Buzz: Pirates will trade catcher Ryan Doumit
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com believes the Pirates will not hesitate to trade C Ryan Doumit, “in the right deal.”
Doumit hit .318 with 15 HR in 116 games during 2008, but hit just .250 with 10 HR in half as many games in 2009.
He has played mostly catcher during his five-year career, but has also spent time at first base and in right field.
According to Rosenthal, “His versatility could appeal to teams that need to add a power bat, but aren’t entirely sure where.”
…if i remember right, the Mets were connected in rumor to doumit at the same trade deadline that delivered Oliver Perez…
…he is interesting, from an offensive point of view… the problem is, he is always injured, missing 70 games last year with a wrist injury, he struggles against left-handed pitching, and he’s very weak on defense, no matter where is playing… it’s a shame, because he’s a switch hitter, he has decent power from both sides of the plate, and he can play first base and the outfield, in addition to being a catcher… he’s appealing… but, i feel the Mets should be looking at players who are more well-rounded and reliable than doumit has proven to be…
The 28–year-old Doumit will earn $3.5 million next season and $5 million in 2011, after which the team holds an option for 2012 and 2013.
