Note: In Regards to ESPN’s Halladay-Mets Rumor

Seriously, what is going on with the baseball rumor mill?

It’s like the mainstream media is losing its mind.

Today at 1:10 pm, ESPN’s Rumor Central ran the following with the title, ‘Mets Trading for Halladay?”

HalladayRC

The story references Mike Silva’s report for NY Baseball Digest, in which he simply wonders, in text, whether the Mets will be able to trade for Halladay, if the market takes a similar twist to what happened with Johan Santana.

That’s it. That’s all he did. Silva, who can be a solid source of information, isn’t reporting a rumor, he is is wondering out loud, in text, about the market for Halladay.  Yet, it is treated as a Rumor on ESPN, leading dozens of people to e-mail me asking if the Mets are about to acquire Halladay.

In addition, ESPN referenced Jenrry Mejia as Edwin Mejia, who is actually the former agent of Aroldis Chapman, not the Mets top pitching prospect; not to mention their grammar in this post makes my work seem like that of an English Professor. I mean, what is an ‘idea package?”

I LOVE the Hot Stove and the rumor mill, it’s fun, and makes for great conversation… so, ESPN, please, stay on brand. Stop confusing fact, fiction and opinion, and messing up our hopes and expectations. You’re better than this.

no no no
i got so excited to see that
boooo

I like the slant of the article though. If Toronto is indeed willing to accept a reduced package for a team willing to take on Wells’ contract, The Mets might come into play. If they add Halladay and what’s left of Wells, they could then turn their attention (and much depleted budget) to a second tier First Base option and hopefully move Castillo just to cut salary in order to afford an Orlando Hudson or Chone Figgins.
These are improvements…

thornton November 24, 2009 at 3:29 pm

Although, now that I look at it, this would really put the Cubs in a prime position.
Wrigley could cure Wells

MetsFan06 November 24, 2009 at 3:26 pm

I kind of got excited. I just read that Agon rumor of being extremely not tradeable so I think extremely means no. Same for Halladay. I’ll try for Holliday or Bay for LF. 2 of Lackey, Sheets, Harden, Bedard, MArquis or Wolf should be a Met. I also doubt we can trade for Phillips anymore but it would be nice.

mark4212 November 24, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Hopefully that’s what happened with all this Russell Branyon, Nick Johnson, Jermaine Dye talk also…. Somoene was wondering out loud and the Media took it as Fact.

Mets5rocks November 24, 2009 at 3:52 pm

We can only hope!

barrylyons November 24, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Matt I have to take issue with your last line “You’re better than this” with respect to ESPN. Sadly, IMO ESPN is not really better than this. This is what they have become.

Nate W. November 25, 2009 at 9:50 am

I agree!

ESPN has slipped to somewhere between Entertainment Weekly and The Onion in terms of factual information they provide.

And they have no intention of going back the other way.

DominicanBoy08 November 24, 2009 at 3:58 pm

for a second I thought the mets were trading for halladay after seeing the title and “Mets Trading for Halladay?..I’m becoming anxious to see some action.

Bench5urvivor November 24, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Just because it’s a rumor on ESPN doesn’t mean the Mets believe it.

Old Backstop November 24, 2009 at 4:13 pm

Below is an **AWESOME** summary of the concept of Vernon & Halladay in a deal:

http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/7/17/952509/whats-the-value-of-a-vernon-wells

In short: “the Jays would need to include four Roy Halladays along with Vernon Wells and receive nothing in return in order to make it a fair deal.”

hotcorner5 November 24, 2009 at 4:36 pm

ESPN is diluting their brand with all these stupid blogs and ESPN local websites that have, in several cases, simply ripped material off other, better blogs without regard or credit to the original author. ESPN will stop at nothing to keep getting hits on their different stupid websites.

Beltranmynewfavmet November 24, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Matt,

Agreed that the concept of trading for Halladay is a fantasy, and ESPN should not have posted it.

I do take one exception to your post however: “not to mention their grammar in this post makes my work seem like that of an English Professor. I mean, what is an ‘idea package?” ”

Matt, your grammar and general lack of respect for the English language is absolutely atrocious. I understand that blogging is different from journalism, but if you put 30 seconds of proofreading into every post you create, you’d probably garner a whole lot more respect. I hope you never ever criticize anybody else’s grammar again; I guarantee yours is worse.

dwright5_godsend November 24, 2009 at 5:11 pm

Matt Cerrone is not a multi-billion dollar industry, though…like you said, it’s a blog. Not that I’m defending him, but why the need for such harsh criticism concerning grammar?

It’s very simple, people. If you don’t like what’s posted, why come? There are many other news outlets…this is just a blog.

MetsFan06 November 24, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Yeah. No body’s perfect calm down. Your on this web-site because of him.

dwright5_godsend November 24, 2009 at 5:20 pm

Grammar! It’s you’re, not your! LOL jk…

Right, though. I can sift through the grammar mistakes, because they happen to even the best writers (which is why they hire editors)…what I can’t stand is incorrect referencing and/or wrong stats. THAT drives me nuts.

MetsFan06 November 24, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Good one! That just made my day! Same to the stats. If some one said A-rod hit 60 hr’s in 07′ and he really hit 54, it makes him a lot better. My yankee freinds always brag that they have CC who hit 3 hr’s in real life but they always say.” Dead up. I’m serious. The guy has 15 carrer home-runs”. I always say sure he does and I’ll be a billionaire

PedroMANIA November 24, 2009 at 5:32 pm

sounds about right for yankee fans

PedroMANIA November 24, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Yeah it is a blog as the original poster said but it is funny when the person who is critical of grammer is in fact worse with it.

30 seconds to prof-read would be great, 5 seconds would be fine as well. Every time he types “I mean” into a post I stop reading it and move on. That is like typing “ummm” into every post.

MetsFan06 November 24, 2009 at 5:44 pm

alomost like never re-read what I post. I always type things like LAckey or HOlliday with two capitals.

Old Backstop November 24, 2009 at 6:10 pm

It’s fascinating to me that anyone would care as much as you do.

I’m was an English major (with a journalism minor) and can honestly say that Matt’s posts do not offend me.

I do notice the typos and spelling mistakes, but in no way do they get under my skin or minimize the impact of the good information he delivers. Perhaps I am just easier to please.

Nate W. November 25, 2009 at 9:55 am

For me the grammar isn’t bothersome, but at the same time it does seem like something Matt could easily fix but just doesn’t care enough about the blog to do so.

Combine that with the occasional wrong stats, wrong pitching hand, etc… and I can understand how it bothers some and causes a loss or respect.

Beltranmynewfavmet November 24, 2009 at 6:02 pm

@Metsfan06 and Dwright Godsend

Hey, I’m not saying I hate this site. I AM saying, however, that it drives me crazy to constantly see “….” after every sentence, and simple typos all over the place. Cerrone started this site as his livelihood, you’d think he’d want to present himself like a professional. All I’m saying is that if he is going to criticize ESPN for grammar, he better hold himself to the same standard (and he clearly does not).

Old Backstop November 24, 2009 at 6:13 pm

What I am trying to say is that it drives me crazy to constantly see ellipses after every sentence and simple typos all over the place.

Cerrone started this site as his livelihood and one would think that he would want to present himself like a professional.

If he is going to criticize ESPN for poor grammar, he needs to hold himself to the same standard.

mdfalcha November 24, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Well said Old Backstop. Unfortunately, I doubt Beltranmynewfavmet will understand your post.

To Beltranmynewfavmet – this is a blog. Go away and create your own blog if you are so offended by the way Matt writes. Unbelievable.

racemccloud November 25, 2009 at 12:33 am

That was pretty funny, bro.

And not for nothing, but Matt’s grammar and syntax are a far cry better than just about all of his message board posters, and just about every other Mets-themed blog out there.

FelixMillan November 24, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Anyone else catch Matt Holliday being interview by Jody Mac and Rob Dibble on The Show? He sounds like a great, down-to-Earth type, and shows no allegiance to the Cards at all. Though born in Oklahoma, he said that he’s lived all over, so has no mid-west preference. He claims to be looking for the best situation. I don’t know that he downplayed his time with the Cards, but did remind Jody Mac and Dibs that he was only there for two months. I sense no hometown discount on the horizon for the Cards.

MetsFan06 November 24, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Since I doubt Agon will be traded and the Mets aren’t likely to trade for Halladay, I think the Mets WILL get either Bay or Holliday. I think they would both fit nicely with the Mets any way you put it.

Flmet86 November 24, 2009 at 8:24 pm

The idea of a one two punch with Santana and Halladay is very exciting as a Met fan. But looking beyond the next couple years how much sense is it to give up a ton of prospects and a huge 7 year contract for a pitcher who will be over 40 when the contract ends. I just don’t think the Mets take that kind of risk and especially not throwing in Wells. Not sure the Mets can afford both of their contracts. I think it is better to trade prospects for younger talent and not for talent on the down slope.

MetsFan06 November 24, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Toaly agree about Halladay. The only two trades that I would do are for Agon which is extremely not gonna happen and for Phillips which can happen but I doubt it.

JohantheMan November 24, 2009 at 9:52 pm

If you take Wells the price of Halladay drops considerably, the Jays are dying to rid themselves of that contract and it may be somewhat of a bold move but it would get you halladay on the cheap, still have to pay him but it would be worth in imo

MetsFan06 November 24, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Ilike how you put imo at the end because IMO, it isn’t worth having Halladay and giving him an extension when he is older than 40.

Flmet86 November 24, 2009 at 11:26 pm

I would trade prospects for Agon and phillips as well and also Crawford. I guess you could add Josh Johnson to the list but that would not happen.

racemccloud November 25, 2009 at 12:34 am

Not Crawford. Not when he only has a year left. I’d be patient and wait a year until free agency, unless an extension can be worked out prior to the trade. The other three, hell yeah. Don’t see them happening, though. We’ll see.

brye65 November 25, 2009 at 8:16 am

I like Crawford but before i’d trade chips for him. I’d sign Chone Figgins first.

MookieRules November 25, 2009 at 7:42 am

Gotta love the people here who are SO jealous of Matt Cerrone’s ability to turn his love of the Mets into a full-time, paying career that they have to come here and bash his grammar. Your mock outrage is priceless, Beltranmynewfavmet.
