Kevin from Metsopolis wonders what the Mets would to do compete with the Phillies if they were to acquire Roy Halladay.
Joe from Mets Today would like prospect Jenrry Mejia to develop, as he sees “no reason to push him up the ladder”.
Joe D from Mets Merized Online prefers that the Mets John Lackey over Roy Halladay.
Finally, take a look at an in depth look at Josh Thole here.

Since if the Mets trade for Halladay, he would want an extension like 6-7 years. I would only give him a deal that would last him till’ he is 37-38 which will NOT happen. If the Mets don’t agree on an extension, that is a total waste of trading a lot of prospects for a 2 year pitcher. Now for Lackey, it is more realistic. Next year, there will be guys like, Beckett, Lee, Webb amd Halladay on the FA Market. Sign LAckey so you could still get a big name pitcher next year. Also, I think he would be better in the play-offs than Halladay.
I think I would be sick if the phils traded for halladay
I don’t see that happening given it will put a dent in their farm system, they have to be thinking about negotiating a contract with Cliff Lee, and they have the contracts of Howard, Rollins, Utley, Werth and Victorino to worry about. True they probably won’t hold on to the latter two, but the first three are going to cost them.
They already have one of the best starting rotations in the NL. They could easily go out and get a Marquis or a Garland to fill Pedro’s slot instead of trading for Halladay.
If te phils get halladay, i would enounter with something like this as i have posted before,I would try for Sheets, Harden AND Wolf, that way we could keep Ollie in the minors until one of the 2 gets hurt. Sign Holliday and Trade Fmart, Maine, Murphy, Mejia and a low minor leaguer or 2 for Adrian Gonzalez. It gives us an incredible lineup and IF healthy a rotation with 3 possible aces.
Line up:
Reyes
Castillo/Hudson?
Beltran
A. Gonzalez
Holliday
Wright
Frenchy
Santos/ Molina?
Rotation:
Santana
Harden
Sheets
Wolf
Pelfrey
That team looks like a world series team to me.
Im with you there if the mets could sport that team on the field i would be thinking world series
the only problem I see is that i doubt the Mets will spend the money to aquire holliday, sheets, harden, and wolf.
do they have the money to do that? Yes but will they spend the money to do that? i doubt it
that looks like a great plan but i highly doubt it would happen
I agree but it is a little unrealistic
The Phillies have the goods but would never give Halladay the contract that he would want.
You never know what Philly will come up with and that is chance I wouldn’t want to take. I say that you trade prospects for Halladay then also come up with a trade to dismiss Castillo, get Phillips and Arroyo.
Yeah, then sign Holliday or Bay and Molina or Barajas.
guys, I just came back from manhattan and guess who I saw walking on the street? Rick Peterson with his wife and his weird hair-style. I had a brief conversation with him, he still lives in NY. BTW he was wearing a JACKET!…lol
IF the PHILS were to trade for Halladay, then it forces the FO hand to sign Lackey, and probably Sheets along with him … i’d settle for that … and you could still trade with the REDS for Phillips and Arroyo … that would be a pretty formidable rotation as well …
then trade Maine … and Ollie (but you’d have to pay some of his salary)
problem is, that leaves you little $$$$ for anything else, such as LF or C …
Yeah, you can only get one of the C or LF, since you got Sheets.
the challenge with Sheets is that it would probabl be smart to bring him along slowly … and not have him in the rotation to start the year … let him miss the 1st 2 months …
why, there was a post saying that he’d be 100% ready by ST?
You don’t want to push Sheets if you don’t have to.
Sometimes, early in the season, you can get away with skipping a starter. Could limit his innings and early season wear-and-tear with that strategy.
I think if you have a chance to add Roy Halliday and keep him from pitching in philly… It’s a no brainer!!! Ask me if Jenrry Mejia should be traded for the best pitcher in baseball. It’s a no brainer!!!
I would much rather gut my farm system and lock up a big contract with Adrian Gonzalez to play firstbase than Halladay to be in the rotation.
You cant go wrong with halladay but i think it would be better to get a guy like Gonzalez and add another component to the core.
The mets could sign 2 of marquis, wolf, piniero, or harden to hold down the rotation for this year
compete with the Phillies? I am sick of hearing that, really. In 2007 they beat us by ONE game, in 2008 they beat us by THREE games and 2009 was the AAA Mets and is NOT a real representation of the team. With a tweak here and there we will not only compete with the Phillies, we will beat them. Mark my words, 2010 is our year!!! LETS GO METS !!!!!!
