes alot more sense to give up the chips for him and sign the extension, but he’s 32 now, 33 at mid-season. He’ll be almost 40 at contracts end! Does that really make sense for the Mets to do given the state of our minor league system. Roy’s a fine pitcher, but he’s just not worth what they are asking for, especially when you figure in what he’s gonna want in terms of contract length.

MetsFan06 November 12, 2009 at 7:54 pm

He isn’t that old. I understand that he is ending his prime but he will still help the most out of all of them. by the way. I would just take Phillips by himself. I don’t know why but I just can’t trust Harang or Arroyo.

JohantheMan November 12, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Seriously, that rotation, it hurts my eyes to look at it, how far we fall from Spring Training last year, hopes were so high

JohantheMan November 12, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Also, what we would have to trade for Phillips?

brye65 November 12, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Arroyo & Phillips for Perez and prospect ? Mets take on 18 million while dumping 12 million of ollie.

Send Castillo & Pelfrey to Dodgers for Billingsley & Pierre.

Trade F-Mart, Thole, Tejada & Niese to Padres for Gonzo

mdfalcha November 12, 2009 at 7:36 pm

That’s essentially a trade of Pelfrey for Billingsley – I’m all for it – but keep dreaming!

I like that Gonzo trade though!

Flmet86 November 12, 2009 at 7:35 pm

It seems like the Mets want Castillo out regardless of the LF and SP situations. It is nice Omar can think about more than one thing at a time. So really when the Mets move Castillo I would rank Phillips,Figgins, and then Hudson. Phillips would be awesome. Still not sold on the Mets ponying up for Holliday. I can see them going with a Veteran for a couple of years maybe Dye or Cameron. Then of course no Lackey. I can see maybe if we are lucky both Wolf and Marquis.

JohantheMan November 12, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Does anybody else feel like punching jon heyman in the face

mdfalcha November 12, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Mets5rocks November 12, 2009 at 7:47 pm

More than u know! I can’t stand the guy! lol

MetsFan06 November 12, 2009 at 7:50 pm

I DO.

JohantheMan November 12, 2009 at 7:54 pm

i love you guys (seriously, nobody compares to mets fans)

MetsFan06 November 12, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Is it just me or does he favor the Red Sox or Phils. He said that the MEts can definatly get Halladay but at the same time other teams can get him. I understand that but he should have said how we could get him and what are the chances. He also said “false” Kevin’s Q about Hooliday and Halladay in 2010. Omar even said he was EXTREMLY interested in Holliday.

mdfalcha November 12, 2009 at 7:38 pm

QUESTION –

Would you rather sign Matt Holliday this year, or Joe Mauer next year?

MetsFan06 November 12, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Realistically or not because Mauer would never happen but we need someone now so we could sign BAy and get Mauer next season.
