I think the MEts should be competing to get LAckey and Holliday or BAy. This is what I’d do. Sign LAckey. Sign either Holliday or Bay for LF. Sign Molina or Barajas. Trade for Phillips and Arroyo or Harang. Trade CAstillo for bullpen and bench players. Re-sign Cora. Resign Putz or get Biemel. There is no reason why Omar can’t get this as the future Mets. It should happen because it is possible.
Reyes
Phillips
Beltran
Holliday/Bay
Wright
F-Core
Molina/Barajas
Murphy
P
Johan
Lackey
Arroyo/Harang
Pelfrey
Maine/Perez
do you have this on a macro?
what do u mean?
you have the exact same post. Talk about Johnson v Halliday.
If all it would take to get Johnson is FMart and Holt this is like manna from Heaven. He is young, cheap, and very good. Frees up a tremendous amount of salary for the next few years. I’d rather see Mejia go as I trust Holt’s vetting more. If you throw in another AA decent prospect you may be able to get Uggla or Cantu (Cantu preferred as he is versitile) for 1B. If Omar can pull this off we should all line up to thank him personally
If Omar can pull off Johnson for F-Mart and Holt that would be fantastic. I think that it would cost more than them to get Johnson simply cause it would be a same division trade which is hard to do. You mentioned maybe throwing in another AA prospect to get Uggla or Cantu. I think that it would take another AA prospect just to close the deal for Johnson and than have to throw more in for someone like Cantu.
I do like Cantu but at that point I would rather keep the extra prospect and sign someone like Nick Johnson. I know he is injury prone but we would still have Murphy if he gets hurt. Or if we save the extra prospect we might be able to use him and others to get Gonzo. More than likely Gonzo won’t happen if we get Johnson so Nick Johnson or Delgado is more realistic.
As far as the pitching I would love to see something like this:
Santana
Johnson
Pinero/Wolf
Pelfrey
Maine/Ollie
Am I excited about Maine or Ollie…..NO!!! But do I think that they are better than just about every #4 SP in the league and they would be our #5…..YES!!!
Yeah, I think it would cost more too. I’m not a Pinaro fan. I live in St Louis and nobody is talking about him. They’re talking about Marquis more. If they can land Johnson the Beddard and Hardin would make a wicked 1 – 4. You would need to limit Hardin to about 25 games. Beddard’s injury was not as bad as feared and had a good run. Hardin would be #4. You could put my Grandmother as the #5 in that rotation and still win 90 without much offensive upgrades. Get AGon, granted unlikely, and you’re over 100 with Pagan in LF.
Oh well, time to make a more realistic Christmas list for Santa
sigh
Love your plan, but i read somewhere that the Marlins would look to trade Cantu for payroll reasons. I think he would be adequate at first base, and by tying him in with Johnson would be a great blockbuster.
2 birds, 1 stone and leaves a ton of cash for other needs
Exactly, maybe Lackey as a 3 or even Bedard/Sheets/Harden or even Wolf at that point. LF i’m not so sure we’ll get Holliday nor Bay. Does anyone know if F-mart is healed from his injury? I wouldn’t mind giving him one more shot to see if he’s the real deal or not.
metsfan06: stop posting this on every thread regardless of topic. Everyone knows what your plan for the mets is by now and it’s unrealistic anyway. Contribute to the blog instead of cluttering it with mindless jargon.
Aright will stop but how is it unrealistic.
Alright I will*
Josh Johnson would be too perfect but I would imagine it costing a load of talent.
I would take Johnson but I wouldn’t want to trade big prospects to get him. I would rather spend them on a bat.
Is Johnson even availible?
I highly doubt the Marlin would consider moving him at all. It’s purely speculation.
metsfan06: Your plan would add a very large amount to payroll. Because it’s unsure how much the FA’s will sign for, an exact number is not possible, but here is a rough estimate…
Lackey – 15M/per
Holliday – 17M/per
Barajas/Molina – 3M/per (depending on guy)
Cora – 1M
Putz/Beimal – 3M
Phillips earns – 6.75M next year
Arroyo (11M)/ Harang (12.5M)
Total – roughly 58M next year
You may want then to spend like the Yankees but they simply will not do it. I know they said they will spend but I doubt it’s even more than 30M or so, maybe mid 30’s tops. This makes you plan unrealistic. Also you do not mention how they get Phillips as he will not come cheap in terms of prospects.
This is not necessarily my ideal off season or even likely but something that is remotely possible. Also within reason in terms of money:
lets say hypothetically this 3 team trade rumor somehow works out, Castillo out, Millwood to the Mets.
Then 2nd base is open, trade John Maine, Ruben Tejada, Brad Holt, and maybe another C grade prospect. (Its hard to judge how much talent it would take being a fan, but say a package built around what I listed and a bit more to get the deal done.)
Sign Delgado (4M w/incentives?)
Sign Barajas (2M w/incentives?)
Rough estimate with shedding some payroll (Maine, Castillo) is 21M added. This depends how the Castillo, Millwood money is broken down. This leaves room for maybe adding a Matt Holliday if they wanted to break the bank. It does not forfeit the future and allows competing in future and 2010. It may not come close to happening but is feasible money wise.
Thankyou for telling me how it was unrealistic. I think that I was just hoping that Omar would get the message and make a huge move this off-season. Nice post though:)
And what do u think the Mets will do?
I understand you and did not mean to discourage you from posting. I hope he makes a big move as well but I just hope it’s not making a move to make a move, that will hurt the team in the future. It’s tough because with all the needs, they could go in so many directions.
