Hey people need to sell newspapers and big-named rumors sell. This is why the offseason sucks! I don't want to wait 3+ months for pitchers and catchers :(!

1) discussion topic is Cabrera. Not sure where may and might is propigating a rumor. Please be a tad more specific.

2) Detroit's economy is brutal, their other contracts, while brutal, are infinately more diffricult to move.

3) You appear to disike Cabrera because: ?? He will be 27 and has had MVP finishes of 27, 22, 5, 5, 15, 13, and 4. His lack of conditioning produced an OPS of .942 (5th in AL) and a #4 MVP finish last year. He finished 4th in BA, 6th in OBP, and 6th in SLP. Since 2004 his lack of conditioning has made him miss: 2, 4, 4, 5, 2, and 2 games. What is it that I am missing???? Seriously - what about him is so bad???? IS it that he isn't "gritty"??? Please be specific.

4) Davis has shown more thaqn Murphy ever did, yet you seem to value Murphy over Davis.

I wholeheartadly disagree with you.

You cant just say "16+ million per year" and assume things to be equal.

If you are talking about 6 years $16 million per year versus 6 years $21 million per year, that is a significant difference of $5 million each year which translates to additional talent.

Although, I only used $16 million as an example because it was your number. I actually think it will be 6 years $17 million to get Holliday. But $4 million is still significant capital.

Also, I think Holliday is a great hitter and a fierce competitor. All around I think hes more of what this organization needs than Cabrera.

So Sylow, are you single handedly trying to propogate a rumor here?

Cabrera has a very rich contract and given concerns over his conditioning and approach to the game, Im not convinced he would get that contract if he were a free agent today.

This implies that there is a disconnect between his perceived value and actual value. Therefore, it is seemingly possible that the Tigers would be interested in moving his salary.

But would I as the Mets give up Brad Holt, Fernando Martinez and Ike Davis to get Cabrera? Absolutely not. The only way I would ever give up such a rich contract was if I were getting cheap, controllable talent in return.

Personally, I think a deal like Daniel Murphy, Ike Davis and a lower level prospect with some promise like a Jordan Vallespin and Tobi Stoner would be more than enough to get the deal done.

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable taking on $22 million per year for the next 6 years, but I'm also not comfortable in resting my hopes on a AA 1B who has had like 1 year of MiLB experience. Especially one who doesnt have incredible raw power playing 1B. Im concerned that his skills will translate to 20 HRs and 80 RBI for us, and fans will eat him alive.

The Tigers have a bunch of bad contracts they would probably prefer to move, but most of them as so inflated I don't know who would take them on.

I guess that is why they appear to be shopping the players who do have some value. Moving Cabrera gives them the most bang for the buck, or in this case 'buck for the bang' ? ;)

I presume the awful economy in Detroit has a lot to do with everyone's presumption that the Tigers are having a garage sale this winter. Everyone must be available...

Jackson earned $2.2M last year. If there is any truth to the rumor they are trying to move him for salary reasons Cabrera could be had without giving up Davis.

We may be the only trading partner and they may be very desperate to move salary given Detroit's economy.

his option for 2010 vested. But, from Cot's:

2011 option guaranteed at $15M if Ordonez has:
135 starts or 540 PAs in 2010, or
270 starts or 1,080 PAs in 2009-10

I'm not sure how it would work for 2011 if they non-tendered him.

See above. we may be the only real suitors. If that is the case, and the Tigers are in need of jettisoning a big salary then your deal may actually be too rich. Regardless, I think it would be safe to assume we keep Davis.
