The Mets need to come out of this offseason with some combination of the following four players – Hallady, Holliday, Lackey, Bay. Period.

True. Mo Lackey and not Halladay will be a total disaster.

Santana
Wolf
Marquis
Pelfrey
Maine/Ollie

Solid?? are you serious? It looks pretty shaky to me. If the mets do not get Lackey or Halladay, there is no way this team will even compete next year.

If they can do something via trades that is more creative than these clearly four known available quantities so be it.

I want to echo the sentiment that the Mets dont need to make a big splash. Their core has 5 All-stars(Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, K-Rod), and solid complimentary players like Francoeur, Pelfrey, Castillo, etc. What they need is to add to the existing nucleus, and shore up the deficiencies, which are C, LF, and SP. If you assume they only $20-$25 to spend, you can sign Garland and Marquis for roughly $16 million, add Zaun for $2 million(unlike the other FA catchers, Zaun can actually draw a walk, and wouldn't interfere with Thole's progress), and Byrd for $4-6 million. That leaves some room for players like Freel, Jennings, etc to receive Minor League contracts with invites to ST.

On Pelfrey (sorry, was referring to the added innings in 2008 or the "Verducci effect"

I'm ok with Delgado if 1) he's healthy and 2) he will except a 1 year contract. Neither of those are certains.

Also, I think Murphy plays a good 1B and can continue to develop. He's also potential trade bait at the deadline, so hiding him behind a slightly better stop-gap 1B isn't the best strategy IMO. I prefer investing in a righty platoon-mate like Nady which eliminates Branyan. Glaus, while righty, hits LHP worse than Murphy.

Francouer is an RBI machine, so I like him at #5 or #6 personally. He also strikes out a lot so dropping him to the bottom of the order negates some of his value and gives the opposing pitcher some relief.

Castillo and Crawford are definitely better than Guillen and Hudson, no question. But we'd also have to empty our farm system to get Crawford and while he could certainly be worth it (nay, definitely worth it) I don't get the impression that the Mets would be willing to make that move. Not to mention the list of teams with better prospects and the desire to bring him on board is long.

If you don't get Holliday or Bay just trade for A-Gon. ... You act like that is such an easy feat. San Diego isn't gonna gift wrap him for us.

Also, this obsession with Orlando Hudson my a majority of our fan base is comical. The guy isn't that great. The last few years he has started out hot and then fizzles out or gets injured. I know Castillo isn;t ideal by any means, but Hudson is no great shakes.

Pelfrey had 200 IP in 2008 and 184 in 2009. Where are these extra innings you speak of?

I like Francouer, but not at #6

Guillion is a zoo

Hudson is not that good. The Dodgers don't want him and replaced him with Belliwrd; who they also apparantly they don't want either (hint????).

Castillo and Crawford are the same salary as Guillon and Hudson and much better.

Get Delgado, Branyon, Glaus (if cheap enough) and you have:

Reyes or Crawford
Crawford or Reyes
Wright
Delgado
Beltran
C
Francouer
P
Castillo

Francouer gets better pitches
Castillo's only true advantage isn't wasted by having the P bunt him over. Bunt Francoisr to 2nd and Castillo infield hits him to 3rd so you have third and a semi-speedy guy on first for the top of the order. With that your pitching would work. I'd prefer Beddard to Wolf as there us a lot more upside. I think you could get Marquis for $7M tops. Maine is an unknown at setup

im in agreement, these moves may not be "big splashes" like matt holiday would be but these are realitively inexpensive and address our needs. I love maine in the setup role, i think he would flourish there. mets should focus on speed and defense all around

I don't think it's THAT depressing. The pitching staff is MUCH improved and the defense is far superior.

Call me naive but the best news I've heard all offseason is that Oliver Perez is attending this intense bootcamp to improve physically and mentally. Pelfrey had a down year last season, but he was also asked to shoulder way more than he was ready for and the added innings just wore him down.

If the Mets can get Wolf and Marquis they have a chance to put out one of the best pitching staffs in the NL. The line-up I suggested isn't as scary as Philadelphia's but it should put up enough runs to keep them in games.

Finally, there's always the trade deadline.
