Stark: Phillies less Likely to Sign Chone Figgins
By Matthew Cerrone - Nov 12, 2009 4:28 pm

In a post to Rumor Central, at ESPN.com, Jayson Stark explains why the Phillies are more likely to sign a free-agent like Adrian Beltre, Mark DeRosa or Placido Polanco to be their third baseman, than sign free-agent Chone Figgins.

Jon Heyman of SI.com said yesterday he believes the Mets and Phillies will be competing this off season for Figgins, who is also a top priority for the Angels.

Later, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said, ‘The Mets are absolutely in on Figgins,’ according to the words of an involved party.

Last month, Angels reporter Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times said Figgins will likely land a five-year, $50 million deal on the open market.

In 158 games this season for the Angels, Figgins hit .298 with a .395 OBP, 42 extra base hits and 42 stolen bases.

to be honest, from what i can tell, there is little chance he signs a five-year deal… that just seems like a lot in this market… people seem to pay five years for power, not speed… in the end, though he might be asking for $50 million over five years, the buzz in baseball suggests he is likely to be offered deals in the three– to four-year range, worth around $10 million per year

In a poll to MetsBlog.com yesterday, 52 percent of 2,200 voters said Figgins is not worth $10 million per season.

If the Mets can dump Castillo and can’t get Brandon Phillips, I’d love to see Polanco on board.

A great defensive player who would make Pelfrey better just by showing up.

  2. MetsFan06 says:

We don’t need Figgins. He is an extra player just like Pierre but better. We just have to think about NEEDs right now.

    OK…..

I vote for not posting a single damn rumor until teams are even ABLE to sign free agents. This is nuts……Mets like Holliday…..Mets are split on whether they like Holiday. Mets like Lackey……Mets are concerned about Lackey. Mets are split as to whether they want Lackey or Holiday. Mets want neither Lackey or Holiday and instead want Chone Figgins and Randy Wolf and may bring back Delgado on a one year deal.

Granted I could just not read this stuff………but its insane. In the end, everyone will be right about this stuff, because they all write contradictory articles.

  4. PHINANALYST says:

if Figgins would play 2B, then fine … i’d take him over Hudson or Castillo for sure …

in the OF, i’d take him over Pierre …. but just can’t see that at all …

the only way Pierre comes in here, is if Omar already has a trade waiting to spin him off immediately — just to shed Castillo. this one is hard to imagine, but maybe we are a better trading partner than the Dodgers WRT Pierre and thier needs beyond 2B.

  5. 7train says:

Omar better be working on a trade for Brandon Phillips, I swear, why i oughta . . .

Seriously if we get Phillips and fill the LF spot with at minimum an up grade over last year, which isn’t saying much, we will be that much better.

Get Phillips he can bop and play the field.

    I will be PSYCHED!!

Again, we need pitching more than a great 2nd basemen. i would like Hudson just fine. We could only make 1 major trade. Phillips isn’t a major trade. We can trade for Halladay and sign Holliday instead. Don’t get me wrong because I like Phillips but he isn’t a necessity.

  6. BBmetsfreak36 says:

I’d like to see Placido Polanco in a Mets uni next year on a one year deal with an option.
He never stikes outs, is a good situational hitter in that he moves guys into scoring position for the RBI guys if you bat him 2nd. Not to mention he NEVER makes an error at second.

  7. PHINANALYST says:

the good news is that there are more and more options presenting themselves for 2B … but that doesn’t change the original problem — getting rid of Castillo (and that doesn’t have too many options)

get step 1 done, then we can move on to step 2 ….

  8. MetsFan06 says:

Getting rid of CAstillo should be #5 on our list. We still have to sign Holliday, trade for Halladay, sign Wolf and sign Molina or Barajas.

  9. PHINANALYST says:

signings and trades are different ….

its easy to sign players … trading takes more time and effort.

Omar should be working multiple trade possibilities, to include: Halladay, Oswalt, Arroyo …. i don’t like anything the Tigers have to dump / offer.

Those trades have nothing to do with signing Holliday or Bay or even Molina … they slightly effect Lackey, Wolf, and Marquis …

I believe that Holliday will get 6 years ~ 16/17 MIL tops

I believe that Lackey will get 5 years ~ 15/16 MIL tops

Hudson’s bargain contract will push Ps $$$ down a little, home discount or not …

  10. PHINANALYST says:

and step 1 did not infer that it was #1 on our list …. just step one of: a) getting rid of Castillo b) solving our 2B vacancy

    • MetsFan06 says:

But stll we can’t trade so much. I don’t think we can do both Halladay and Phillips and Signing Holliday.

  11. The Eephus says:

Who are the 48 percent that want Figgins?? We do realize that speed goes faster (no pun intended) than power, plus he is not as good of a hitter as many think. I am no BA lover, but didn’t he hit in the .270s or .260s not too long ago? Avoid Figgins, Hudson, and any “speed/defense” 2bman like the plague. They don’t offer much more than Castillo and would represent a publicity stunt for than a constructive move. I can envision it now: Marquis, Hudson, and Pineiro, and then Overbay and a lesser LFer, and Minaya will say in Citi Field this will work and the Mets are back. Hint: If these are the types of moves made, the Mets will drown in their mediocrity.
