The player’s last name will be on the back; these will be the alternate home uniform, second to the all-whites; they are an egg-shell, creame color; and they’re not flannel, they are made of the same breatheable material used for the team’s other jersies.
Update, 11:55 am::

Chris M sent in the following image, which appeared with the team’s e-mail announcement to fans.
…damn, i see the drop shadow, which i feel takes away from the idea of this being a retro item… it’s still pretty cool, though… more importantly, i can’t wait to see what new players will be wearing this next season…
Original Post, 11:25 am:
The Mets have officially announced the addition of a new pinstripe home uniform for next season, saying:
“The design combines new and old elements of Mets uniforms. The Mets created the retro uniform following research and positive responses to the jerseys the 1969 World Champion Mets wore during their 40th anniversary celebration in August… The natural color and pinstripes were staples of the original Mets uniform when the team debuted in 1962. The Mets will also continue to wear their white uniform at home with the black jerseys as an alternate.”
The new jersey will go on sale this Friday at the Mets Team Store at Citi Field, on Mets.com, all Modell’s Sporting Goods stores; and the team Clubhouse stores at the Roosevelt Field Mall and on 42nd Street.

Mr. Met logo swingin the bat on the sleeve would be a neat touch!
Love that guy!
no Mr. Met on the side, but it doesn’t look too bad.
Would be nice. The Red Sox have their red socks logo on the side of their unis. Don’t understand why the Mets won’t do the same with their beloved mascot. Especially on a retro uniform.
Would love to see what this looks like. Its shame they got rid of the current white pinstripe, i like that more than the solid, but if you’re gonna make a retro pinstripe, I guess its only fair they get rid of the current one.
i hope the “new and old elements” doesn’t mean the jersey will have the black dropshadow. that would be one major turd in the punch bowl.
also, if they’re so receptive to fan feedback, don’t they realize 85% of the fanbase (and that may be conservative) HATE the black uniforms.
again, i know this story will get a lot of “who cares what they wear? it’s the players IN the uniforms” comments, but i think that’s really a very ignorant way to look at things. the uniforms are the brand. they’re the most visible aspect of your identity and, to paraphrase jerry seinfeld, is what we the fans are most loyal to. a non-focused look conveys a confusion as far as brand identity. in short, DITCH. THE. BLACK.
I like my black-away jersey, but the one that says “New York.” Also bought it in 2004, so i got a nice Shea 40th anniversary patch. I dont think it should be the main jersey, but I have no problems with it being an alternate.
except it no longer is still in use…last year they used just the ” Mets” black jerseys for home and away.
The jersey-collage at MLB style guide was a pretty cool look into the history.
completely agree on the road black version being the best of the black looks. but since they canned it last year, they might as well do the same with the ‘Mets’ black version. at the very least, get rid of the horrible two tone hat. that’s actually my biggest problem. that stupid black and blue hat. especially when worn with the snow whites at home. it looks like garbage. and it’s officially designated as the official road cap. it’s gross. the grey unis improve 1000% when they’re worn with the blue accessories and hats (like they did for the last game they played in the old yankee stadium) and the snow whites look much much better too. if they insist on keeping the black, they could at least can that garbage two-tone hat. but i’d prefer no black at all.
I think the black drop-shadow is there…its the same Mets logo. just different jersey.

I’m not sure why there is black. Maybe he stands out more. I don’t know. Maybe they can alternate between the blue hats and the black hats. It looks ok with it, but the logo on the arm has no black, so it really doesnt match well.
Where do you get your data? I hear outcries against the black, but I see other that like it. I see plenty of it at Citi Field, and the only real numbers I would trust are the sales figures, and it appears the Mets sell the black jerseys.
it’s not data. i didn’t exactly have time to go out and do a qualitative analysis of every mets fan in the world.
BUT
it doesn’t take more than a google search to come up with a huge population of mets fans whose dislike of the black vary from distain to hatred. and since most fans will buy anything, sales numbers are not a good indicator. i saw a lot of red yankees hats that sold like crazy in 1999 when fred durst was rocking it with limp bizkit. i don’t remember the yankees introducing a red hat based on increased sales though. that’s because some organizations just get it and some don’t. and this one doesn’t.
the Yankees organization doesn’t “get it”. The entire stadium is one big sales pitch.
So the Mets introduced a jersey they wear on the field. Some fans don’t like it, many buy it, but as in everything, money talks. why listen to a couple of vocal bloggers when sales figures suggest that many aren’t concerned with the uniforms?
okay next year, the mets can go ahead and introduce a pink jersey, because, ya know, a lot of girls will buy it. are you hearing yourself?! the mets colors are BLUE and ORANGE. no black. it was the saddest of marketing strategies in the ’90s and almost every organization that did it then has made ammends and take black out of their scheme that didn’t have it (i.e. the royals, reds, a’s), so why are the mets the one hold over. it’s not just a few vocal bloggers. it’s everyone who watched this team BEFORE 1998 and actually remembers what they’re supposed to look like.
Love the black jerseys and the snow whites. The old pinstripes were gar-bage, but these new retro ones are very cool.
I like the look. It will be a nice change seeing the pinstripes on another day besides Sunday afternoon. The only thing I am afraid of is seeing Russell Branyan in one of these uniforms in the media guide. Omar, run away!
Hey Matt, they included a picture in the email they sent out…
http://mlb.mlb.com/nym/images/newsletter/y2009/bn_jersey_225x241.gif
so after all that research they got rid of the jersey the most people liked and replaced it with something different?
Brilliant!
I’m fine with this.
I like Pinstriped Jersey, and yeah, I’d rather get rid of the black one, but its fine. I’d also be fine with ditching the snow white ones.
as for the drop-shadow, that doesn’t bug me. Yeah, it wasn’t in the original, but that is a minor issue.
my favorite uniforms have always been the white pin stripes with the blue hats, but i’m fine with these…i realy like the retro look and i think these will look amazing in citi field. I hope we wear these at home, the grey on the road and leave it at that for the most part….who needs so many different uniform styles
I own a black Piazza Authentic Jersey with the 2004 Shea patch on it. To me the black unis will always remind me of the 99-2000 Mets who I loved as a kid. But even as an owner of the jersey I have grown tired of the black it was a phase alot of teams seemed to have gone through but I think its time to get rid of it. So basically just have these new ones, the all white which theyre keeping, and the greys. Also get rid of the all black hat. Blue hats at home, black/blue on the road is good i think.
Wait, so they basically took the the white pinstripe jersey and changed it to off-white? That’s it?
I’m sure they’ll still be wearing those stupid two-tone black and blue hats with them. Nice job!

Just another ploy to get fans to spend more money…
I’ll say this again, even though I said it up higher and I say it all the time:
Love the snow white unis.
Love the black unis.
Hated the white with blue pinstripes (too “pajama”.)
Love this new retro uni.
Would love the blue BP jersey to be the sunday afternoon jersey… but I’ll take this.
Hate having “New York” not be on the road unis. Prefer grays to blacks on the road.
Truth told, most Mets fans I know that own jerseys, own black or white or gray. Not a lot of pinstripers. I think the team has made the right call here. You still see a lot of fans rockin’ the black jersey. People still like it… even if those people don’t post here.
Bottom line, though… most teams have multiple jerseys, and most teams change them every couple of years. The Mets are not alone in this.
