Olney: Padres still Unlikely to trade Gonzalez

In late September, Buster Olney of ESPN.com said the Padres are unlikely to trade 1B Adrian Gonzalez this off season.

In a post to his blog today, for ESPN.com, Olney essentially says the same thing, writing:

“Heard this, again: It is extremely unlikely that the Padres will move Gonzalez in a trade this winter. The bottom line is that nothing is really compelling in exchange for Gonzalez right now, because he is already a star player and he has a low salary.”

…i said this a few weeks ago, which is, basically, there is no rush for San Diego to move him… and, even if there is, there is no reason to signal such a rush to the market place… because, the reality is, at minimum, they get gonzalez again for Opening Day 2010, at a super-affordable price, to play in front of fans who absolutely love him… he is still going to be valuable in July, before the Trade Deadline… the Padres should be patient, and ask for the moon, because there is no reason not to, especially when teams like the Marlins, Rays and every other team, big market or small, can afford to take on his salary

Why should they? barring a mojor injury, his value won’t go down, and he puts fans in seats. Next winter, he will be worth just as much

Technically he wont. Because next winter, the market of teams that could keep him would be significantly smaller.

Its one thing for a team like the Marlins to get him, play him for 1.5 years and trade him at the break for a bunch of talent in return (less than they gave up, but at least they had a chance to compete)….but its another thing for the market to be only big teams who have to trade for him and pay him a huge contract. You will definitely get less in return.

Though, that less may still be more appealing to the Padres because of the revenue and support they will get for keeping AGon for 1 more year.

Its a business, plain and simple. What ever gives you more green is what they will do.

if we get holliday, I think we should consider bringing back delgado for one more year (of course he has to be healthy). I know some mets fans dont want him back, but the guy is really a power hitter who still has a presence at the plate.

beltran
holliday
wright
delgado
francoeur

that 3-7 part of the lineup could be really dangerous.

I agree.
