Buzz: Who will Bid on Matt Holliday

by Matthew Cerrone on November 17th, 2009 at 11:54 am

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. told ESPN Radio in St. Louis that if a big-market team goes all-out to sign free-agent OF Matt Holliday, ‘the Cardinals won’t have a chance.’

Original Post, 9:48 am:

Yesterday, Buster Olney of ESPN.com said the Yankees are not interested in signing Holliday.

Today, the Los Angeles Times says the Angels are not interested in Holliday either, pointing out that team’s GM, Tony Reagins, recently said his top priority is to re-sign John Lackey and Chone Figgins.

Meanwhile, last week, during an appearance on the MLB Network today, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said free-agent OF Jason Bay enjoyed his time in Boston, where he would love to return.

In a report for the New York Post last week, Joel Sherman said the Yankees would prefer to give one-year deals to their own free agents, ‘than give another long-term contract to a thirty-something player,’ such as Holliday or Lackey.

…so, perhaps sherman as right when he said the battle for holliday will come down to the Mets and Cardinals…
