Buzz: Padres GM meets with Agent for Adrian Gonzalez

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com says Padres GM Jed Hoyer met with Josh Boggs who represents Adrian Gonzalez on Friday.

According to Crasnick, Boggs said:

“There wasn’t any kind of negotiating or exchanging of numbers or anything like that. I’m sure we’re going to keep the dialogue open, but nothing is imminent at this point. The way we’re looking at it, Adrian is a Padre until something happens . And they’re the ones who are really in control of the situation.”

While Crasnick says that San Diego is under no immediate pressure to deal Gonzalez, he expects the Red Sox, who made an unsuccessful bid to acquire him this past summer, will be in the mix.

…the winter meetings should prove interesting in the Gonzalez saga…he will probably cost too much for San Diego to retain him over the long term, but he is still under their control through 2011 but like Roy Halladay, should they not be able to secure him, it will be harder for them to maximize their return on Gonzalez the longer it goes…i personally don’t think he will get dealt right now, but July is another story…

If the Mets can’t get a power bat in LF, like Holliday or BAy, the MEts have to trade for Agon.

If you could sign Lackey to a reasonable deal (hoping he’s healthy) and trade for Gonzalez then you could really have something.

The team gets younger and upgrades the two biggest needs with big-time talent.

MetsFan06 November 21, 2009 at 10:40 am

Completely agree with that. Then get Ankiel for LF

mextache November 21, 2009 at 10:47 am

With those two major upgrades, Ankiel is a pretty solid alternative for LF. Ankiel, Beltran and Francouer is an athletic outfield.

Reyes
Castillo
Gonzalez
Beltran
Wright
Francouer
Ankiel
Santos/(not Molina)

You could obviously flip-flop Beltran and Wright but that’s a strong lineup with Johan/Lackey as your 1-2 punch. Not bad. Not bad at all.

You listening Omar.

I love it. Make it happen Omar!!!

Fonzie86 November 21, 2009 at 11:20 am

I would almost rather have Pagan in LF

Fonzie86 November 21, 2009 at 11:19 am

hate to burst your bubble, but Ankiel stinks.

MetsFan06 November 21, 2009 at 11:48 am

Who would you want. Not Cameron

Ainkel was never the same after hitting the wall. He has a gun. I haven’t looked at the splits but he may be a good platoon with Francouer. I doubt he’s looking for that though.

If the Padres and Mets can agree to an acceptable package of players, then I would insist on a 72 hour window to negotiate a 3-5 year extension. I would not empty the farm just to let him walk in 2 years.

Most opinions are that Davis is the real deal. I’d rather find Better pitching and a LF. Murphy can handle 1B until Davis is ready. barring injury, I’d say Davis is hopping on a shutttle from Buffalo to NY by June

The Padres would have to get a lot of talent to move him. They can offer arbitration without fear of being stuck with a bad pick, and get two first rounders to beef up the system. I’m not sure I would move him yet. All Star Break in 2011 might be a better time. He puts fannys in seats for a year and a half, and i don’t think his value will decline all that much.

Fonzie86 November 21, 2009 at 11:32 am

Of course A-gon would be a great addition but it is all relative to the amount they Mets need to sacrifice. Literally giving up the farm would not be a wise idea.

If they would consider a deal like this:

Pelfrey (slots into rotation)
Pagan
Ike Davis
Brad Holt
Familia/Kunz

for:
Adrian Gonzalez
Chris Young

Chris Young earns:
10:$6.25M, 11:$8.5M club option. He removes payroll for them as he is current their highest paid player and his FB% is very high which would translate to Citi Field well as he has done well in Petco.

Fonzie86 November 21, 2009 at 12:53 pm

On second thought, mets would probably need to throw in one of Havens/Tejada and another C prospect as well. But still would be worth it IMO.

MetsForLife123 November 21, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Guys, how old is Cameron? 36?

serious, we need to get YOUNGERRRRRRRR not older

we don’t need a another Alou..

its either Bay or Holliday no questions asked…

cased closed.

MetsFan06 November 21, 2009 at 5:20 pm

See, aloeu was different. it seemed whenever he got up at the plate he got a hit or he got hurt.

metskat November 22, 2009 at 7:25 am

of course its hard to argue against agon but the fact is…our best prospect (who is on the cusp) also plays first base…if first base were our only hole that would be one thing…we need…pitching, pitching and more pitching…and…anything we can get without giving up our youngsters is a double win….
